- Raja N15 contributionsHardwork that is worth every bead of sweat.Mt Manganui is one of our favorite places. Beautiful beaches, great ambience , nice food spots makes it a real holiday spot. A drive to Papamoa is worthwhile as well. The latest work done around the beach makes it very beautiful place. The walk up to the summit is worthwhile. If one is fit, can walk the steep path with mostly stairs on right side , beach side. Otherwise, walk up from left side is better. There is other option around the base. Either way, the walk gives a great pleasure.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 28 December 2023
- Paolo1005Montreal, Canada660 contributionsGreat viewsBeautiful walk to the top about 45 minutes climb. If you want a more challenging climb, we went up the back of the track Steeper longer and definitely more challenging. But in the end, we end up on top with awesome views. Or you can just go around at the bottom all along the coast also very beautiful and all free!!Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 January 2024
- Natalie DSalt Lake City, Utah12 contributionsHighly recommend the hike!We hiked to the top with our kids ages 8 and 11. We took the shorter route and made it up quickly. It’s a beautiful hike with great views on your way up and on top. I also did the walk around the bottom, which was also lovely. I highly recommend both!Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten 9 February 2024
- What We Found TravellingSydney, Australia6,691 contributionsViews Views ViewsYou don’t actually climb up this mountain but there are lots of steep walking sections so make sure your foot ware is good. Lovely views on the way up. Magnificent views from the top. Sensational views on the way down. It will take about 2 hours to do the return hike to the summit including stopping for photos. You’ll see plenty of sheep & birds.Visited March 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 15 March 2024
- tammyBaltimore_MdBaltimore, Maryland3,844 contributionsGreat exercise straight up for sure! Two different ways up this mountain, I choose the straight up the hill method going up, which took me close to 45 minutes with stopping several times to take a break or sit down on tons of benches. Definitely nice views from the top of the ocean below. Much easier going on mostly steps, still a good 30 minutes. If you're in good shape I highly recommend but on the flip side if you have trouble walking this won't be easy!Visited March 2024Travelled soloWritten 6 April 2024
- MalcolmYealmpton, United Kingdom273 contributionsTough for us, but glad we did it!This was a tough walk up for us(reasonably fit 60+), but the young couple (mid 20s) thought it a breeze. We went up the steep track to the top and the views along the way and at the top were amazing! Well worth the sweat to get up there, and I did sweat!Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 June 2024

Fantastic experience walking up a beautiful volcano in a beautiful seaside town. The summit track was tough on the children but they managed it in around 1hr 20mins. The view from the top was definitely worth the effort!

It's been 12 years since I last climbed Mauao and I swear it is even more beautiful now! Appropriate walking shoes and clothing is a must, as you can get hot walking up 200 odd metres above sea level. The condition of the track is ok, although you must be aware of where you step as the terrain is elevated. Take you time coming down too, as the elevation and gravelly conditions of the path can make it awkward, unless you are experienced. The views from all around the tracks are fantastic as they gradually change from ground level to the absolute peak. We saw some youngsters game enough to perch themselves on boulder on the side of the mountain with a steep drop to the bottom (not advised to do). The signposting on the tracks are accurate. We briefly talked to a person carrying a 20kg pack using the route for training (he was climbing twice today and three times tomorrow) in preparation for the Milford Track. We saw people of all ages, shapes and sizes on the walk. A great walking experience.

Reaching the top is an extraordinary feeling that will take you between 20 mins to 1 hour depending on your level of fitness and the route you take. I am an averagely fit young adult and it takes me half an hour.
Good shoes aren't essential but they are helpful.
There are no facilities or water at the top so be prepared.

A great walk fairly doable until about 1/2 the way up then it becomes time for breath breaks! Take the path up and the steps back. (Our B & B hosts let us know this.) Harder to walk up steps than down. So true! I'm 72 and had no problem. It is a bit of an effort but worth it. I couldn't believe how many much younger and older than I am almost skipping up this Mount!
We sat and watched a couple of parasailers take off and float beautifully down to the beach. A wonderful way to spend the morning hours in spring.

Its a challenging track because we tagged along our 4 year old daughter and we stopped almost every corner. (Hahaha)
The trail is very easy to use. Steps could be steep and slippery when wet. The summit view offers breathtaking view of Tauranga harbour, Beaches and the city. That >1 hour walk is worth it.

A memorable experience walking up the the step track towards the mount, having the sunrise point visible throughout the walk. A track that a reasonably fit person could easily manage. Walked two consecutive days with the second day to view the the beautiful sunrise. Captured those lovely memories that will flash on my inward eye any time I wish to recall the moments. Awesome views with awesome companions.

Hard work but worth the trip. Our guide Naomi Glover was so knowledgeable and knew so much about the flora and fauna and Maori culture. I’ve a dicky knee and I was struggling on way down and she helped me for part of the way. View is spectacular- we’re both 70 so it is a feat to do it. Just take your time and have plenty of rest breaks. nfglover76@gmail.com

Walking the base or climbing to the summit is a must do at the mount be prepared. The terrain is uneven and the steps are quiet steep so make sure that you wear appropriate closed shoes. One part of the track up is literally 200+ steps to the top all of different sizes above sea level so take your time and be prepared to sweat! There are seats are different stages of the steps for those that need the rest but the views going up looking over the mount and the satisfaction of reaching the top / the views from the top are definitely worth it. On the way down the other side is uneven elevated slope so be careful of slipping. You can enter the base track and do the summit walk from either side of the mount - from the beach side next to the surf club or from the pilot bay / top 10 park. Recommend doing it early in the morning when its not so hot.

Mount manganui is the famous attraction in tauranga. Anyone can take a walk or a run to the summit or do the base track. A walk to summit might take 30 to 60 mins depending on your fitness level. Best time is to walk is during summer as the whether is amazing. This is very famous spot for the locals and tourists. The scenes from the summit and on the way are mind blowing. Best to take water with you. Tracks and steps are already in place to help the people. The view of the sea, city and harbour are simply wonderful. Best if you can start the walk before 7a.m or after 5.00 pm to get rid of the heat. Good track to have your fitness levels.

Wow! The views were spectacular at the top of the track. Although the hike up was quite challenging and we had to stop several times to break it was so worth it. We are some what in shape I would add and still found it very challenging as it is quite steep. Loved seeing the sheep so close up as well. Don't miss this. I wish we had more time to spend in Mt Maunganui The beach was gorgeous.

Dear trekkers, can one easily park RV on the trailhead? Do we need parking permit? If so, where can we get the permit?
Written 29 May 2019
Yes parking is limited and you would have to take a chance that something is available close by. If you do have to park further away the walk along the beach to the mount track is a nice appetizer. If you intend staying longer than a few hours it may be best to book a camp site
Written 4 September 2019
Can you park your car close by
Written 17 February 2019
You can try. But there is no allocated parking for the track itself. However, walking around Mt Maunganui is just beautiful, so even if you have to park 5 or ten minutes away you will still enjoy yourself.
Written 19 February 2019
Is there a store/place nearby where we can store our luggage before we do the walk? (like a luggage locker) we arrive before our check-in time.. would like to do the walk prior checking in, so need somewhere to leave our bags :-) HELP

There is a campground and a lot of shops - i am sure if you ask them, that they will do this for you

Hey I am 6 months pregnant, fitness level average. Has any pregnant mothers done the Mount maunganui climb before?
Written 1 January 2019
I am much larger and much less fit than most pregnant people and I made it. There are plenty of benches to rest on if you need to catch your breath and you can spend the time enjoying the view.
Written 9 January 2019
We are in our 60’s and find it takes us about 3/4 hour or so. There are some undulations. Plenty of benches to stop along the way. Is very scenic.
However, due to a slippage there is now a diversion - up/down some deep steps. These may pose a problem for you. They are not far from the start of the walk (nearest to hotpools or to the left as you view the water). You could start that end and make a judgement as to whether to continue or to walk back and enjoy the shoreline.
Written 14 August 2018
How long does it take for a fit person of 30 y - male from start to the summit and back?
Written 10 April 2018
You could go up and down in an hour and a half perhaps? Maybe quicker if not too hot and you are fit.
Written 10 April 2018
The one to the left is shorter but harder with a lot of stairs, the path to the right is a lot longer with not as many stairs but slopes. It just depends how you find walks :)

There are a several tracks up to the summit of Mount Maunganui.
But which one is the easiest track to the top?
(e.g. Waikorire track, Motu Kauri track and/or Oruahine track).
Written 29 January 2017
Oruahine is the easiest as it has less steps and a few more flat areas.

Isit safe to hike alone? This is my first visit to tauranga
Written 13 August 2016
The Mount is so popular you are unlikely to ever be alone up there. Yes it is safe. The track is filled with runners, walkers, locals & tourists from dawn to dusk. Enjoy
