Worth a visit from Khiva!
May 2019
If you have an extra half-day, it's worth a trip from Khiva to see this ancient fortress. It's mind-boggling to imagine how people could construct and live in such a fortress in the middle of a desert. It's fun to climb to the top and walk among the many crumbling rooms and steps.

Must see

Ancient Fortress in the desert, off the beaten track, beautiful place. We book a driver from Khiva through Responsible Travel LLC to take us there (at three old fortresses). It was one of the best parts of our travel in Uzbekistan.

Desert fortress
Aug. 2018 • Couples
This fortress is located in the desert north west of Urgench. Visitable in a day along with some of the other forts of the area from Khiva. Not much remains of the fort but lots of mud walls. You get a good impression of how large and important this site was. Worth the visit out.

another impressing fortress
Oct. 2018 • Friends
this is another mighty fortress in the territory of ancient Khorezm kingdom, very well designed to protect the important route of the silk road.
views from top are amazing, BUT PAY ATTENTION WHILE CLIMBING !!

Three fortressess near Khiva / Urgench
Sep. 2018 • Couples
Well worth a visit if you have 5-7 hours free in Khiva. You may find a driver who after visit of Ayaz Kala, Toprak Kala and Kyzyl Kala will take you to the Urgench airport for the evening flight to Tashkent or Bukhara. There are drivers just outside the Northern Gate of Khiva - I paid 35 USD for two passengers in quite a good private car.
Nice landscapes, semi-desert area; take a lot of water, wear good shoes, put something to protect your head and skin.. From car parks you will have to walk a bit to the top of the hills, but no serious difficulty.
I recommend also another short trip - 2 hours for 5 USD.. There is a nice mausoleum (41.3379588,60.549986) of Sheikh Mukhtar-Vali 25 km east of Khiva in Yangiariq and going back to Khiva - 19th century Chodra Khovli palace of former Khivan khans.

The "Golden Ring of Ancient Khorezm", definitely worth a visit
May 2018 • Friends
The desert fortresses of ancient Khorezm lie mostly in Karakalpakstan and the area's traditional name gives a stark indication of what lies beneath the desert sands. To explore the fortresses properly you will need a bit of time, as there is quite some distance between them. If you are able to climb and walk in a relaxed state of mind, taking a deep breath once you reach the top, you'll be rewarded with an impressive view of the scale of the sites, that have been very wealthy places with sophisticated inhabitants. You'll be able to spot an imposing figure on the horizon long before you reach it.
Specifically, the Toprak Kala was both a city fortress and an important religious center, and the citadel at its heart was a royal residence: archaeologists have identified a throne room, a fine temple and an armory .

After visiting Ayaz Kala, it’s normal to feel that you dont like this place much as you just encountered the greatness of Ayaz Kala! Entrance fee is required also here for 4,000 som. Go to Janpik Kala also if you have a chance. It is 1 hour away from this place.

A sizable remains of ancient fortress
Jun. 2018 • Couples
Quite a lot of walls still remain. This is in stark contrast to the magnificent buildings of ancient Uzbekistan and to beautiful intricately decorated Madrassas and mausoleums. But perhaps that is why this place is interesting. Whether it is worth subjecting yourself to pain and suffering whilst traveling on the bad road from Khiva is debatable.

If you are a fan of fantasy video games, Indiana Jones, Lord of the Rings, then this is the place for you. For complete info on all the 8 fortresses in this area please read my other review of the Ayaz Kala, which also applies to this place.

ancient fort
May 2017 • Couples
Still lots of traces of walls and mud bricks that allow a vision of where rooms and streets used to be. Amazing to think of how old this is. A magnificent view from the top. High above the desert floor but not to difficult to climb the sloping entrance way that leads to the fort itself. Take water
