Having done many fishing charters off the W.A coast, I was drawn to the promotion of the Blue Juice new world class boat the Talasea ll and the Montebellos fishing trip. I boarded on the 22nd of September and there was very little “world class” about my experience.
No air conditioning, no hot water , no beer on tap and a missing tender was the just the start.
Given it was a fishing charter I expected the boat, equipment and crew to be suited to such a trip. Boy, how wrong could I be? Apart from the skipper who was capable, there was nothing else that I could recommend. Most of the reels provided were clunky and poorly maintained. One of the overhead reels that was expected to be used for trolling was useless.
I was disappointed by the lack of rod holders, I would estimate that there were only 4, meaning rods had to be left leaning against the side or left on the deck. No rags to clean hands and I had to ask every day for a bucket of soapy water to be set up so we could wash our hands. Our bait buckets were rarely filled unless we asked, and the limit of squid for bait( 2 boxes per day) was mean.
To give an example of how poor the deckies were , I reflect on the last morning. We travelled for 2 hours before we had our first drop. When it came time to fish nothing was ready. As the skipper put the boat in position, the box of squid was still frozen, no buckets of fish pieces organised and the rods stacked in a pile in the corner then we all had to scramble to grab bait and rods.
I was extremely disappointed in the whole trip, the bathroom was mouldy, with broken tiles and the shower screen inoperable.
The twin berth cabin, with a wooden divider to convert a double into 2 singles, was laughable.
Over priced and underwhelming.

Hi SC - Thank you for your view of the Tour, and sorry it was not everything you hoped for. Unfortunately, an issue with the hot water system also created issues for the AC system. working in such remote locations parts ordered have to come from the east coast. nothing is overnight. Technicians were on the boat for 2 days to attempt to create an operational system however the lack of parts available prevented them from getting the systems up and running. The door to the shower you mentioned derails with rough treatment from guests, a new door system and screen are planned to be fitted with a full bathroom renovation over the summer period. We made the decision not to fit rod holders to the entire gunnel of the boat, only placing holders at the rear for trolling. Guests fail to respect the reels treating them like winches locking up drags in a holder, winching large fish, and stripping gears. Guests also leave sinkers banging on the sides and gunnels destroying the paintwork. Alternative methods are being planned to hold rods away from the gunnels to prevent damage to gear and the boat. The rod holders do not prevent guests from fishing Over the years we have found fresh bait to be far better than squid and other frozen bait, in most cases it only takes a couple of boxes of squid to get the ball rolling with fish to keep and fish for bait. Increases in shark numbers and changes to government fishing regulations on our West Coast have meant we have to change everything we do, Guests and general fishing people also have to change their expectations, no longer can our guests or any angler fish sunrise to sunset in large areas of the coast and more changes are on the way with further reductions to allowances coming statewide. These are big changes that our guests and all fishing people on the West Coast need to adjust to. The new rules are complex, Some species are not allowed to be returned to the water no matter the size, there are also massive reductions to the number of fish we can retain on board. It will take time not only for guests to adjust but for all marine tourism businesses including ourselves. The boat Talasea II is far more comfortable than a standard cray boat conversion and will only improve in amenities and accessories as the seasons move on, becoming a mother ship using additional vessels to fish from.

I just returned from a 6 night fishing trip to the Monte Bello island in what I can say was a very average charter. After the safety briefing we were informed that the A/C was broken and the hot water system was out of action. The glass sliding door on the shower on the lower deck was broken and only 1 section of the 3 section door was sliding which made it extremely difficult to enter whilst under way. The shower also had a broken recess tile with sharp edges protruding in the shower area.
On the first morning the main deck toilet would not flush away the bowl contents which required the crew to pump down the system.
The refrigerated esky on the flybridge level stopped working ,with the latches on the esky broken with sharp edges causing much bleeding on the legs of who ever walked passed it.
The charter provided fishing gear was either clunky or seized. On day 4 of the charter we had used our daily allowance of squid and had to rely on fish caught while trolling.
There was only 1 RIB , due to the other being lost on a previous charter. So no chasing Pelagics around headlands.
There were no rod holders on this so called fishing charter boat.
At dinner one night there was a prawn dish served which allowed my friend and myself 1 1/2 prawns each...the other passengers had 3 or 4 prawns each. I would have thought an allowance of 10 prawns each would have been the minimum serve. The advertised on board beer on tap that is available for purchase was not working either.

Most of the crew were friendly and helpfull and did the best they could with what they had.

Strongly advise against using this company and look elsewhere.

CB.

The door to the shower you mentioned derails with rough treatment from the guests, a new door system and screen are planned to be fitted with a full bathroom renovation over the summer period. All sewage and grey water are held on board and only released when the boat is in a place acceptable to release the effluents safely in a controlled manner well offshore and not in marine park zones. Once the crew were aware the tank was emptied, a lot of guest overnight use can fill the tanks quickly. however far better the sewerage does not flow uncontrolled in a marine reserve or whilst guests are swimming. We made the decision not to fit rod holders to the entire gunnel of the boat, only placing holders at the rear for trolling. Guests fail to respect the reels treating them like winches locking up drags in a holder, winching large fish, and stripping gears. Trolling the headland areas is not always possible, Much of the islands are a green zone where no fishing is allowed, recreational or charter many of the headlands you are not allowed to troll. The larger boat was used for a great deal of trolling along the reef edges and on outer reefs etc, New tenders are being organized however insurance replacements are slow it is unfortunate however like much in Western Australia, it has to come from the east coast or overseas, and very little if any stock is retained in WA it takes time. Changes to government fishing regulations on our West Coast have meant we have to change everything we do, Guests and general fishing people also have to change their expectations, no longer can our guests or any angler fish sunrise to sunset in large areas of the coast and more changes are on the way with further reductions to allowances. It will take time not only for guests to adjust but for all marine tourism businesses including ourselves. Some of the activities we planned were not to the guests liking because it was not fishing, however, no longer can you simply fish all day. New activities and sight tours have been added to the itinerary for 2024 to complement the fishing and food. The boat Talasea II is far more comfortable than a standard cray boat conversion and will only improve in amenities as the seasons move on.

Previously had some great experiences on this charter.......but an expensive new boat (to combat govt fishing restrictions) has meant this is no longer a genuine fishing charter and not yet a tour either. Very little time spent actually fishing and the crew whilst trying their best were frustrated with so many things breaking on the 'new' boat. Really expensive trip for very few fish.....sadly I can no longer recommend.

This was my first Abrolhos Island fishing trip and I had such a great time. Skipper Tom & the crew Armund & Liam were very professional and attentive to their clients. When fish were caught, they were filleted and vacuum packed and into the freezer in a very short time and we caught heaps of fish.
Most impressively was how they kept a sharp eye on us to untangled knotted lines and were able to release snagged lines, pure magic how they did this. I hope there’s a spot for me to book next year.

Highly recommended. I have been going to the Abrolhos Islands with a few years now.
The crew have always been super friendly and attentive to every need.
You don't need to worry about a thing. The food is fantastic and plenty of it!
All you have to do is fish!!
And there are tons of really great fish at the Abrolhos. Pink snapper, bald chin groper, dhufish, mahi mahi, tuna.
You won't be disappointed.

My second trip to the Abrolhos with Bluejuice Charters. Tom the skipper and Liam and Logan the crew were great. They took care of all my needs and helped me achieve my goal of catching my nemesis - a big Dhufish! (best catch of the trip)
Thanks a million - I'll be back for a third trip to the Monte Bello's next year.
