What a great experience. So much history here. We loved the self guided tour, and will be traveling back to Maitland to do the torch light tour. Be sure to allow a full 2 hours to complete the self guided tour, this way you are not rushed, and it will allow you to take photos and take in the surroundings... More

History comes alive when you can be transported to the place and times it happened. The stories of convicts, their crimes, their treatment (sometime cruel and unusual), their escapes and executions, and ultimately the end of an era provide a riveting tale!

We've been to the gaol on several occasions and it is a very sobering experience. The self guided tour was good and easy to use. A couple more language options would be useful. Need at least an hour and a half to comfortably get around. I recommend it.

I first visited Maitland Gaol within a few months of its decommissioning and opening to the public. At the time I felt as if the residents had just stepped out for a couple of hours, leaving me free to wander around in their absence. There were still mattresses, pillows, magazines/photos - various odds and ends left behind when the gaol... More

My son and I had the most wonderful tour of the Maitland Gaol. The gentleman that was our guide gave us a wonderful insight of what life was like being in this institution (by all accounts he had spent some time in the Maitland Gaol as an inmate). We had the best couple of hours going back in history. A... More

We took the self guided audio tour of this historic goal which has a history spanning 150 years. As the goal was still in use less than 20 years ago, the buildings are in good condition. Personal accounts by former guards and inmates are a bonus. That's where the positives end. The buildings are poorly labelled and it is very... More

Audio tour was an excellent way to learn about the history of Maitland Gaol. Such an excellent piece of history that is well maintained. Lovely to see different events hosted here to make use of the structure.

We joined a regular guided tour at 11am on Saturday. We had our 13 and 19 year old sons with us and drove down from Pokolbin where we were staying. Robyn our guide did a great job of bringing the history to life. Turned out we were on the Escaped Tour and while there were many entertaining stories of escapes... More
