A masterpiece of beaux-arts architecture, the historic Royal Alexandra is Toronto's senior theatre and, at 101, never having been converted to any other use, the oldest continuously operating legitimate theatre in North America. The Royal Alexandra is also North America's first truly "royal" theatre - "royal" by patent from Edward VII - named with royal permission for his consort, Alexandra, a Danish princess and great-grandmother of the present queen.

The Royal Alexandra Theatre is a really beautiful venue, and the Mirvish group is doing an amazing job finding truly superb theatre to produce. They have single handedly brought Toronto to the forefront of the theatre scene. We went to see Mrs. Henderson Presents yesterday - it was a riot. I highly recommend the musical. From a venue perspective, the... More

Royal Alexandra is the most comfortable and intimate theatre I've been to yet! It has a beautiful interior design with chandeliers and old architecture. You can get an excellent view of the performers from any seat!

I loved "Mrs. Henderson Presents" to the depth of my soul. My Mom was a Windmill Girl and did the nudes, including her infamous "Dance of the Seven Veils" that brought the Lord Chancellor to assure it was tasteful or he'd shut them down. It was referenced in Vivian Van Damm's daughter's book "We Never Closed" about the Windmill Theatre.... More

I was lucky enough to be invited to this theatre whilst visiting Toronto. I'm used to the theatres of London's West End, and I was pleased to find that the Royal Alexandra is gracious, comfortable and welcoming. I had a thoroughly enjoyable evening and found that the current musical, Mrs Henderson Presents offers top quality entertainment, with comedy, pathos, fabulous... More

Fabulous theatre especially great since the latest renovation - only disadvantage is the stairs number of stairs to get to the upper levels - no elevator. But it is a beautiful old building that has great sound and sight lines. Latest show was Mrs. Henderson Presents - best show since Come From Away. I would go to see it again... More

Staying in Downtown West

Neighbourhood Profile
Downtown West
Downtown West is home to Toronto's gorgeous Inner Harbor, and is a must-visit for lovers of art and the outdoors. The area's rich cultural heritage is celebrated by a number of monuments and museums, giving the neighborhood a mature feel. As a premier destination for modern art, people here stroll through the cool contemporary pieces at the Power Plant, enjoy the outdoor installations along Queen's Quay and Canoe Landing, and picnic among the zany designs of the Toronto Music Garden. The waterfront itself is often suffused with bikers and joggers, and the harbor is always packed with classic ships with masts raised. The vintage boats and ferries to the Toronto Islands make for a charming contrast against Downtown West's backdrop of skyscrapers, condos, and food trucks serving up hot, fresh fare to locals on the go. The area has a peaceful energy, and is popular with tourists and Torontonians alike.
