As you exit the Place-d'Armes subway station, turn right on Saint-Urbain street and make your way up the hill till you reach the Place-d'Armes Square. Rich in history, it is one of the most prestigious places in Montreal, and its second oldest public square. In 1693, it was known as Place de la Fabrique. In 1721, it was renamed Place-d'Armes.... Somewhat overlooked even though it has a prominent place in the Old Town right in front of Notre Dame. An intriguing place with lots of local history dating from the founding of Montreal to more modern events. It is worth looking around at for a few minutes before heading on elsewhere in old Montreal.

A quiet park in the financial district of Old Montreal. The Notre Dame Cathedral towers over this park which draws a lot of tourists. It's a great place to rest if you plan a walking trip to Old Montreal.

Walked around the Place d'Armes and felt like walking through history. The beautiful statue stands tall in the heart of it and reminds you of all the charm this city had and still has today.

Facing each other are two iconic buildings, the old head office of the Bank of Montreal (the present-day head office is in Toronto) and Notre-Dame Basilica (which was, unfortunately, closed for repairs while we were in Montreal). The statue of Paul de Chomedey de Maisonneuve dominates the square. In winter the space is rather bleak and windy; in summer it... More

We visited in winter so fountain wasn't on, but looks like it would be fun in warmer weather. The square sits right in front of Notre Dame church and provides for lots of good picture taking opportunities.

This square is surrounded by wonderful architecture. You can begin a horse and carriage ride here. Notre Dame is right there.

Beautiful place to stop and marvel at historical, French inspired architecture and monuments including a memorial monument to Paul de Chomedey de Maisonneuve, the founder of Montreal. The square is surrounded by the Basilica Notre-Dame, Saint-Sulpice Seminary, the New York Life Building (Montreal's first high rise) and Bank of Montreal. In addition symbolizing the French and British heritage represented in... More

Place d'Armes is one of the oldest public squares in Montreal with at its center the monument in memory of Paul de Chomedey, founder of Montreal. Many iconic buildings surround the place including the Notre-Dame Basilica, Saint-Sulpice Seminary, New York Life Building, the art deco Aldred Building, Bank of Montreal head office and the modern 500 Place d'Armes. Staying in Vieux-Montreal (Old Montreal)

Neighbourhood Profile
Vieux-Montreal (Old Montreal)
The historic centre of Montreal, Vieux-Port is home to some of the city's most antiquated buildings and picturesque streets. Along the waters of the St. Lawrence River, the bank of Old Port features museums, festivals, food stalls, and outdoor athletics, a celebrated part of the city that explodes into fireworks displays on warm summer nights. At its centre, street performers and artists compete with sprawling restaurant terraces for space along Jacques-Cartier Square, while the cobbled streets of Rue St. Paul and Rue Notre-Dame offer a reprieve of quiet galleries and atmospheric wine bars. Horse-drawn carriages are not an uncommon part of traffic, and the narrows they traverse are lined with boutiques, crêperies, and poutine shops enshrined in buildings of stone and wooden lattices. Here you can evoke Montreal's past with a traditional cooking lesson or historical tour, then enjoy its artistic present with live music and theatre.
