Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I went with my wife and daughters (age 7 and 10). After a 10 km bike ride from Atwater market, we were ready to take a break. The museum is very calm and relaxing. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable, and the cost is nominal ($9.80 for a family pass). Children are able to participate in the Xplorers programs (featured in many National Parks and Historic Sites throughout Canada). By watching my kids go through the process to earn their dog tags, I learned about the importance of the fur trade in North America in less than an hour.

We were fortunate enough to visit this place on a sunday, which not only meant free parking, but also meant for ten dollars we could go on a historical canoe ride through Lachine Canal. Historically the canoe ride with the guide was just okay, but the park, museum, and just the fact that you could get on the water of such an important waterway to north american history was awesome! If you have younger kids the fur trade museum would be great, lots of things to see and touch, like the furs involved in the trade between natives and europeans. Great way to spend an afternoon, but check the montral tourism website (www.tourisme-montreal.org) to see exactly what is happening... This place seems to have all kinds of festivals for cheap!

When the Europeans arrived circa 1600, Canada's lakes and steams were full of beavers, but they almost went extinct. How did that happen? This small museum tells the story well. It's free and well-suited for children. Our English-speaking grandson (8) was immediately immersed in gathering the information necessary to fill out the discovery booklet provided by the staff! Many hands-on displays. Interaction of ecology, culture, business and politics revealed through the story of the fur trade. Don't miss it.

This small, but well presented museum is located in a historic stone warehouse on the Lachine Canal and is part of the . Lachine Canal National Historic Site of Canada. [--]
Exhibits explain the history of the fur trade in north America. The guide was cheerful, well informed and bilingual. Visitors learn about the life of the voyageurs and the role of the fur trade on the development of Canada. The facility is air conditioned (a real plus on the 32C day we visited the area) and accessible to the handicapped. We especially enjoyed the film that showed how fur coats are made. What an eye opener.
This museum is family friendly and would be of interest to anyone who would like to learn more of the history of the area. Allow about an hour to see the entire museum. A free parking voucher is included in your entry fee.
Nearby, on summer weekends, visitors can take a ride in a voyageur canoe. Bike and rollerblade trails extend for kilometers along the canal.

Great little museum! We spent 90 minutes there and loved it. We had visited Fort William in Thunder Bay, Ontario a few months ago and this was the perfect companion museum to really better understand the fur trade history. We rented bicycles at Ca Roule near the Old Port and road 12.5 kilometers one way ( a leisurely 75 minute ride) along the bike path next to the Lachine Canal.

The Lachine museum is a rare find in a beautiful area of Lachine. Not only is the museum well laid out and great for kids and adults, but there is also a beautiful walking as well as biking path through Lachine. This is right on the Lake and is so picturesque! To the west it will bring you to Dorval and if you go east you can travel right down to Old Montreal. Along the biking and walking paths there are picnic tables for picnics and benches to just sit back and enjoy the lake. You can see the boats going through the canal from here and watch the traffic on the Mercier Bridge. It is peaceful and quiet.

It is a small but very beautiful building crammed with "stuff". They displays are very clustered together and not a large amount of cash was put into this important venue. If you are a historian maybe it holds treasures but as a passerbyer I flew this museum without much interest.

It is located in a great spot right on the canal and is an easy walk from the locks a little further up. It is packed with information and artefacts and some interactive exhibits. The whole museum is essentially one room, so it doesn't take long to go through. Kids had a great time here.

Knowledgeable guides to inform visitors of the beginning history of Canada and how it relates to the fur trade. Fascinating and a great intro upon entering the country. Consider yourself lucky if you happen to be assigned to Chantaille - personality plus and specific information. Many samples of furry animals to touch and a few interactive displays for kids. Area itself interesting due to the river route and why Montreal was established.

Stopped here on our way into the city and it made early history make a lot more sense. Highly recommend as a starting place. Montreal so influenced by trading and the canal and this museum, while geared towards children, is a solid introduction. Lots of items to interact with and feel/touch. Most impressed by the enthusiasm of the park guides and their extensive knowledge. Outside the museum you will find a lovely park and walking path which you can stroll down to the restored locks and the Lachine Canal Museum. Also a great spot to bike to from downtown. Very pleasant visit. Entrance fee is reasonable and part of the Museum Card Pass if you choose to get one. Pass is good for 3 days and gains entry into most museums. Good option if you are a first timer to Montreal.

What is the best day to get here using the metro?
Written 12 September 2019
The Museum is not accessible directly by metro. You would have to take a bus from the metro. The STCUM website can help you plan your route. Also make sure to check Museum hours as it is only open in the Summer.
