Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

To start, the lake and surrounding jungle is BEAUTIFUL. Seeing the monkeys on the islands is very cool, but the boat tour is a rip off. Most of the destinations the boat takes you too require extra payment and felt super touristy (mud mask, ecological center that's more like a zoo)…Definitely over priced for the experience.

Be sure to come around and get the view from the south side so you can get the full glory of mini-volcanoes left over from the last big eruption. It is worth the time to read the geologic history of the region. Fascinating!

This is the second time we visit Catemaco. You can take a tour around the lake and find the monkey island, some alligators and the best place called Nanciyaga national park where you can stay and live a great experience in the nature, there are temazcales (kind of hot springs),get mud masques, even as you drink spring water, you can swim there! I recommend this place a lot. There are also shamans who practice divination and healing and some rituals take place there. I suggest to travel with a group and don´t miss the snail cocktail.

I went back to Catemaco recently and enjoyed a boat tour of the lake. It was awesome! It cost approximate $11 (200 pesos), and it was worth every penny. I especially enjoyed the monkeys, but everything about the experience was wonderful.

Catemaco is features in one of my books ("Love Waits" by Judah Knight), and I can't think of a more enchanting place in the region. This lake is so beautiful and memorable. I was disappointed that the weather prevented me from taking the boat tour.

The lake is beautiful and we very much enjoyed the 2 hour cruise arranged for us by our hotel, with one exception. The Monkey islands. Two of the islands on the lake have resident monkeys. Two species are represented, neither of which is native to the area and only one of those is even native to Mexico. Despite signs that said do not throw fruit our guide was feeding the most horribly obese animals I have ever seen bananas. He told us that the scientists were wrong, they were not fat from the fruit but from chips tourists fed them. We were a party of 12, paid 900 pesos and had the boat to ourselves. The boat did make 2 stops where we had buying opportunities. Once for facials and once for tour through an eco-resort. We declined both. We did see a large group of parrots flying above the eco-resort, but our guide told us that they had been imported also and were not native to the area.

I consider this the "Great Lake of Veracruz" and a must see if you ever visiting the Veracruz region of Mexico. There are couple of ways you can plan to see the lake: 1) take a day trip from Veracruz city using ADO bus transit ( cost $10 person and takes 4 hours to arrive= 8 hours of travel) or 2) make it a romantic or family getaway for the weekend or holiday ( there are many hotels in Catemaco avg cost $40/night based on double occupancy. I found the boat excursion on the lake in Catemaco, a great way to spend your morning and you could do it everyday if it is your desire, even fishing trips are offered. It takes about 3-4 hours to see everything on the lake. There are many lake tour vendors offering boat rides in Catemaco, so there is no problem getting a far price. It normally cost $20 per person and you will see all the wild life that inhabits the lake. The inhabitants include different species of monkeys and birds. The water is so calm and the trip is great for photography. The lake is the best feature in the town of Catemaco and has walkway that stretches about a mile that includes: restaurants souvenir shops, and cafes. Besides the Basilica, this is the only highlight if visiting Catemaco for tourism. Happy Travels!!!
