About
Pointe-a-Calliere, the birthplace of Montreal and a National Historic Site, offers visitors the opportunity to explore history through an original underground circuit leading through archaeological excavations. At the start of their visit, an immersive multimedia show presents a high-speed view of the city's history, the remains come to life and the count down begins! The museum also offers year-round temporary local and international exhibitions. For Montreal's 375th anniversary in May 2017, Pointe-a-Calliere inaugurated a new pavilion highlighting Fort Ville-Marie.

Excellent - interesting & great value!
Spent close to 3 hours here. Well-presented history and archeological findings of Montreal. Learned a lot! Went mid-week and the museum (luckily) was not crowded. Particularly enjoyed the temporary exhibit about Egypt - Three Millenia on the Nile.

Outstanding history museum, built on the archeological dig
You get to see the site of where they found many of the artifacts. excellent history of the area starting roughly 2-3 thousand years ago. The museum is well laid out, with a sprinkling of very helpful guides.

    Archeological Museum of Montreal’s history.
A large archeological museum with lots of historical artifacts and even part of the original sewer system on display. A great place to learn about Montreal’s history and development over the centuries. There are also special exhibitions which change over time.

    Wander the ruins
Although this museum is thirty years old, it still feels fresh and relevant. The most outstanding feature is the underground galleries featuring ruins from the earliest days of Montreal up to the twentieth century. If you are interested in archaeology, this is a must see!

    Must do for history buffs
Really well done exhibit of ruins below the streets of Montreal. At first it’s a bit confusing to navigate but helpful guides are easily found to guide you. Don’t skip the media presentation with wonderful history of the city in French or English with headphones. Also, take the elevator to the top “Belvedere” level for great lookout viewpoint of the city. This is a must do for history buffs

    Historic Old Montreal... Just fascinating
A very cool museum exploring the historical old city of Montreal. Loved the history and being able to see how the various time periods and construction overlapped. Could be a bit confusing at times to navigate with some back tracking but still a highlight of the trip

    Biggest surprise of the trip
The museum takes you to the underground original ruins of Montreal and how they were found. Bring you from the Native Indians that live in that area to the modern Montreal. You will work thur the excavations of the original city. It have a section for kids to learn about the history of Montreal with games.

    Amazing museum discovery
We had seen this museum on several previous visits and finally made it there on Wednesday (April 17th). What a great destination - extremely interesting and educational without a hint of boredom. The way they have incorporated the remains of previous buildings into the current museum site is awesome. Also the use of technology in the film and in displays like the "Google Earth" tour of 1703 Old Montreal are something I haven't seen before and do a great job of showing the history of the site and the city. This museum definitely qualifies as a "hidden gem" and I think it should be a much higher profile attraction! Plan to spend 3+ hours to really explore and appreciate this museum.. Finally, we had a great lunch experience at the Cafe on the 2nd floor. Amazing views, food and service!

    History of Montreal Underground
We were surprised with this mainly underground way of seeing and learning about the history of Montreal. If you start with the introductory video in the Reception Pavilion lobby then the exit from the theatre will lead you down stairs to the start of the museum. The exhibits were divided across six sections (A through E) and they were well signed, interactive and educational. A was the Reception Pavilion that included the Bistro, souvenir display, balcony views of the surrounding area and Crossroads of Montreal exhibit. B was the First Collector Sewer with ever changing colored lighting that connected us to the Fort Ville Marie (C) exhibits. The Fort Ville Marie was where Montreal first began and you can see the remains of the fort underneath and the various indigenous tribes. D was the Marketplace and mapped out the growth of Montreal over time. E was the Old Custom House exhibit and led to F which was the Mariner's House and contained the temporary exhibit. The temporary exhibit this time was about the Mexican Olmec culture. I enjoyed leaning more as well as seeing the very large stone heads for which they were well known for. We spent almost 2 hours here as there was a lot to see. One of the museum highlights of this trip to Montreal.

    Great experience
Unique beyond words. Have to see it to believe it. Such a wonderful presentation if you like history. From the ruins of building two centuries old, complete with a city sewer system. A mix of visual aids . photos, exhibitions, and recreations. Easy to get around with lifts for mobility challenged. Well worth the admission price. Strongly recommend. Only negative: the 20 minute wait for a server to ask if we were ready to order in the cafe. Skip the cafe and eat somewhere else as the menu was limited as well as pricy (which you would expect.). Nice touch, lockerss to store belongings and only cost 1 CD.

The first and most notable problem is the extremely high cost for what it is, opened at least ten minutes late, long and slow lines to get in when it wasn't at all busy, and every staff I encountered was incredibly unfriendly bordering on hostile. The layout is incredibly confusing and if you don't follow the intended path (how would you even know?) , you actually get yelled at. If you're interested in one part of the museum and not others, you're not permitted to do that. The colorfully lit sewer is bizarre. There's so little of archaeological interest and such a tremendously racist, biased presentation of Indigenous people. Extremely NOT recommended. I'd give no stars if I could. I love Montreal and have visited this jumbled mess several times hoping to get more out of it, but it's just not worth it. Montreal deserves better!

Was there today for the exposition “les Incas,-c’ Le Perou” which, like many of the temporary exhibitions, was excellent. Not to be overlooked though are many of the permanent features of the museum. For example the half hour video about Montreal is great, and leverages the foundation of the original fort of Ville Marie which is one one Western mans first stops on this continent , before the visit is over l’Arriivage restaurant, is one of the best museum restos on the island(although some in my party were a bit shocked to note that the grill cheese sandwich was $16)I would rather pay more at a resto where you can count on everything being made to near perfection

Well maintained and interesting museum. Several layers of history are laid bare for the audience to examine and interpret as they see fit. Interesting to see the foundations of the great city of Montreal. They use a lot of audio-visual explanations as well as artifacts. I enjoyed every aspect of the museum. It takes around 3-4 hours to see all the exhibits (second picture is at the Inca temporary exhibit).

A real disappointment as a third of the areas were closed.
Another one housed an exhibition on Egypt, in which we had zero interest, as we were in Canada!
Of course, they didn’t bother telling us this when we bought our tickets, for which we paid full price - $48 for both of us!
Nor did they tell us that the bistro was closed for no reason.
Off to a good start with the multi-media show but then all a bit dull from then onwards. The market area was interesting but that was about it.
The museum really should think about reducing their prices when they reduce their offer like this.

The museum (assume 2+ hours for a visit) has a mix of old (ancient sewers, foundations and even a cemetery) and new, telling the tale of Montreal. I cannot say anything really stood out, but it was worthwhile nonetheless. Professionally curated. Good toilets. No food. Assume you'll run into lots of schoolchildren.

This is one of the best museums I’ve ever visited. A hidden gem in Old Montreal, the Pointe a Calliere really brings the city’s history and archaeology to life via brilliant multimedia and interactive storytelling amongst the ruins of Ville Marie, the marketplace and other historic sites. I highly recommend starting your visit off with the 17-minute video at the start and then head down to the exhibits with the archaeological remnants. It’s really mind-blowing to be walking on glass on top of what’s left of the first fort from 1642. I also enjoyed sitting outside and admiring Vieux Port and the St. Lawrence during lunch at the bistro. I learned so much during my visit there and already want to return!

The museum is an attractive modern design on the outside, but doesn't have a very practical lay-out and I can't recommend this museum. Stairs every which way, poor signage on how to exit the museum, flow from section to section is awful. What can I say. We were extremely confused and didn't even really like the displays that much.
No explanation of special tours or events that day and it was even hard to figure out where the multimedia movie was going to be shown and it was only about 100 feet from the ticket desk! It's a big wall that slides open, not a door,
Montreal has gone out of its way to not use English which further complicates getting around .Pourquoi? Je ne Comprends pas.

Best place to visit for history lovers. We favourited it on Trip Advisor and reached there on the day first of our active voyage of Montreal.
My sons took keen interest in the place for the following reasons:
1) It explained the historical evolution of Montreal city;
2) The rites and culture of the indigenous was well preserved;
3) The artefacts were displayed with the description.
We visited all the parts and found the place very informative and entertaining.
The timings are great and there was not that rush of the people. The staff was very cooperative and when you come out of the place, you have a lot of places to sit, eat and fun.
Adjacent to old Montreal, it’s a must see.

The Train exhibit is very interesting for everyone. Mind you, it is not really geared for children but still has things of interest for the 8 years old+ (maquettes, Delorian car, H.Potter 9 3/4 station) . The Montreal à l'Italienne is definitively for adults and makes you realise how much this culture is part of the city's history. Plan 1.5 h for the Train exibit and 1 hr for the Montreal à l'Italienne.

interesting visit to the Montreal Archeology Museum ! Who Knew what history lurked beneath the streets !
the city of Montreal has done a terrific job excavating the subterranean nooks and crannies, revealing details of life thru the ages on the geography which is called Montreal. If you have a couple of hours to spare, this is a fascinating museum peeling back, layer by layer, the history of Montreal and the ways and means of life here for the past few hundred years and by extension, back to the neolithic times. ENJOY ! it is a beautifully conceived Museum expertly put together.
