This place is extremely peaceful and the views of the city from the church are so beautiful. The landscaping is out of this world. I love coming here in the summer to recenter myself. Say a prayer for myself and my loved ones, then take a walk around the beautiful property. I recommend this place as a must visit.

The Oratory is a very imposing structure when viewed from outside, impressively located on it's piece of hill side. The cavernous inside creates an extraordinary atmosphere. The modern interior might not be to everyone's taste, but I found it a refreshing change from what I'm familiar with in Europe.

What a beautiful dome church! It has a stations of the cross "garden", which was nice. There are lots of stairs and uphill, so wear comfortable shoes!

Inside, this place isn't flashy. Its quite surprisingly big though. Have a look at St-Andre's chapel out to the right side, to see how this humble man lived.

It may not impress less religious people perhaps but we felt deeply moved by the love and care it took to create such wonderful gardens. If you can try to go to a concert or service and just listen to the organ!! Wow!

Came here in the late afternoon with a small picnic to enjoy on the steps. It is easy to reach by metro, even though far from most of the main attractions. After a short walk (good for the heart), you can reach the top of the stairs and are rewarded with stunning views over Montreal, the river, and beyond. Come... More

I visited St. Joseph last year. This place is a peaceful, calm and relaxing place to visit. I was founded Brother Andre in 1904. It is a place of worship, art, music, culture, sculptures and it is also a shrine. It has over 200 nativity scenes from over 100 countries. It is a museum, work of art, and it like... More

Slowly climbing up to the church on a nice day is relaxing. The view on the platform down to the town is beautiful. The church is not so complicated decorated but definitely has its own style. It is quite different from the churches from Europe.

I think it is 202 steps to get in although i later found that there is an elevator and an escalator!! However, being in Montreal I needed to work off some of the calories in this gastronomic capital of Canada. No fee and the views from the top of montreal are amazing as well.

This is a beautiful church and one worth visiting for sure. Its a very good bit of exercise going up the front stairs to the top. Great views and beautiful architecture from all angles. Must stop by and see it up close and personal.

Staying in Parc du Mont-Royal

Neighbourhood Profile
Parc du Mont-Royal
Montreal was named for this hilly highland, where the tallest spot in the city overlooks its most extensive parkland. The greenspace of Parc du Mont-Royal is an outdoorsman's dream, with hiking trails and nature walks that cater to every season and level of athlete. In the winter, cross-country skiers, tobogganers, and ice skaters don their equipment by Beaver Lake and its pavilion, while the warmer months bring families and competitors to the pitches of Jeanne-Mance Park for tennis, soccer, football, baseball, volleyball, or a dip in the community pool. A perfect spot for a stroll or a picnic, the forest foliage is dotted with sculpture art and offers views of some of Mont-Royal's oldest edifices, the towering St. Joseph's Oratory and the mausoleums of Notre-Dame-des-Neiges. Home to musical celebrations and twilight snowshoeing alike, visit here to walk, write, rest, think, or just be.
