- omegonBangkok, Thailand251 contributionsGetting to the lake is the hardest partUnlike Kolsai Lake, the walk from the parking lot to the actual lake is not that long. You can go there by horse (12,000 KZT round-trip per person), vehicle (2,000 KZT round-trip per person), or by foot (you’ll be walking along the same road as the cars for around 1.5 KM one way). The hardest part is getting to the actual lake as You need to be able to know how to drive across a river and the roads there are in pretty bad condition. An SUV is a must. However, you can pay locals near the start of this road for then to drive you over in their vehicles (I forgot what the price was as I rented my own vehicle). The actual lake is very nice but be sure to also go up to the viewpoint for a better picture of the lake. This is near where the horses come down, from the lake keep on walking up and then turn right further uphill. However, do not walk back on the horse trail as you will be crossing some rivers.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 August 2024
- mrc282World9,129 contributionshigh clearance is a must but no 4x4 needed in auguststarted my drive from saty village at 630 am to beat the crowds. lo and behold, we are the first tourists to arrive a little after 7 am and buy ticket from the park office booth (500 tenge per person, 200 tenge per car parking) i drove here on a subaru outback awd. other vehicles seen on the same day include honda crv, mitsubishi pajero, mitsubishi delica, toyota fortuner, toyota landcruiser, and the omni-present buhanka (russian truck, uaz-452) ferrying most tourists up. details of the driving route, as of august 2024 - 30-40 min bumpy drive from saty village - off road gravel and dirt and small rocks, some parts with washed out sections. there are some uphills, but nothing requiring 4x4 - 2 river crossings. let the buhankas cross first and watch how they cross if you are worried. the second river crossing closer to the lake is deeper. - high clearance is a must, but no 4x4 needed once arrived, you will not see the lake yet. you park your car at the open lot, then can choose to - walk 1.5-2km to lake (upper path with car, or lower path without car) - horseback ride to lake - ride buhanka (500 tenge per person) then walk 350m on a gravel trail down to observation deck . the observation deck is where the postcard photo of lake kaindy is taken. but there is also a vantage point from top, where you look down at lake, however the view top-down is not as impressive happy planning. this lake is much nicer than lake kolsai #1, which is very commercializedVisited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 24 August 2024
- WPLandryFairfax, Virginia589 contributionsDon't drive on your ownWe were informed not to drive on our own. Instead, drive to Saty and park your rental car. There are taxis standing by to take visitors to the lake. The road is rough to say the least and there are multiple water crossings! The drivers know exactly which way to go and which ways not to go, so you're in safe hands with them. Once you get to the lakes, you can hike the entire way, ride a horse part of the way, or take another car part of the way. We opted to hike. If you can do it, it's worth it. It's not a long hike at all and there are lovely views along the way. There is a less traveled trail that set off to the right of the main viewing platform. It's quiet and beautiful!Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 August 2024
- Sudeesh MDubai, United Arab Emirates40 contributionsLake Kaindy, Saty KazakhstanOne of the most beautiful places I've visited is Lake Kaindy. There's a large parking area at the start of the final route, from where you can either hike or take a horse ride. The views along the way to the lake are breathtaking. When you finally arrive, it feels like you've stepped into another world. The lake's crystal-clear waters are surrounded by mountains adorned with alpine trees. The ice-cold water preserves submerged pine trees, creating a unique and mesmerizing sight. If you're lucky, you might even spot wild ducks swimming in the frigid waters.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 8 September 2024

I just come from Kazakhstan. It was incredible exploration trip. Why I like Kaindy in winter time is that it's a great time when it not crowded, fresh winter air. First it seemed like I woul never come to Kaiyndy since it took around 1 h to get there. There were riders who were offering their horses. Despite it was a bit challenging I felt great at the end of hiking. The place is wonderful, and has its own charm!!

I was born in Almaty and feeling ashamed that got to this place for the first time only several years ago. It is a true gem of our region worth spending almost 5 hours just to get there. What makes it even better is that Besides of Kaindy lake itself it's possible to get to Kolsay lakes as well if there is enough time. Do plan to spend at least 2 days to have proper visit to that area. Getting to Kaindy from Saty village takes approx. 1 hour, from Saty to 1st Kolsay lake even less, about 40 minutes. Due to lack of public transportation the only way to get there is with a group of other tourists through local tourist agency or finding a personal guide with transport here on tripadvisor. The area is near chinese border and requires having passport with you at all times. There is also an entrance fee into the park which is about 2$ per person per day which can be used at both Kaindy & Kolsay lakes if visited within 24 hours starting from the moment of entrance. On the way back it is possible to have a quick tour to Charyn Canyon which is 10 km away from the used highway.

It is one of the most beautiful lakes I've ever seen. You need a 4x4 vehicle to get to the lake. There are 2 roads to the lake: first one is from Kegen to the west but I would recommend to take another one that is not far away from Charin canyon. If you go from Almaty to Kegen, take the right turn before crossing Charin river. From Saty village you have completely offroad path for approximately 11 km. We managed to destroy one of the tires :( Be aware that one time you have to cross Kaindy river. We paid 1600 tenge for 2 people and a car. If you go with a tent, you have to pay more. However, if you want to visit Kolsay lakes as well, keep the receipt and then you do not have to pay twice. Keep in mind that this receipt is valid 24 hours, not more. There are no sleeping facilities at Kaindy but you can find some places at Kolsay lakes or in Saty village (3000 tenge per person, i.e. 10-15$). If you like diving, bring your diving suits and enjoy crystal clear water dive. On the way to Kaindy if you go from Kegen, you will see a few villages. I do not know how people live there, far away from civilization. The main activity in summer is mowing the grass for a long winter. You will be surprised how their old vehicles are still in appropriate conditions... Nature is amazing!

Similar to Biel Pond in Hokkaido but this is created an entirely by nature (ie earthquake). We spent about 1.5-2 hours walking around the Lake taking in different vantage points (there are at least 3 we went to) We also saw some people walking off-trail into the woods . The drive to the lake from Saty takes around 1 hour drive even though the distance is not too far as it is a very bad and bumpy road. There is a very basic toilet close to the parking lot and some basic snack stands selling drinks, but no other facilities nearby. You can also a take a horse ride from the parking lot to the lake and/or go around it but I am not sure how much it costs

If you’re a fan of trekking to see natural beauty, this is it! A sunken forest in ice blue water? Yes!
Horses, landscapes the works. As good shape as I keep myself in, I needed it. Whew it was fun and challenging from the base area up and then down to the hidden treasure. In a blink of the earth’s eye, this lake has formed in the last hundred years after a landslide - we’re literally seeing geology happen in real time!

Scenery and vistas are breathtaking. However:
- the bathroom situation is deplorable so prepare/eat accordingly.
- if you choose to take the ‘foot path’ to the lake be aware it’s a somewhat challenging incline and actually the horse trail. As such it’s a mix of mud and horse manure all the way up. Bring appropriate shoes/boots and the love of ‘natural’ smells.
- overall not a trip for the faint of heart as the all-wheel drive ride from Saty to the lower parking lot will bounce you around a lot.
As I say - the vistas and people rate a 5+, but the infrastructure is a 1. Enjoy

This is not an easy lake to get to infact there are no signs on the main road even indicating where it is. I recommend going here with a tour guide who will know whether or not the roads are accessible when you go. From the main road to the gate is 8km. The potholes in the road are as big as a car in places and there is a section of river that has to be crossed. From the gate to the car park is 3 kilometers. From the car park to the lake is another 1 and a half ks that you walk. It’s up a steep hill and then back down a steep hill and then finally you will see the lake. I’m glad I went and saw it but I won’t mske the trip again.

Hi, We are going to visit Almaty in mid October with a year old baby. Will it be safe to take our baby to kaindy lake?
Written 10 September 2024
Hi, I'm planing to visit Almaty and then, Kaindy Lake (and if it's possible, the Canyon... because I know that is on the way). Do you think it's possible to go and back from Almaty to Kaindy in the same day?
I was thinking to rent a car but it's a bit expensive, specially because we will need a 4x4 for the road conditions. Do you recommend any tour agency?
Thanks in advance!

I guess it'd be possible but it's a long ride and I wouldn't recommend it. You have to pass the river to get to Kaindy lake so if you're not used to off ride terrains I wouldn't rent a car. We got there with Friendly tours and they were excellent.
