About
This elevated area offers panoramic views of Old Quebec and the St. Lawrence River. Winter adrenalin junkies line up by the thousands at Les Glissades de la Terrasse to experience the rush of zooming downhill from 270 feet high (82 meters) in a toboggan speeding up to 60 mph (90 kilometers per hour) to the bottom 500 feet (152 meters) away. Located on the Dufferin Terrace overlooking the St. Lawrence River behind Fairmont Le Château Frontenac, the ride is open from mid-December through late March.

- Dimitris LSydney, Australia51,969 contributionsSpectacular viewsTerrasse Dufferin offers some spectacular views. We walked all around this area and spent there the best part of a day. Quebec is a beautiful city and the views of the old city and the river from here are just amazing. While here we also visited the incredibly beautiful Fairmont Le Château Frontenac. Not to be missed.Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 October 2023
- TERRAvelistaLondon, United Kingdom18,546 contributionsGreat place to have a strollA great place to relax in the sun or in the shade with great views over the water and the Lower town. You can take the funicular from here (right near the statue, located in the glass house) to reach the Lower town, or you can wall all the way to the Citadel (the entrance is on the opposite site though, if you want to visit it). Lots of information about the origins of the terrace and several musicians to entertain you. A very romantic place, if you like history and it reminds me of so many historic European cities. To one side, there are several hotels, some older than others, with probably bird eye view over this whole location.Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 29 October 2023
- Eva TUnited Kingdom5,655 contributionsMust visit placeIt is amazing place from where you can see Lower town, river or take a ride on funicular or see the Citadel. There are several information panels about the history related to its past and preservation. And it's overlooked by stunning Chateau Frontenac. We walked a couple times through it, enjoying the views, talking to local lady who advised what to see/visit in the city. If you are tired there are plenty benches to sit and have a rest. There is also small cafe/ice cream shop. At the end of it you can find tobogan for winter adrenalin seekers. It's must visit place when in the city.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 May 2024

Tour guide was very informative. Take the guided tour if you are in the area. Very interesting tour. Beautiful place to take in the views and get some shade under the many gazebos.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 June 2024
- Devra30Huntington, New York70 contributionsThe One Experience You Should Not Miss in Quebec CityThis is the don't-miss experience of Quebec City! Enjoy views of the St. Lawrence River with mountains in the distance, with the gorgeous and enormous Chateau Frontenac looming just above you. Look down to Basse-Ville under the cliff and look up to higher parts on the cliff including Pierre-Dugua-de-Mons Terrace (which is worth the uphill walk from Dufferin). Step into the Frontenac to see it inside, and enjoy the street performers along the terrace. Take the funicular or stairs down to the charming Basse-Ville (Lower Town), or walk up to higher viewpoints and the Citadelle, or round the corner to enjoy the restaurants and artisans of Haute-Ville (Upper Town).Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 July 2024
- Travel Blog Anna Blunschi509 contributionslovely promenade at the foot of the Chateau FrontenacThe Terrasse Dufferin is the wide promenade at the foot of the Chateau Frontenac. More than 200 years old, the terrace of wooden benches connects the upper town with the historic battlefields on the edge of the old town, where the English and French fought bitterly for supremacy in the New World. Several old cannons from this period still line the promenade. From up here, you have a breathtaking view over the lower town and the majestic Saint Lawrence River, which flows below the city.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 August 2024

- traveltheworld012Rochester, Minnesota17,080 contributionsIn the shadow of Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac, magnificent walking area.We were in Quebec City Wednesday & Thursday, August 7-8, 2024. The peak of tourist season, yet Terasse Dufferin remained nearly deserted. Most tourists walk through here at some point, but most rarely linger or sit to admire the beauty that surrounds it, or to learn the history of this spot. It is the original site of Fort St. Louis built in 1620. Much of the history and artifacts still remain (and can be visited) beneath the Terasse. On top the terrasse you are treated to spectacular views of the St. Lawrence River below. Catch the Funicular here to get to the lower city or just sit on one of the benches to watch people go by in front of the magnificent Hotel Frontenac building. Often one will hear music or song from a street performer here as we did. If you can, spend some moments here to enjoy the scenery or reflect on the history of this spot.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 August 2024
- Pioneer0943Elmhurst, Illinois53 contributionsGreat for a Stroll, But Not Much Activity on the TerraceWe didn't spend a lot of time on the Terrace when we were there earlier in September. It was a pleasant stretch of walkway to stroll, but there was nothing happening. Based on other reviews it does sound like the Terrace does have interesting events happening but nothing happened in the 3 days while we were staying at the Chateau.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 September 2024

Absolutely loved Quebec City at Christmas time! Toboggan slides are a must - $3.00 per rider. Dragging the toboggan up the ramp was a workout but the view from the top was breathtaking. The river was partially iced over and the Chateau looked sensational as we flew down the toboggan run. Loved it!

The elevated terrace offers beautiful views of Old Town Quebec City and the St. Lawrence River. Towards the end of the terrace is an toboggan run that looks like a blast in the winter! Benches line the railing so you can sit, relax and watch the happenings nearby. We enjoyed watching the boat traffic on the St. Lawrence River while we drank our coffee. Sometimes, there were musicians singing and/or playing instruments.

This is the boardwalk to the side of Hotel Frontenac and we were there on a beautiful day as part of a tour of the Old City. Great to view the St Lawrence River and for people watching. The guide did discuss the slide at the end for the winter to slide down onto the snow/ice in the winter. Very enjoyable.

Right in front of the most photographed hotel in the world (Chateau Frontenac), this is a great spot to relax and enjoy the view of the river. The terrace wraps around the hotel, facing the Citadel. You can get here by riding the Funicular cable car, walking directly up the 310 steps of “The Breakneck Stairs”, or walking the longer way around the stairs up near the great huge mural.

Have been here in the summer (delightful) but a whole different fun in wintertime. Sledding is a must! It’s fast but not scary. And for us, big heavy snow flakes just makes it a postcard to winter. Walk up to see the view, enjoy the setting. We stayed at Chateau so it was literally out the backdoor. Brrrrrr very very cold coming off the river for the evening pictures.

After exiting Quebec's famous Chateau Frontenac Hotel, you will find the Dufferin Terrace. Under the platform are the ruins of the Castle of Saint-Louis (the former official residence of the French and British governors). You can look down at some of the ruins through the glass from a specific area of the platform. Most tourists who come to this platform will overlook the St. Lawrence River by the railings. The view is broad, quite beautiful and romantic, and makes people linger endlessly.

Nice walk even in November. Lots to see along the Saint Lawrence River, close to other places to visit in Old Quebec too. Bundle up if you go in the winter time, the wind from the river could be quite fierce

Is the Terrasse Dufferrin the same as the Promenade du Gouvernuers?
Written 8 August 2015
The Terrace Dufferin is the very large boardwalk that runs in front of the magnificent Chateau Frontenac. As you walk down the boardwalk to the east it narrows and then you come to a set of stairs that go up the side of the cliffs to the Promenade des Gouverneurs at the top - actually a part of the Citadelle. At the very top you can see the very best view in Quebec from the perfectly placed Cap Diamants - just in front of the Governor General's residence in the Citadelle. So - in fact - the Promenade is the upper extension of the Dufferin Terrace. Certainly well worth the climb.
