Plaza de la Independencia is a typical Mexican colonial square. It features a grand church and arcade government building and colorful mansions of the richest citizens of the city. There is a park in the middle of the square and a typical kiosk. All very standard stuff for Mexico, but this plaza is very well maintained as are the buildings around it giving it every pristine, fresh look.

The whole old town is in excellent condition and the main square the a beautiful place. The mix of old buildings and green vegetation.

This plaza is very pretty and is complemented by beautiful buildings such as the cathedral, the library and other colourful colonial style buildings. We were amused by the comically small police patrol cars that circle the plaza as well. There is supposed to be a light show at 8pm Thursday to Sunday in front of the library. Unfortunately we weren't there on those days.

Central plazas often give you a good sense of a town, and this was the case in Campeche. The plaza is pleasant, low-keyed, and not crowded at all. Several major buildings face the plaza, inlcuding the cathederal.

Beautiful plaze to set and watch the life of Campche. Large trees shade the cast iron benches beware the pigeon droppings from them though. The cental kiosk houses tourist info and tickets for the trolleyride around the city, 100 pesos and approx. one hour of a excellent view thru the city.

Drove 2.5 hours to Campeche, the walled city. It was definitely worth the drive. The streets within the walled part of the city are extremely narrow. Parking is definitely difficult to find. There are lots of stores and restaurants as you stroll through the streets. All the buildings are painted bright colors. We viewed the sea gate and main guardhouse.
Independence Square with the beautiful cathedral and the pavilion in the center. Very family-friendly.

Much of what happens in Campeche seems to take place around the Plaza de la Independencia. The square, which features a large gazebo, where the tourist info booth is located, dates back to the mid 16th century. It is a place where the community seems to gather, indeed, you can get your shoes shined or just sit and watch the world unfold. In the evenings, there are different events taking place here.We were here the first week of December, the beginning of FICH Festival Internacional 2018, an annual affair that takes place every year. These free events happen around town and significantly in the Plaza. On our last night here, the Campeche Orchestra, backed up by talented singers, played their lively music to a very enthusiastic crowd.
Also, every Friday, Saturday and Sunday night , there is a 30 minute light and sound show, depicting Campeche's history, projected on El Palacio Centro Cultural, very spectacular.
Must sees around the plaza, include Santa Iglesia Catedral, located on the east side, Casa No. 6, a restored colonial casa, is on the west side and if you desire a tour of the city and the surrounding barrios, you can take Transporte Touristico, This pleasant, open- air tourist bus is located on the south end. For 100 pesos p/p, you can take a tour which takes you though the old town and the barrio of San Francisco, along the Malecon, to the barrio of San Roman and back to the plaza. Among the buildings that you will see are Iglesia de San Francisco and the Iglesia de San Roman, where you will make a short stop.This small, beautiful church features the Cristo Negro. This tour is very much worthwhile.

A great place to sit and people watch. Walk through the buildings and a get a good feel of days gone by and how people used to live.

Basically this is the "center of it all." After visiting the Malecon in Campeche, you must go here. You experience a lot of the history of Campeche by visiting this location.

Will be visiting on the Le Champlain in November. My travel buddy has mobility issues. How far is the walk from the cruise port to the Plaza?
