Te Mata's sole focus is fine wine-making. There's no restaurant or accommodation here, only a small Cellar Door with tastings available. It's open daily over summer, and Wednesday to Saturday in Winter. Appointments are preferred.

The distinctive Coleraine House opposite the winery is private property and the home of the Buck family - the winery's owners. We try and leave them in peace and quiet. Te Mata Estate grows it’s own fruit, and ferments and bottles It’s own wine entirely on site – it’s a 'one stop shop' of wine production. Independent and New Zealand family-owned, it’s like visiting a small factory. Established in 1896, the winery and vineyards were the first in New Zealand to be protected under conservation law as a wine-making heritage site - the 'Te Mata Special Character Zone'.

Five of Te Mata's Showcase wines are listed as 'Five Star’ and ‘Super Classic' in Michael Cooper's Buyer's Guide to New Zealand Wine. The winery has been awarded Robert Parker's highest classification 'Oustanding Producer, Five Stars'. Te Mata Estate wines are available in 45 countries.

I have been several times and this Festive Season, we took two different sets of friends there, who were most impressed.

What a lovely place, and what a great people. They won't only spend all the time explaining everything there is to know about their wine, but will also give you enough (great) tips in the region to fill your weekend. Great experience!

We were recommended to visit here by a friend in the wine industry, we were fortunate to have tobias look after us, he was very knowledgable and passionate about the wines. The flavours were exceptional and arranging delivery back to Australia is easy, they can ship 8 bottles for price of 6, or 15 for price of 12.

By far the best wines we tried in the region! The Gamay Noir was a stand out and a must try. The cellar door isn't as grand as some in the region but the wine absolutely speaks for itself.

When we decided on a road trip to the Hawke's Bay, I knew that the one and only one place that I DEFINITELY wanted to visit was the Te Mata Winery. I love their red wines, specially the Awatea Cabernet Merlot. We had a tasting, and ended up buying 2 bottles of wine to take away too. The Awatea and... More

There are many quality wineries in Hawke's Bay. We went to about a dozen. Some wineries were better for food, others for music, but this place was great for the actual wines.

Very friendly and informative staff. Relaxed tasting and not pretentious at all. Really liked the fact they are completely local to the area.
