Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Don't be confused: from the Mair Park, it will take about 40 minutes to go up to the top (and not 40 meters as we wrongly thought LOL). Very nice walk throughout the park and great view when you finally make it to the top! Worth the walk and the calories (that you can easily get back when walking back to town!!!)

A relatively easy walk up, and great just before breakfast or after lunch. Set your own pace. Amazing views at the top on a clear day. And when at the bottom, you definitely deserve a nice ice cream or beer in town for your efforts!

You can see for miles, puts the town in perspective. Beautiful views. You can either walk one of the few tracks to the top or park near the top and visit via a few short stairs near the memorial. Great historical information. Good place to sit and eat a sandwich.

Bit of a trek to get up here by car, and if you walk it can be fun from the riverside up a winding track... only for the fit and energetic! Once there the view is outstanding and there is information so you can discover what you are looking at. Worth a visit.

Visited Thursday 1st September. Just a short drive from City Centre up Memorial Drive is the lookout and War Memorial. Plenty of parking and a short walk to the viewing platform. Great views of the whole of Whangarei. Also there are a couple of walking tracks if you are feeling energetic.

Since the new viewing platform was opened, this has been vastly improved and it is now easier to get the views in almost every direction. It still requires a certain level of fitness as access from the car park is via a considerable number of steps. Graphics give the key history and names of places and, on a fine day, the views are amazing. Car parking is quite limited and on a busy day that could be an issue. There are also a number of walking tracks for the ultra fit and are well worth doing also.

Great views, interesting history, a few steps to get up but not hard, the carpark is under repair or renovation so walk to steps a bit longer than some would expect especially if impaired in some way as it's slightly up hill. Worth visiting though

Good parking and quite a few easy steps to get up to the memorial and lookout area.

It is always good to get to a high spot in an area to get an appreciation of the layout of an area. This doesn't disappoint and has the bonus of information boards with the fascinating history of the mountain and the wonderful war memorial there.

There are walks through the bush around the area and you can also walk up to it from the riverside. Although, our visit was by car.

Thoroughly enjoyed the visit. It is a special place.
