Outstanding collection of folk art from the state of Oaxaca
Dec. 2018 • Friends
Wonderful museum of Oaxaca art and folk art. Everything from wool natural dyed and loom woven tapetes to exquisitely painted alebrijes, or fanciful animals and fantasy figures hand carved from the wood of the copal tree. Clay pieces of black pottery as well as terra-cotta pieces. Special exhibits are always enjoyable, like the young artists contest and exhibition and Rosas y Revelaciones, an exquisite collection of Virgen of Guadalupe themed textiles. This museum has the best of the best.

Museum closed for renos until end January 2017
Dec. 2016 • Couples
Was highly recommended to us and supposed to be one of the best expositions of Oaxaca folk art. However, when we arrived we were advised that major renovations were in progress and the place was closed until scheduled reopening the end of January, 2017. The gift shop was open and had some interesting things from the region.

Mexican Folk Art
Mar. 2014 • Friends
Located a short bus ride south of Oaxaca, the Mexican Folk Art Museum hosts juried art including black pottery, painted wood carvings, paintings, murals, and much more. The rooftop patio provides a lovely view of the village. The gift shop is excellent with many local crafts. A lovely bathroom fronts the interior patio. When you're done with the museum, walk along the side streets to local potters including the famous Dona Rosa (rather kitschy). The church across from the museum is lovely.
