Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This was so full of information. You got a free audio guide which helped a lot and so much to see as well as so much history . We had a guided tour of the automobile, carriage, bicycle section. Our guide Jerome was phenomenal such a wealth of information and even though English was not his primary language he did such a wonderful job telling us such free information. I learned so much on his tour . If you can request him definitely so!!

Another Neoclassical castle with clean and simple lines. It has a huge history and was famous due to Luis XIV's infatuation with hunting nearby in the domain's forest of Laigue.

By the way, there are a few ways coming from North West to get to this castle which is in the middle of the beautiful town. I knew the history and I picked up the road through the forest, very old forest but very well marked and nice roads through.

The castle is the host of National Car Museum, a very interesting journey through the history of cars from the medieval chariots and sleds to modern cars. Very educational with vast displays.

While around visit the town and the cathedral, very worth the time spent. Free parking right in front of the castle.

The Palais de Compiegne was a lovely surprise find. If you enjoyed visiting Versailles I am sure you will enjoy this petit chateau. From the stunning grounds to the opulently decorated interior there is plenty to enjoy and discover. The chateau is steeped in history and has been wonderfully restored to reflect its heyday in the Napoleonic era.

We arrived by car and found parking easy (right out the front). The other visitors were mainly French and we were able to move about the rooms and take in the atmosphere easily as there were no crowds.

Unless you're very keen on Napoleonic history, save your money and visit Chantilly instead.
The (free) gardens are well maintained and a great spot for picnics. The tea-room (open in summer, check dates) has a great selection of loose leaf teas and delicious homemade cakes.

Call ahead or check via website which rooms/museums are open - when I visited, about 50% were closed/ off limits because they were setting up an exhibition.
Exhibits aren't well labelled in English. Off limits areas not clearly indicated. Some of the staff in the main museum could do with customer service training.

The palace has a large number of furnished rooms from the First and Second Empire. There is also a good audioguide available. Apart from the Royal Apartments, there is a museum dedicated to the Second Empire, with a large number of portraits & busts. The car museum shows some of the first cars built in France, together with a collection of sledges and coaches.

Having lived in Compiègne for a few months now, this is somewhere I go quite regularly. It is amazing that in this tiny little town, we have such a huge and beautiful palace! If you're staying in Compiègne, do NOT miss out- it's so close to centre ville, and the walks around the garden are fabulous. Not to mention the cute little tearoom which is sometimes open!

I've been to this stunning palace in the city of Compiegne a few times before but today's was my first vusit in a number of years.
It's a wonderful place with sumptuous interiors, beautiful grounds and gardens and the most magnificent facades. Lovely courtyards abound also and don't forget to stop into the National Car museum located in what were once the palaces kitchens.
There's an excellent audio guide and a small souvenir shop at the end.
There are some amazingly furnished drawing rooms, bedrooms, a quaint library and the most magnificent central ballroom/ stateroom.
The gardens are beautifully tended and back into the beguiling Forest if Compiegne.
Absolutely well worth your time if you're in the city, a must-see in my opinion.

We visited on our first day as it was raining and we wanted something inside to do.
We were certainly not disappointed, there were lots of rooms to see full of art, furniture and treasures. We spent a couple of hours here and really enjoyed our visit. We went back to see the gardens, which were free, on another day when the weather was better.
Parking was right in front and free, although you can also park by the river fairly cheaply and it's not far to walk in to the centre ville.

As usual in France everything stops for a 2 hour lunch!

It is great to go round and see all the amazing rooms, but at the entrance you are told to get to the apartments before 11.30 otherwise you will be not allowed in. So as the entrance from where you paid is a ten minute walk away if you get there as we did at 11.15, along with several french couples we were running to get there! At 12.00 as you go round the rooms they shut the doors after you!
So it would have been nice to go round at our leisure, we went round at break neck speed.
The part where we could take our time was the Winterhalter exhibition which we were totally blown away with . We had never heard of him but he did the Victorian Royalty paintings, the hair and the jewellery stood out as though it was real, and the faces were so animated. It was a lovely bonus to our visit. They had also set up a room where you could sit behind a frame ( dress up, with clothes provided) with different scenes at the back and take your photos. Fun for adults and children!

The palace is very ornate with fantastic rooms and furnishings, but the descriptions in each of the rooms were only in French, which we don't understand well. We were provided with a free audio guide tool, but the numbers on the displays did not bring up the correct description on the audio guide, so they were pretty useless.
