I took the train to Classe - only 5 minutes on the regionale. It was cold and foggy and the entrance to the basilica wasn't easy to find. Inside is a huge space with the chancel the highlight - a tender portrait of Apollinare wiht his sheep. The alabaster sarcophagi along the aisles are beautiful. The setting gives it a... More

A bit out of the main city but worth the trip. Outside provides a feel for what I would expect most churches would have like when built, open fields and not cluttered. However an adjacent restaurant, hotel does take a little away. Inside a simple must see mosaic.

We left the best for last. You need a car or bus to get here. It is about 20 mins drive outside Ravenna where the old port of classe once was. Outside the church is worth nothing. As soon as you enter you are in heaven. It is a total must.

I visited this 6th century church on a cold, damp and foggy October morning and was astounded by the luminosity and exquisite detail of the mosaics which cover the walls and ceiling above the altar. There is a timeless elegance in their execution which is hard to describe.

It is so special to stand in this church visit the mosaics and see how old they are. I loved it. It is in a lovely very flat area - seemed good for cyclists.

Like most of the sites in Ravenna, this church just one train stop south is absolutely beautiful. It is worth the short trip to head down there. You will be rewarded by more beautiful mosaics and a grand basilica. The cost to get in is not included in the five museums in Ravenna and will cost you an extra €6.50.... More

Like many churches in Ravenna, this basilica in Classe, just outside Ravenna, contains elaborate mosaics. There are tickets combining this basilica with Theodorik's mausoleum and the national museum in Ravenna. A bike is a good way to visit this place and the rest of Ravenna.

The Basilica of Sant'Apollinare in Classe rises in all its solemn grandeur at a distance of 8 kilometres from the centre of Ravenna. Commissioned by archbishop Ursicino, the church was built by Julian Argentarius during the first half of the 6th century, on an ancient burial area used in the late 2nd or early 3rd century. Apparently, Saint Apollinaris -... More

Also on the Unesco list but not included on the combo ticket which allows you to visit 5 places for 9.50. This one is 6.50 (expensive) I would go for the 5 places in Ravenna, not worth to drive the extra 7 kms.

The Basilica of Sant' Apollinare in Classe is an important monument of Byzantine art near Ravenna, Italy. When the UNESCO inscribed eight Ravenna sites on the World Heritage List, it cited this basilica as "an outstanding example of the early Christian basilica in its purity and simplicity of its design and use of space and in the sumptuous nature of...
