This site is easy to visit. The most impressive thing to see is the carved Mayan frieze. It is in excellent condition and is surprisingly intact. It is necessary to have someone unlock the room for you - it is upstairs at one of the main pyramids. Definitely seek the person with the key - and we tipped him as... More

Interesting place in the jungle Not crowded place, very romantic and close to caramkul - worth to visit both places in the same day - to caramkul you need to have car or transport - open from 8-14.30

It only takes a little while to see. As the other reviews say the carvings are totally worth seeing.

This is a relatively small site, but only a couple of kms off the main road - it has what a lot of other Mayan sites have, but it also has some painted sculptures that other sites don't have and they are truly amazing. To think of their history, how they have survived and to see the colour still intact... More

Small Maya ruins with outstanding sculpturework. The site itself is small and its main attraction is sculptural freeze in the middle of the pyramid. Amazing experience. Very good to combine with Calacmul visit.

If you are in the area there is no reason not to dip in to Balamku. Small, of course, compared to the hulking Becan (relatively) near by but the frieze is super amazing. This archaeologist was impressed.

Balamku is not very far from Calakmul and even though it is a smaller site it is well worth visiting. There are some impressive structures at this site and a very unusual carving within a locked area. You will need to ask at the entrance for someone to unlock the door to the area that contains the carving. The structure... More

Balamku is very conveniently located to Cakakmul (just north of highway 186 and several miles west of Calakmul) and can be seen on the same day. It is a very small site and the architecture is not what you are there to see. You are looking for is a beautifully preserved, 17 meter long, stucco frieze in the Temple of... More

Only a small area of Balamku has been excavated, but the stucco freize that was discovered in 1990 is not to be missed. Balamku' frieze depicts a rich scene of Mayan gods, animals, and men that is distinctly different from those found at any Mayan sites in the region. The frieze is located under lock and key in a reconstructed... More

It is amazing that you can climb the ruins and get to see the murals inside of the main one. It's worth the visit. It is far from Campeche.
