Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Really enjoyed my outing to this place. Please note that it is sign-posted from the main road, but some of the signs are hard to spot. When we arrived, we discovered a telephone number on the board and a guide arrived in about 20 minutes. Best to phone and make arrangements ahead of time. Note that the area around the Rock is fenced and is locked - for security of the site, as well as people safety. Our guide was quite knowledgeable and the Rock Art is interesting, although a fair bit is not clear and has been damaged. The worst is people who write their names over the artwork. We then went further up and along, to another viewing Rock, as well as a cave. Apparently you can also walk to a viewing spot at the top of the hill, but we never had enough time. Make sure you allocate enough time to do the circular walk and there is a bit of climbing the hill! There is the usual entrance fee.

We followed the instructions in the lonely planet and walked quite far out of town towards Bwawani. We got a bit lost and someone kindly pointed us on the right way pointing at a massive boulder on a nearby hilltop. We clambered up the hill pushing past trees and climbing over rocks(there's an easier path from the other side of the hill which we found out later). At the top is a huge boulder with rock art at the bottom of it. There's a nice view from nearby. A local said that they receive quite a few visitors a week and that they're currently building a post to help tourists find the place. It was cool seeing such old paintings in their natural setting.

We would not have found it without a guide. when we got to the site area, it was fenced and the gate was locked. There was a sign with a phone # and after 15 min. a curator came with keys. We climbed a rugged trail for some 20 min. before we came to the rock art. it was stunning! The guide and curator spoke English well and gave us a good history and meaning of the site. The views of the city were spectacular! We hiked down below to a huge boulder with a cave underneath where these people lived. We were told the paintings are 40,000 years old. It was spectacular but a challenge, I did it and I am 82 yrs. old!

Igereke Rock is one of the best off the beaten path place to visit in Iringa and Tanzania. Local guide (Nguli Nzira +255 766 662 777), and one of the original elders taking care of the conversation zone gave us a great history lesson and lead the hike through the hill. Rates are posted clearly in the entrance. Going without guide can be risky and you lose so much of the explanation and the importance of the site. Do it now, before it becomes one of the main sites to visit in Tanzania. Highly recommended.

If you are in Iringa you should definitely go to this place. It is easy to go by dala dala. It's better to call first to be sure that someone is there for you 0766 662 777. The entry cost 10 000 tsh per person. Mister Ngulinzira give us a lot of explanation about the painting and the place. It's a local NGO that is taking care of the place.
