Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Assomada, Santiago's second biggest town and its agricultural center, lies at an altitude of 550m asl. Well known is its market, which takes place every Wednesday and Saturday and which attracts a lot of locals.
The most photogenic part is, where they sell fruit and vegetables in an area half covered by an arcaded building, half in the open. Only women are doing the selling and most of the buying, and it is quite interesting to see how they are dressed. Most don't mind being photographed, a few will complain or make an angry face.
The choice of food is not very exotic, so from this point of view this is not an exciting place or event and in other parts of Africa or elsewhere one will find much more colourful markets.
What we liked best was the approx one hour walk from the market and out of Assomada into the narrow, very fertile valley of Boa Entrada, where can be found the Poilón, a giant Kapok, the Cape Verde's biggest tree.

the colors, the noises, the smells, the location: it all adds up to the experience of visiting this local market, that offers veggies, fish, wood, meat etc etc. On a Wednesday or Saturday the whole of Assomada is turned into a market.

Just two Miles from Assomado there’s Boa Entrada, with a 500 year old extremely large tree. We only knew, because our taxidriver wanted to show us. He takes you across the whole island by the way and is one of the few native taxidrivers that talks in English. Number Louis: 00 231 9251 344

This is a typical west African market, and great to walk around and look at the wares on offer. We bought some fruit with the help of our guide, as we did not want to pay over the top! Many of the stalls have similar products and some of the stalls continue in the road outside even when the main market is closed.

How much you like it will depend on how you feel about crowds and, if you go to the meat section, the blood and dead animals all around, but otherwise this is an interesting place for the hustle and bustle and for the more mainland African feel of the place. Remember that if you buy fruit or vegetables you should wash them thoroughly (or peel/boil them) first just to be safe.

Stopped here during our island tour specifically to visit the market. It opens on Wednesdays and Saturdays, we went on a Saturday.
It it a bustling interesting place with a two storey indoor part and large outdoor area around the outside of the building.
Here you seem to be able to buy most things. The upper floor had lots of clothing and shoe stalls, whilst there were several people making the clothes on treadle sewing machines. Downstairs there are lots of food stalls selling vegetables, herb and spices plus meat and fish. Outside are mor food stalls, clothing stalls and many others. Not to mention stalls selling cooking pots or hair extensions!
A great place to experience a Cape Verde market.

We went to this market on wednesday with high expectations. But our trip became a huge dissapointment. The market has changed to a furniture market. Only one or two stalls with fruits and vegetables are left. Because we thought we might have made a mistake we also visited the market on friday and saturday. But on thes the market was the same. A lot of furniture but no African atmosphere at all. We don't know why but for tourists this market is not worth a visit anymore.

Walked here from our guesthouse one morning. It's a wonderful insight into all the local produce and farmers' lives. There are two main areas/buildings - one with food, meat, veg, fruit etc - and the other with clothing. The food one was definitely worth a lengthy explore, the other wasn't so good although I think you could get things made, copied or altered if you wanted.

we stopped here on the way to Tarrafal to buy some fruits and visit the scenery.
I thought we were the only tourists in the whole city of Assomada and in particar on the market.
People did not really regard us much and of course it was possible to take some interesting shots of that scene. Can't confirm the rather negative reports of some other travellers.
While the route to Assomada is very beautyful, so is the market. Tarrafal was rather disappointing though.

The market in Assomada on a Saturday is amazing - noisy with so much activity. The roads around are clogged with cars, people and buses bringing goods to market and with shoppers. There is everything here from fruit and veg to live chickens and huge tuna. What and experience!
