Our teenage girls stopped by in the small atelier after viewing the Matisse permanent exhibition and did two lovely paintings. Going through the exhibition, aided by a good audio guide, no one can escape the artistic evolution to liberation and emancipation of color and shape....More

Although slightly off the beaten track it is definately worth making a specific trip to this Matisse Museum opened by the artist himself and containing many pieces of his work donated by him too.The museum is well laid out and certainly is very comprehensive. There is...More

Modern museum in an old building with good sculpture outside. We unfortunately only had time to enjoy the Matisse. Interesting for the breadth of the view of Matisse's work.

We stopped at Le Cateau to have lunch and break our journey when we realised the Musee Matisse was there. This is a beautifully presented exhibition in a lovely old building. We had English audioguides (just enough info.) which enhanced the visit. As well as...More

Spacious intelligently designed museum. Works presented chronologically in coherent groups. Very well done audio guide (and I usually find them annoying). Beautiful collection. AND not at all overly crowded. A very good museum experience.

It's really amazing to experience art as the artist would like you to. The Matisse section of the Museum is set by the artist himself, who donated all the works to it since he was born there and it can give you an excellent idea...More

Hard to imagine that the painter of 'The Dance' was born and raised in this region. So obvious to connect Matisse to Nice. Nevertheless, he made extensive donations to the museum in his hometown. The works of art cover every facet of his evolution in...More
