Since you are free to move around in the train and have access to the dome cars if you have a sleeper cabin, direction isn't that important as far as viewing is concerned. The big issue is the schedule - part of the trip... More

I don't know about the tours but yes you can and we did rent a car. There are several rental locations right downtown.
