About
Mona's on-site winery and one of Tasmania’s oldest vineyards. Small-batch, premium wines made from estate-grown fruit. Drink the range at Mona’s bars and restaurants or hit cellar door for a tasting. Moorilla was founded in 1958, when founder Claudio Alcorso—Italian émigré; patron of the arts; wine enjoyer—planted some of Tassie’s first wine grapes, making Moorilla (and the man himself) a visionary, foundational part of today’s thriving industry. Claudio eventually sold Moorilla to Tasmanian gambler (and Pinot noir fan) David Walsh in 1995. David would carry on Claudio’s attitudes to wine and art, eventually building a brand-new winery, bringing in Canadian winemaker Conor van der Reest to ‘make stupendous wines’, and building the Museum of Old and New Art (Mona) on the Berriedale peninsula Moorilla calls home.

Moorilla Estate is located directly next to MONA and is absolutely worth a visit. There is a winery tour available and Cellar Door for wine tastings. A casual restaurant and the more formal restaurant The Source are also part of the winery but bookings are usually necessary. Allow time to pop in when visiting MONA or make it an extra visit to enjoy all that Moorilla has to offer.

What a setting for a tasting! This was one I really was looking forward to but in the end I left disappointed. The cost was not an issue, it was not catering to individual tastes. All the wines were good but I would rather choose my own five out of the wines opened. Eg we tried a Sauvignon Blanc but not their Riesling, we could not try the cheaper range against the dearer range to see the difference. When you pay for a tasting I think you should have some say.....even if it meant paying more.
The staff though were terrific.....it’s just the formula!

It's not often I dig my heels in but I will never visit Moorilla again. As a born and breed Tasmanian I have visited this place over the years and have always been disappointed but the attitude of staff, quality or lack thereof in food and wine has finally rendered this place a no go zone. As self confessed wine snobs we were offended by the $10 charge fee for tastings. Admittedly this was refundable on wine purchases but wine should stand up for itself. If the winemaker is confident it is good enough for purchase and cellaring they should put their money where their mouth is. A small charge of $5 would be acceptable and deters the serial tasters / non purchasers. If you're tasting to purchase you don't need an excessive amount.
As for the food, it was over priced and over rated. I've been there five or six times over the last 10 years and have always been encouraged back by the promise that "it's improved" only to discover it hasn't. There are better alternatives and I suggest you spend your money at those instead.

We had just visited MONA and wished to sample the Moorilla estate wines. After indicating we wished to first sample the two wines for free we were treated with studied indifference by the staff. It was as if we invisible. We regularly purchase wines from vineyards but walked away empty handed .Their loss as the wines were quite nice.
The vineyard was not unique as we found this attitude in a lot of Tasmanian wineries. The exception was Janz were we were treated with respect and subsequently purchased wine.

After checking out MONA, I wandered up to Moorilla for a wine tasting. The tasting is very reasonably priced for the amount of wines you get to try, and is free if you buy a bottle at the end. There wasn't a single wine I didn't enjoy in the tasting, which is saying something as I prefer bold reds and the majority of those on offer were lighter whites. The bar staff were very friendly and informative, and the view from the bar is beautiful too. It was a great way to spend an hour, and I ended up leaving with a cab sav/franc blend that is by far the most enjoyable wine I've tried in Tasmania so far.

If you are visiting MONA the vineyard estate is just a 3 minute walk from the front entrance What to expect when you get there? Follow your nose to the first level of the glass tower on your right - the tasting room is worth the visit. It provides an opportunity to acquaint your palate with samples of Tasmanian finer cool climate wines and place an order for door to door delivery. With your tastebuds primed and a need for lunch to mop up the alcoholic sampling or another glass of wine, head for the cafe at ground level which backs onto the barrel room seen through a glass partition. If you are in the mood for fine dining and stunning views venture no further than across the landing from the tasting room - is is a venue that will inspire but be prepared to blow your budget.

Being fro SA Australia, we are spoilt for choice and have done lots of wine tasting over the years. When got there we realised they were very busy and they did squeeze us in, but we did pay for the privlege. It cost $10 for the tasting which came off the price if you bought some wine. Granted the wine was nice, but we found the tasting very rushed as they tried to serve too many people at one time.
