A 17th century fort built by Crimean Tatar slaves.
There is very little information available in English so it is good to do some research before.
The architecture is not so interesting as other Galician castles. Inside the Dutch style fort is a 'grand palace' and a Chinese palace. Both palaces currently operate as museums and art galleries, which are accessible with the admission ticket.
Initially built as a residence for nobility, during the 19th century the castle was used as a hospital and barracks, and into the 20th century it was used as a prison.

Went there today on one of the "3 Zamky / Castles" organized bus tours from Lviv. The tours begin at 10:00 and end at 17:00 - 18:00, leaving from the Rynok Square in Lviv. and also include the Olesko Castle (first), Pidhirtsi (second) and Zolochiv (with a modest restaurant dinner there around 15:00 for 35 UAH extra). At least in summer they take place every day except Monday.

The tour prices vary according to where you buy them; I bought my ticket at the Historical Museum on the Rynok Square for 175 UAH, having read brochures about them from the miniature tourist pavillon on the Svobody Square advertising the price as 150 UAH (in Ukranian; it might have been a good idea just to show those brochures there, English wasn´t really spoken either). But it is better to buy them at the small tourist agency in the courtyard passage next to the Rynok Square No.28; this is also where they will collect and register your ticket before departure, and the price will then only be 140 UAH.

I was lucky that the tour included a very informative French-speaking guide; they seem to launch several buses every day, I noticed another one following the same route, but there is no guarantee that you will get an English-speaking guide for that price.

The Zolochiv Castle is slowly undergoing restoration work; until 1995 it was still practically a ruin with a dark past, as stated in the review below. Therefore the exhibits of art treasures are modest, and I found those of Olesko more interesting. Likewise, Pidhirtsi has a more impressive setting. But overall the tour was varied and well worth the time spent. The renovation at Zolochiv was very discreet and didn´t influence the overall visual setting.

Only at Zolochiv there was a restaurant, at Olesko a few souvenir stands etc., in Pidhirtsi hardly anything, the interior also being closed for the foreseable future due to comprehensive restoration works.

The road trip was a times quite picturesque, but the Zolochiv-Lviv road was so bad that I would not recommend driving there on your own when it is dark.

Combining the three castles by public transport on the same day would be very hard, and going to Zolochiv only is less interesting than the combination. Another option could be to rent a bicycle in Lviv and take it on the train forth and back, but it would require a lot of effort as well, and renting bicycles isn´t cheaper actually.

This was the last stop on our three castle tour of Olesko, Pidhirski and Zolochiv from Lviv and unfortunately by the time we got there it was closed so we couldn't go in the castle but could see it from over the fence. The castle has pink and mauve colours and there is a smaller building built in a Oriental style. Apparently there are quite a few exhibits and displays at this castle. Our guide told us that during the Stalin era it became a jail for political prisioners, many whom perished here. There was a small hill that we were told was a mass grave and a memorial chapel outside of the castle walls. There is a restaurant on site but the food was passable, you are better off to wait till you get back to Lviv to dine in one of the great restaurants in the city.

The castle was intriquing enough that it is a good excuse to have to come back to check out what we missed.

This castle is on the tourist trail as one of the three castles close to Lviv. Unfortunately it was raining heavily when we visited Zolochiv so we were not able to see everything. Construction started in 1634 as a residence for a Polish noble family and over the years it has served many other functions. It is now still being restored and it is a museum with a varied collection of items relating to the area and its history and a collection of paintings as it is also a member of the Lviv Art Gallery. Several rooms have been restored to what they may have looked like during the 17 and 18th Centuries.
At one end is the Chinese Garden although there was never any Chinese connection with the castle back in the 17thC when it was built.

Castle has undergone restoration. Not so interesting, but if you pass by it is worth to take a break here, probably the only attraction in the town

There are several museums inside. But for each museum you need to pay separately. It is very strange, but in Ukraine it's normal.

The castle was very interesting. They have done a lot of work to restore it after WWII. You can walk the walls and the garden is beautiful. There is a restaurant and an cafe. Great place to visit.

We enjoyed this place a great deal and I'd highly recommend a visit. The place is dripping with history and they're is a good display of art and other artifacts. The Chinese Palace is great with a fabulous display of Chinese art. We visited as part of a day tour from L'viv that included Olesko and Pidhirtsi Castles and I'd recommend that as being the best way to do it. The tour was in Ukrainian but you can hire an English speaking guide.
