We joined in Porchester Carnival on Saturday. The marching bands produced a steady beat and we all arrived in the castle grounds. Bands, floats, numerous food outlets, a fun Fair with huge roundabouts, swings. Slides on bouncy castles, and plenty of beer tents! A great...More

Portchester Castle just oozes history, starting its life as a Roman fort in the 3rd century. The audio guide is valuable in explaining the Castle's history. Make sure you make the effort to climb the stairs to get an amazing rooftop view of the surrounding...More

Visited during half term for family day out. The fort walls are complete and impressive, encompassing a large grassy park area which is free to enter and was quite busy with families enjoying the sunshine and having picnics. Also inside the walls is a Saxon...More

The grounds around the castle and within the castle are brilliant for a walk on a sunny day. However we found that touring the castle itself was a bit underwhelming for the entry price

Not the place to spend the day sightseeing, but the time to visit the ruined castle and walk to the Church and around the huge enclosed area is worthwhile and if you bring a picnic then there is plenty of space to enjoy. Ladies at...More

A must visit to,the area. Wonderful to walk around the Castle and then through. English Heritage site, the Keep is well worth a visit albeit very high at the top, with low walls. Very well maintained.

This is basically a Roman walled area in which there was a medieval castle built in one corner. The cost to visit the castle was a little high for what it was so we only walked through the grounds and around the walls.

Run by English Heritage, it's not cheap to attend, but the staff are enthusiastic, friendly and helpful. The place is good for details - would recommend the electronic narration tool that they give you. Just consider it's been there for over 800 years, and still...More
