Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Saw this gem on a programme on RTE TV, called No Place Like Home. So, on our way from Fanad to Donegal Town we made a slight detour to visit this church. The weather was pretty horrendous as we traversed the route from Fanad to the church. But, as we drove down the hill from the main roadway the mist cleared significantly. What a beautiful place. The clearing mist made it all the more atmospheric. There is a beautiful vista the the front of the entrance way. It would be a fabulous place for a wedding ceremony.
In answer to a question asked below, I wouldn't suggest the grounds for a picnic as it is a church ground after all. But, the area around would be a great spot for a picnic. But, remember not to leave any trace after you have left.

Do not miss this if you love architecture and off the beaten path attractions. When we went, we had the place to ourselves. It was quiet and had a sacred feeling to it. You could just imagine what it was like to go to service there in its heyday. It is definitely off the beaten path. You might think you have taken a wrong right turn but keep going. You will be pleasantly surprised.

We stopped here after visiting Glenveagh National Park. This abandoned church sets down in the Poisoned Glen. We had the whole church pretty much to ourselves and got some great pictures. Well worth the stop.

You pass this church on the way to the Poison Glen walk. It is worth it to stop and have a little walk around. The views of the church with Mount Errigal in the background are stunning.

This old church has a sad history - it's on the plaque by the entrance, and others had written about it before. You can see this from the main road that bypasses Dunlewey, and it can be reached by driving down a narrow road. The building itself is quite imposing, although to best appreciate its location, you should also stop at one of the viewing points back up on the main road and look down on it.

Nestled in a valley, between the Poison Glen, Dunlewey Lough and Mt. Errigal, Dunlewey Church Abandoned (as it's also known) is icing on the cake in a setting filled with great beauty. While there's not much left of the interior, the white marble exterior has a sort of Gothic look to it that makes for great photos.
The church is very easy to find. We approached the site from the northeast via Moneybeg (stopping first at Sacred Heart Church), driving along Dunlewey Lough. If you're coming from that direction there's a road off to the right that goes through a small residential area...this road goes straight to the church. There is a small car park right in the front and a gate. You can walk around the entire sight in about 20 minutes or so.
When you're finished at the site, head back to the main road, turn right and you'll pass three different viewpoints that look down into the valley. The last one is the largest and the view is wonderful.

Dunlewey Church of Ireland was built by Mrs. Jane Smith Russell as a memorial to her husband, Mr. James Russell, landlord of Dunlewey Estate. A very interesting building, it would have been spectacular when first built. It was consecrated in September 1853. As the Dunlewey Estate declined the church fell into disrepair. A definite " must see " if you're in the area.
