- eVe 🇸🇬🇸🇬🇸🇬Singapore, Singapore1,451 contributionsNice view at the end of the cave tunnelTo visit the 3 caves including bamboo rafting, you would need to hire a local community guide. This would cost B600 as of writing this review. Cave 1 is known as Column Cave, Cave 2 is Doll Cave and Cave 3 is Coffin Cave. The guide would point out the various shapes of the stalactites and stalagmites as we trekked inside the caves. Cave 3 is a steep upclimb to see a pre historic coffin. Thereafter, we board a bamboo raft to sail down the caves. We saw big fishes and bats along the way. Our guide suggested we hiked back to the visitors centre. It was a easy walk of 15 minutes.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 December 2023
- Stephen NHong Kong, China353 contributionsWorth to pay for a visitWhen you visit this cave, you have to employed a guide with you and he/she will lead you to the cave entrance and rode a bamboo boat into the cave. The cave was huge and there're a lot of bats inside the cave. Inside the cave, it's not really much to see but the view of cave entry was really stunning.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 December 2023
- Jeep1,434 contributionsGreat underground adventure. This activity needs a local guide and a lantern, since there is no electricity inside the cave. After paying a fee (600 bath per group with maximum of 3 persons), your guide will lead you to the entrance of the cave where he/she will light the lantern. Don't forget to buy some fish feed as there are thousands of fish to feed during this activity (we also fed many fish at the entrance of the cave while we were waiting for our guide lighting the lantern). This interesting cave called "Tham Nam Lot", where the Nam Lang creek runs from the cave mouth to the other side of the mountain, resulting in beautiful formations of stalagmites and stalactites. The cave is about 1 km long and consists of three huge rooms. The walking tour begins with "Tham Sao Hin Luang", a large cave full of beautiful stalactites and stalagmites. The most prominent feature is a few large limestone pillars of up to 20 metres. Next, trek into "Tham Tukkata", the most expansive and longest in all 3 rooms, is lined with small stalagmites, shaped like dolls of different sizes. Then, have a ride on a bamboo raft (and feeding fish) to "Tham Phi Man", the last room that contains stone tools, ancient utensils, prehistoric wooden coffins, human bones dating back over 2000 years (this room is full of bat droppings and stairs are quite steep, be careful). Such an amazing activity. Highly recommended!Visited January 2023Travelled with familyWritten 23 December 2023
- Jörg FischerBerlin, Germany513 contributionsSomthing you should absolutely doDas sollte man sich unbedingt anschauen. Hier begeht man die 3 Höhlen noch mit einem echten Grubenlicht. Die Höhlen sind wunderschön. Das besondere Highlight ist die Höhlefahrt mit einem Bambusflos. You should definitely check this out. Here you can walk through the three caves with a real miner's light. The caves are beautiful. The special highlight is the cave trip with a bamboo raft.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 December 2023
- Susan K25 contributionsFantasticSo glad we decided to go here from Pai. You pay 300 baht each for the one and half hour ride to the caves. It is then 600 baht for 3 people. This gets you a guide with a lamp, gets you into all three caves. The last cave you get to by going on the bamboo raft thru a vast cave full of bats. Such an amazing sight. Would not be good idea if you are not good on your feet, as it can be slippery in the caves and there are lots of steep wooden steps, which help you gain entrance to the caves.Visited December 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 27 December 2023
- Hoody MToronto, Canada143 contributionsnot to be missedWhat a fantastic place !!! If you are in the area do not miss the tour of these caves (Yes there are 3 caves) Get the local guide (Who always has a lantern with them), so you can see where you are going and the amazing stalactites @ stalagmites. Even better if you bring your own lantern or a good flashlight.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 March 2024
- Belle B6 contributionsCool!!The caves are pretty cool!! I’d recommend going in a three as it’s only 200 baht each and you need 3 people for the bamboo rafting. The caves are amazing but the tour guides don’t give you much info on the actual caves, they just take u round. I would say worth a visit tho.Visited April 2024Travelled soloWritten 3 April 2024
- LET GO LEASH • Alecia273 contributionsFelt like you were riding down the river Styx.I have gone spelunking in many different caves all over the world, and this one was very special. It had an energy about it that was unlike any other. You enter the mouth of the cave and thousands of bats are active and flying around the mouth of the cave over the water. There are also thousands of black fish swimming about in the very clear water. There were 4 of us that went, so we had 2 tour guides. They each had a kerosene gas lantern that let off heat and sound and was the only other thing besides the bats you could hear in the cave. We went into 3 different parts of the cave, including an old burial site where you see calcified bones and an old wooden coffin. The best part of the tour was taking a small narrow bamboo raft on the river through the cave. Only 4 people total (the person "rowing", the guide, and 2 guests) can fit on each narrow boat, and you sit in silence as you slowly ride between the bats above and the fish below. It was a spiritually chilling experience. So magical! This cave and nature park is a little less than 1 hour from Pai. I would suggest going as early as possible in the morning. Have a quick breakfast beforehand and make sure you bring water. You'll be back in town for a late lunch in the early afternoon.Visited March 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 4 June 2024
- PankhiBengaluru, India15 contributionsRide the raft with the cat fishVisiting Lod Cave in Mae Hong Son, Thailand, was a memorable experience. It is vast and 3 caves are inter connected. Full of deposits of stalactites and stalagmites, and is divided into three main sections: Big Column Cave, Doll Cave, and Coffin Cave. The highlight was the bamboo raft ride along the Nam Lang River inside the cave, sweet locals ride the raft giving a serene view of the cave's interior and its bat population. Not to forget the millions of cat fish like fishes in the lake. The Coffin Cave, with its ancient teakwood coffins and swamp ground was a beauty. Carefull of touching any hand rails- its full of bat poop. Overall, Lod Cave is a must-see for its unique blend of natural beauty and history, making it a killer destination in northern Thailand.Visited March 2024Travelled soloWritten 10 June 2024

This was our first proper Thai show cave. Within walking distance of Cave Lodge the cave swallows the river running past Cave Lodge and disgorges it 800 m away at a lower entrance. It is possible to kayak through the cave in the rainy season and in the dry season visitors are ferried through part of the cave on bamboo rafts. The cave is full of huge dry stalactite formations and thousands of swifts roost near the lower entrance where very ancient wooden coffins can be seen in high level passages. There are several very steep flights of stairs to negotiate to see all the cave. One can exit at the lower entrance or return through the cave. The guides carry powerful Tilley lamps and are nearly all women. Prices are reasonable and you can buy food to feed the large carp like fish that live near the cave entrances. A visit to Tham Lod is a must if you are in the area. There are a number of other 'wild' caves in the area that can be visited.

We visited using a one-day pass for numerous attractions in the Pia district. The pass was 200 THB per adult and then some attractions charged extra for a guide and parking. We paid 210 THB for two adults to enter the cave with a guide on a bamboo raft, this included parking for a car (I think it was 50 THB for the car). You can purchase the pass at any of the attractions and do them in any order within one day.

The caves are about 1.25 hours away from Pai a bit of a stretch on a motorcycle in my humble opinion. In typical Thai fashion foreigners pay 500 baht whereas Thai get away with 300 baths. The money pays for a guide and a raft tour. Each guide only gets one ride per day - how much out of the fee that goes to her, I don’t know. I tipped 100 baht. The caves as such are very nice. The raft tour incredible. This place is worth a visit.

It is quite a distance from Pai towards the cave, but the drive is adventurous and quite a lot of fun with your own bike. There are also some view points on your way to the cave and you are most likely to drive around 1 hour.
There is also an entrance fee (August 2023: 1 cave = 300 Baht, 2 caves = 500 and 3 caves = 600 for a group of three people).
Unfortunately, we arrived during a time only cave #1 had opened. However, that cave was huge with a lot of bats and was a unique experience for those, who have not been in a cave just yet.
Yes, it kind of smelled and a lot of poo from the bats laid on the ground / way. That’s nature, though. Guides are friendly and wait for you in-case you want to make some pictures.
It has been a fun day for us and I would recommend driving to the cafes few miles further at “Ban Jabo”, I guess - for a nice view and soup / coffee.

Is lod cave suitable for toddlers?
Written 19 December 2023
No unless you want to carry them through the caves system and there are a lot of stairs. If you get away from your guides light you are in total darkness.I wouldnt do it myself.Might get a bit too scary for them too

There are bus or minivan from Pai to Soppong?i dont find nothing

The Prempracha buses go many times a day. I think 150 bt one way. If you want to go to the caves and return the same day, many tour companies offer this.

Hello,
We are hoping to ride there on scooters ourselves. Just wanted to check if the road is very steep or if it is suitable to ride there?
Thanks

It is suitable to ride there, yes. The road is wide and in good condition. You do go up and down a big mountain on the way so there are bends, but they were fine. Enjoy!

We are a family of four, 3 adults and one kid (under 12). What's the costs for this trip with guide? Do we need to take the raft? And what's the costs for this too?
Will this excursion require a lot of walking?
Thanks!
Written 31 July 2016
If you have your own transport then you can easily drive there and hire a guide for 150 Baht for up to 3 people (not per person). Depending on exactly how old your child is you may need 2 guides or they may allow just one. Bamboo rafts are extra and you can either pay to go one way and walk back or have a return journey. I think it's about 300 Baht per person for a return.
To get to the cave entrance from the car park you'll need to walk through the gardens and a bit of forest on good paths for about half a mile at most. It's about a 20 minute walk from the exit of the cave back to the car park if you took a bamboo raft one way.
You can organise a tour from Pai for about 400 baht per person, there is public transport you can use but it involves motorbike taxis to get to the cave so it's a good adventure but won't really save you a lot of money.
There is a shop and restaurant on site to pick up refreshments or Cave Lodge is nearby and they do really good Farang (Foreigner) or Thai food.
Hope this helps.
