Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

It’s a bit of a drive from Mtskheta, but we’ll worth it if you have a car. It’s a bit more unique than some of the others, and it was my favorite of the trip. The frescos are beautifully preserved and you can see the cave complexes on the hills behind the compound. It’s a working monastery as well.

During our tree weeks trip to Georgia, we attended multiple monasteries and churches. Shio-Mgvime Monastery is an amazing and a peaceful place, far away from the tourist hustle. We were lucky to meet a monk in Mtsheta who recommended to take a drive to Shio-Mgvime Monastery as he was from this Monastery, so we came with him together. We were worried it would be too far but it’s not a long drive from Mtsheta; plus it’s a nice drive. Highly recommended.

You can get to the monastery from Mtskheta - there is a pointer to the monastery on the central square of the city. The road is one. The Shio-Mgvime Monastery is a medieval monastic architectural complex, not far from the city of Mtskheta. It is located in a narrow limestone gorge on the north bank of the Mtkvari (Kura), about 30 km from Tbilisi. The first monastic community on this site was founded in the 6th century by the monk Shio, one of the thirteen Assyrian fathers who arrived in Georgia as Christian missionaries. The upper church (Zemo Eklesia) named after the Mother of God is the central part of the Shio-Mgvime monastery and built at the turn of the 12th century by the order of King David IV. Originally a domed church, it was later destroyed by a foreign invasion and rebuilt in 1678, as a basilica. The monastery was devastated by the invasion (1614-1616) of the Persian troops of Shah Abbas I. Prince Givi Amilahvari rebuilt the monastery in 1678, but in 1720 the Ottoman occupation of Georgia led to yet another destruction of the Shio-Mgvime monastery. The monastery of the restored Amilahvari in 1733 was again destroyed by the Persians less than two years later. Subsequently, the Shio-Mgvime Monastery was restored, its interior was renovated in the XIX century, but the monastery was never able to regain its past significance in the spiritual life of Georgia. During the Soviet era the monastery was closed, but at present it is active and attracts many pilgrims and tourists.

Expecting something much more sprawling than what we found at Shio-Mgvime monastic cave complex, we weren’t prepared for all the hills. Though reaching it took us through the rolling hills and over the crest of a limestone canyon, the highlight was the saint, Shio’s, grave.

Visit Jvari Church on top of the hill overlooking Mtskheta before you visit the small city. The view from this church is spectacular. You can see a large area including the joining of the two rivers and the whole city The cathedral in the city is nice but a bit touristy. Since this is the spiritual heart of Georgia it is well worth seeing.

It is a hidden place near Mtskheta. As all monasteries it has it's on history and place is beautiful, just like many other places in Georgia or other country, but, this place is far not a must see option.

The monastery was founded in the sixth century; it was destroyed many times, as many times restored. Located in a picturesque valley. From Mtskheta 9 kilometers to drive. An amazing place with history

Beautiful Place to visit. you cant get there easily from Samtavro monastry, about 10 minutes car ride, great road. i was there in november and the road was beautiful, yellow and red leaves everywhere, even the road was worth the trip. the monastry is in secluded location, surrounded by mountans from 3 sides, there are monks still living there. Church is also interesting, paintings on the wall are different from typical georgian style.they have bees there, so you can purchase high quality honey from monks.

A long drive to visit this monastery. Get to go down a few steps to see the location where Monk Shio had prayed for many years.
