Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

One of the splendours of Central Senegal in a region named after the city of Touba is The Great Mosque of Touba. It's the largest of its kind in West Africa, evident from its towering minarets, mausoleums dotted around its perimeter and double front facing courtyards. Locals in and out have a constant busyiness in their step but adopt a polite stance when engaged. The city is merged with the small town of Mbacke. It is known by all as the place to do all the things one shouldn't when entering the religious heart of Senegal.
There are few hotels anywhere and is not a place geared towards tourism. As a result coming here makes a visit here not only a little confusing but rewarding and most memorable.
The mosque can be reached by travelling down a seven kilometre road connecting neighbouring Mbacke with Touba's heart.

As somebody called them, as soon as you approach the mosque (if you hire a Taxi, he will drop you right into their hands usually unless instructed otherwise), "trip advisors" come to you to provide you (ladies) with sthg to cover your head and body - even if you have one - and to give you a tour, even when you don't want. You're constantly reminded throughout the "tour" that people give money to support the "community" and given how rich the Marabouts tend to be, you can tell who's getting the bigger share of the cake. I am muslim myself and did not feel any feeling of piety or connection with God at the mosque. Also architecturally it's big but that's that, nothing special to mention compared for example with mosques in Turkey or elsewhere. It wasn't worth the trip and I felt harassed the whole time for money. I ended up "donating" 10,000 and the "guide" suggested I give 10,000 per person (which I didn't). Nothing else to see in town. Maybe worth going with a Senegalese to get a real experience, else I thought it was one of the major "wrip-offs" in the country for foreigners.

Unless you are travelling via Touba to somewhere else and have a few minutes to spare, in my view, the mosque is not worth the visit and non muslims are not allowed into the mosque, only the outer enclosure.

This is a lovely peaceful mosque. Women are required to wear a head scarf and long skirt or wrap for entry. Men need long trousers and no hat. You can carry your shoes around with you as you walk around so no need to pay anyone. We had a guide to give us a brief history of the mosque as we walked around. It was very interesting.

The Grand Mosque is why people come to Touba and it is impressive. One has to be aware that major construction work will be ongoing till at least 2017/2018. Many elements are being redone that includes the minaretts as well as many ceilings.
I still felt it was worth the visit and took a guide to see the Mosque as well as the cemetery and the library.
Beware of proper clothing choices and shoes which can the taken on and off quickly.

If you want to visit the mosque you can do it alone, but if you stop with a car immediately "trip advisors" will join to you. They promise that they will help and guide you for free. But it's not true. They get and "take care" your shoes until you dont give present or money for them.
So pick up your own shoes, flip-flop immediately when you take off!
Ladies! Dont forget to cover your hair and your shoulders before you enter!
Your car is in safe in the parking next to the church.
I hope I could help you!

Visiting the great Mosque in Touba was one of the highlights of our trip to Senegal. We had a guided tour of this beautiful structure. We offered prayers and learned about the Mosque’s history. We learned that there are about 3 million pilgrims who journey here each September and villagers welcome these visitors into their homes providing food and accommodation. There are no restaurants or hotels in Touba. Alhamdulilah.

the only real reason to visit Touba to to see this amazing place. it's undergoing another facelift, so expect a few years of scaffold. that said it's cool to see how the work is progressing, and the bizarre (to western eyes) African way of working.
You have to have a tour guide and they will explain everything, it's really impressive.
