One of the most beautiful open air art spaces I have ever seen. You can walk for hours and discover new galleries and art pieces which are spread across a huge park. Some art pieces are of excellent quality.
Please be aware that English is not spoken so you better learn some basic words in Portuguese.
For my one of the highlights, definitely worth the detour. Yes it is a bit far and not so easy to reach, it if you are an art lover you will be happy to take this burden as the site is stunning.

I was there 7 years ago and went back this year. Only one new installation. All the artwork has been there for at least a decade. The installations look dirty, dusty. The park looks abandoned, the pools and lakes are murky. The pieces of art are extremely far from each other. You just can't visit all of them (they are not that many, they are just spread out) by foot. They park could easily have a couple of cute trolleys running around to take people to the attractions. It's definitely not worth walking for miles to visit the galleries.

Include this in your "must visit before I die" wishlist. The place is gorgeous; gardening and landscaping is trully fantastic. The gallery are interesting. You will like some, dislike others, and be confused by some. You would have to visit for at least 2 days to have a good idea of the place, which is enormous. Try private internal transportation if walking a lot is not an option for you.

Going to Brazil intersted in art, really? ok this is the place. Two days to see the various parts of the exhibition. An extraordinary experience that combines Nature art and the people looking at art i.e. you.

When visiting for the weekend in July 2010 I was completely amazed by the whole place. Not only they gather one of the most impressive contemporary art collections in Latin America, but they also offer a huge open air space, where the galleries are spread out, amongst the unbelievable gardens projected by renowned landscaper Burle Marx. Gallerie's buildings are also a great example of Brazilian modern architecture. You also find a great restaurant and several cafes. Try to skip the weekends, when it can get a bit packed, but if it's not possible, try to visit it all at once on a Saturday or maybe leave the further galleries to Sunday - the Sunday crowd doesn't usually go too far out.

I have to admit that I'm pretty sad that the experience wasn't as, it seems so many people...

First of all, the lack of communication at the entrance is a bit limited. They should explain that if you want to take the little cars to go at the end of the museum (practical when you don't have much time like us (we stayed three hours)) you have to buy the right band/ticket entrance... this is just an example... This is the place that we wanted to go the most as it's where the best expositions are. But we have been turned down from the place, that isn't actually next to the entrance... You can find all the details here: http://www.inhotim.org.br/index.php/p/v/209-653

Have a look at the website, it's very complete... Shame we didn't went on there beforehand.

We've noticed that some of the labeling were also just useless... Imagine a label next to a tree saying : Tree... it was about the same for some exhibitions.

And then, the content... Where we found some very nice, gorgeous and clever pieces, we also found some ridiculous one (and I'll stop there to avoid to be sued by the creators)
In our team we had an art teacher, and I swear at some point I heard her saying: "what's the point?" (that I thought for 70% of what we saw)...
Some of the ideas we understood, admired and studied for a while. However, there's is a -what I call- "pain room" where you see pictures of dead people who had accidents and that was just vile. Curiosity aside, it's just plain gross and shocking. What is the creator idea I presume, but then I wouldn't recommend to anyone to enter the room as it's really strong and after two third of the visit (of the room) we just made a quick exit... it was just too much to take in... and the structure was a bit horrible with the cardboard and tape...

The things that you HAVE to see:

Galeria Adriana Varejao (inspired from the Portuguese blue tiles)
Galeria Mata (this is the best one of all !!!, try lifting the floor and create something with it... or lose yourself in the paterns)
Desvio para o vermelho I: Impregnação, II: Entorno, III: Desvio (the red room that we couldn't see, sadly)
Means of a Sudden Intuitive Realization (fiberglass igloo with water fountain and strobe light... weird, but nice)
Forty Part Motet (you'll never imagine surround sound in any other way)

Inhotim was recommended to me by a friend who said, "You have to go here-even if you're not that into the art. It's amazing and beautiful." So I went and I am so happy I did. The landscaping in this oasis that you arrive at after driving along dirty, dusty roads and seeing lots of rundown homes and businesses. Inhotim is diamond in the rough. Stay for the entire day, eat lunch there, walk, lounge, bask in the beauty of it all. There is something there for everyone.

This wonderful place totally deserves five stars. The grounds are just beautiful, with one lovely view followed by another, of the modern art, and nature’s own artwork, especially the lakes and palms.

If you want to wander around, admiring the plants, landscapes and views AND visit all the art galleries scattered throughout, you will definitely need two days. There’s so much to see, plus great cafes, restaurants and the design shop. I’m not a great fan of conceptual art, but some of the works were simply breathtaking. I’m not sure what they all meant, but I really appreciated the chance to experience them. I wish I could see them all again. I especially recommend the Tunga gallery, and don’t miss the glass exhibit upstairs.

You can take little golf-style buggies round the gardens, for an extra 30 rais for the day. If you’re over 60, take some form of identification, with your dob, as this allows you entry half price. This applies to a lot of Brazilian tourist sites, so well worth doing.

Anyway, this place is well, awesome. Do go.

It's a must-go place for a vacation trip to Brazil! We spent 1.5 days there and felt not long enough. The art works melt with visitors in the beautiful garden and created lots of fun, every one's experience would be unique! Very enjoyable! We ate in a couple of food courts. The meals were fresh cooked and tasted good!
