In February, when my children were on Midterm break, my family made a trip to Abeokuta my home town. We visited the Adire shops and bought nice Adire dresses, Olumo rock and fantastic eateries. My children had a great time and learnt so much about Olumo rock from the Your Guides.

Finally visited this famous Rock with Family and was really impressed. It was interesting to learn so much about how it came to be. We had a guide who led us up the Rock and told us the background and history behind it. There were some challenging places whilst climbing up but it was worth it when we got to the top where we could see the whole of Abeokuta and the views were fantastic. Lovely photos captured there as well. Highly Recommended!

I was shown around the ancient rock by a tour guide-a sight to behold! Was told so many unforgettable stories about its origin, our forefathers, the origin of certain names attached to it and Abeokuta and so many other things! It's a place I would want to visit over and over!

Not for the faint hearted
Visitors should make sure window are fully sealed as the road leading to Olomo is very dusty road from major road work look like dust storm. Once the roadwork is completed it will be a beautiful place to visit once again.
Lift makes it accessible
I will definitely visit again

Have you be considering a visit to a tourist centre that isn't like your tush, executive looking resort? Somewhere you can bond with family, few friends, adventurous and careful too? OK, this is one of it.

I was unfortunate to plan my trip on a day it rained, so, expectedly my review will reflect some of the difficulties I suffered as a result of the weather, take them to hearth.

Pricing:
It's cheap, really cheap. For ₦700 ($1.93), you'd get access to the historical rock.

I saw a building that looked like a lounge at the foot of the rock, but I was either too pissed off because of the rain or put off by the loud music and a classroom of students who were strolling in and out of the building. Sorry, that's all I know.

My experience

** I can't recall how many steps we had to climb, about 130 or so, but I sure would have preferred to use the elevator at some point, sadly we couldn't use it due to power cut. Better to take the steps than get trapped in an elevator, right?

More so, be sure to check with your doctor before embarking on this. It will really stretch you if you're not fit enough for it.

** I came in a sneaker, but the sole couldn't get enough grip on the rocks. Be sure to wear something that won't slide on a tile, the rock is slippery (again, remember it rained the day I visited).

*** If you go late, just before twilight, it's fun. But lighting around the rocks isn't so great, if you mind, you won't enjoy it. Ah! There are cool spots (as you climb) to bond with bae or boo, you never can tell who needs a quick massage 😁.

** The tour guide is excellent. I speak the native language of the town (Yoruba), so I particularly requested that he communicated in his mother tongue, he obliged and did great.
He's got a good command of English, but I doubt his ability to explain some of those myths and how Abeokuta came to be, the deity on the rock, culture and all of that using the best words. Hopefully they have other tour guides who can. Prepare for the uncertain.

** Looking at the city from the top of the rock didn't wow me, honestl. Way too many brown roofs and thatchy buildings...haha...but if you love arts, you'll still get a great picture.

Oh! The top of the rock is the best place to see the first church in Nigeria, that looked beautiful.

** There's a confluence in Abeokuta too and you'll get to see it from the top of the rock.

** One last thing, the tour guide will make you navigate the rock, it means you'll crawl through some crazy stuff (I'll attach a picture). It's dangerous, but don't miss it. That's the only opportunity to have fun, believe me.

I believe that's about it. Have fun!

This is both a cultural and natural wonder. Please ask about the history of the town that got it's name from the rock. This site is a marvel and is sacred to the people.

I loved my visit here it's so rich in culture. A few things to note. Despite paying the N1000 for entry per adult, you pay extra N200 for parking and then there are tour guides on site who you pay as well. I do advise going with the tour guides as they have wonderful stories to tell during your tour. But I give it 4 stars because all the hidden costs are unnecessary and should be accounted for in the entry fee.

My son and I set out to climb Olumo Rock yesterday. The first hustling attempt was at the entrance. We were told that the ppl staying in the car (and not climbing) would need to pay a site seeing visit even though you can't see much from the car. Our driver went back and forth with the hustler and then asked to see the tariff in writing. The guy said ok but came back empty handed because supposedly the "tariff is no longer in effect". I wanted to pay for a guide but was told we could do that closer to the start of the entrance for the climb. When we got there we were told the price was 5k NGN instead of the 400 posted at the front. He said the price is higher if it's not booked at the main entrance. I said ok and turned to walk back to get it, then the started to lower the price and finally asked how much I wanted to pay. With all the extreme poverty in Nigeria, it always amazes me that employed people are the main ones doing the hustling.

Anyway, the climb was tricky but fun. It had just rained so we had to be extra careful. The guide does help you physically navigate the rock. It was a good workout and we enjoyed hearing of the history.
