Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

As per my reading online, this place is open for public all the time. After a hard 1 hour drive, and again struggling another hour to find the place, we found a big boundary fence, with unprofessional guard asking us to be far because: Entry is restricted. I told him that I saw many nice photos for many people in this place. He said: they are the workers inside, we can’t stop them taking photos.
My advice now is: Don’t visit this place. A long drive in vain.

We made this trip last weekend, and I am not sure about the need for 4x4. There are well defined gravel roads that take you right to the site without the need for serious navigation.
Having navigated from the old road next to the current Highway and exiting through Zekreet, I would recommend the Zekreet route. Just pass through the Cuban Hospital round about and continue on the blacktop road until you enter Zekreet village. Continue straight keeping the concrete road dividers to your left, and the road turns to the right in what appears to be between houses. You will emerge with a camel farm on your right, and exposed gas lines in front of you. The road goes over these, and just stay on the trail until you intersect with other main trail... turn left which takes you past an old farmstead and you are on your way.
Search Google maps before you leave, or enroute, and you can clearly see the roads listed above. Stay on the main roads and you should not have a problem. We deflated our tyres slightly and drove at a comfortable speed and encountered no problems at all in a small gutless SUV.
Along the way there is a side attraction works by Richard Serra (Huge steel plates) which is a short drive off of the main trail, and again no need for 4x4. Continue North through the gated fence, and onto Film City and Mystery Village.
Upon reaching the site we were greeted by the resident guard who offered sweet tea and a brief tour. Despite the set not being featured in any Hollywood movie, but rather local Arabian films, it is worth the drive. Mystery Village is another strange place just a few minutes north, and makes a nice place for a lunch break and more photos.
All in all, given the local attractions in Qatar I would rate this the same as Zubarah Fort, and the Sea-line dunes. None of these sites are going to leave you speechless, but they can make for a fun adventure with friends.

It is west of Doha, some 80km but part of it is rough terrain

We've gone to Film City three different times now and still enjoy going. Granted, its rather small and some may have difficulty finding it, but once you do the tour that the caretaker gives you is a lot of fun and a really cool experience. There's also Mystery Valley about 3 kilometers away (another movie set that was built and then left for the public to enjoy!). Both make for a great picnic spot and the surrounding coastline is pretty good for snorkeling if you're there at high tide or willing to walk out far enough for it to be deep.

Qatar has its own piece of Hollywood set in the most unlikely of places. A newly-built-yet-old looking village deep in the desert of the Zekreet peninsula, hidden behind a canyon.
It is indeed an experience to visit the Film City as it is in the middle of nowhere, quite tricky to find. If you ask anyone out here why this film city was built you will probably get several different answers. One possibility is that it was built for Qatar’s 2022 World Cup promotional video, some can say that it was built for a big Hollywood production.
The truth is that it lacks visitors, and don’t attempt to come here on your own.
The road is not that good so it is not advisable to risk it.
Location:
It is West of Doha, some 80km while part of it is rough terrain.

In the middle of seemingly nowhere the film city suddenly appears. Opening scene of "Transformers" movie was here.

Zekreet peninsula officially called Ras Albruq is an amazing place about an hour West of Doha. Once you get to the village of Zekreet head N-NW through the beautiful jebels, cliffs and valleys until you find the Desert city film set on the horizon. Exploring the set is a fun hour and having shai with the care takers and learning about them makes everyone's day.
After you leave the city drive about 2 kilometers N to the mystery village which is a village of rock huts on the cliffs of a valley. Also part of the film set complex.
Enjoy the views, the beach and the film sets.
Don't forget to stop to watch the kite surfers on the beach near Zekreet village, stop at the ruin of Zekreet fort and stop to see the camels in the village.
You can make it to the film studio in a sedan if you stay on the graded surfaces. If you get off of the graded tracks you may need 4WD.
Enjoy. We sure have on several occassions.

Film city is located next to a spoilt oasis more or less in the middle of nowhere. It is a small group of buildings rumoured to have been used for a scene in Star Wars - I don't think so the place wasn't built when Star Wars was filmed!
Apparently it is/was used for local filming.
One of the caretakers will offer you a cup of tea - don't expect a china cup - do expect to tip him.
There are no toilets.
As other reviewers have mentioned it isn't the easiest place to find.
However, we enjoyed the drive and surrounding scenery.
