Very well worth while

Most informative & well presented display. I was overwhelmed and ashamed if my lack of knowledge of what NZ navy has done in the Oacific.
The Christmas Island stories deeply affected me, so basic, so true ' so real.

We arrived at closing timing, but the volunteers there, opened up for us and we had a great hour walking around with our own personal guide. It’s quirky, loads of local stuff a church they moved down the hill. Go and visit it for an hour.

They generally get 20 visitors a day

Pretty boring unless you crazy about anything Devonport

Nice building and location. Limited parking.
Museum is pretty boring in my view, with exhibits all over the place.
I personally would not bother.

A WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE OF NEW ZEALAND LIFE IN EARLIER DAYS
Dec. 2018 • Family
Before you visit, make sure the museum is open. It only seems to open for a few hours at a time. There is no admission cost which is a bonus and there is a beautiful park around the museum. All the staff are volunteers and we were unable to find out how the Museum pays for itself. We were really interested in life in the early days of New Zealand. They seemed to have very little. Afterwards, we walked around Devonport and the houses are gorgeous. It reminded us a little of Paddington in Sydney, but on the water. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Devonport.

Excellent little museum

My idea of what a small museum should be. Informative, organized, easy to walk through, and entertaining. Enjoyed exploring the museum (allow about an hour) and surrounding park. Although admission is free, donations are gladly accepted. Be aware they have limited hours so check before you go.

Fabulous local museum.

The museum at Devonport is only open from 10 to 12 most days but it is well worth a visit to give an impression of life for the early settlers. It was very touching to see the few treasures that they had brought with them, lovingly preserved as a momentous of their origins. The exhibits cover all aspects of life in nineteenth century Devonport and the volunteer staff are very ready to give more information should you need it.

A must museum visit

Highly recommend this wonderful museum. My father was in the NZ Navy for his career and served in WW2 and Korea. The photos, exhibits and information are so interesting and informative. I was immersed for ages and it gave me such an understanding of what life would have been like for him over those years.

Respectful

To tell the history of the navy in a way that is interesting, informative but still respectful of the sacrifice made is quite a challenge. They have succeeded. The story is both comprehensive and concise. Like all good museums, the story is told in full without loosing the audience. Educational and relevant.
