The eight Ottawa locks connect the channel of the Rideau Canal to the Ottawa River.
The eight Ottawa locks, which are the largest single set of locks on the entire Rideau system, connect the channel of the Rideau Canal to the Ottawa River. They are designed to raise and lower boats from one water level to another. They were built, along with a series of dams, to bypass rapids and waterfalls. It takes at least one and a half hours to go through the locks. On one side of the locks are Canada’s Parliament buildings and on the other is the architecturally magnificent building of the Chateau Laurier hotel. Not to be missed!

    Picnic at Long Island Locks
Our cultural group arranged a picnic at the Long Island Locks. Facilities included nice washrooms, a parking lot and picnic tables under mature trees which provided well-needed shade. The area was adjacent to the locks which had boats tied up and others going through the lock system. The big wheels of the locks were operated manually by several men which was interesting to see but we felt sorry for them working in the hot sun.

    Don't underestimate
I must confess I was expecting less of it, but I loved it. Ask for the self-guided audio toor. It's worth. The phones weren't Bose noise cancelling NASA level, quite the opposite, but it worked 100% and I enjoyed

    We love man made canals
We read a lot about Rideau canal. These locks are connecting it to Ottawa river. During our visit they did some work on the site as you can see from my photos. I would love to see it in winter when it freeze and people skating. But when we were on guided bus tour our guide told us that the canal didn't freeze for 2 years!.

    Amazing structure
These are a must see. There are historically very significant and look splendid as they step down into the river. The chambers are all full in the morning but as craft go through some are empty some full. You can walk across the top of the pock gates to get to the other side

The family visited the interpretive center and spent some time walking back and forth across the locks. No boats or ships were going through at the time and relatively low traffic around it at the time. Gorgeous view from the street.

In use since 1832, the “Ottawa Locks” form a vital link and connect the Ottawa River to Rideau Canal. If you wander to the locks adjacent the Fairmont Chateau Laurier, you’ll doubtless observe that they cascade down like a series of “steps.” This unique system, which is still operated by hand today, is designed to raise and lower boats from one level to the next as they navigate this part of the canal. Of course, it’s a slow process; so, one must be patient. It takes about 1.5 hours to clear the 8 locks.

Thus, the Ottawa Locks are much more than a mere historic curiosity. In one respect, they form part of an important center around which the fledgling Ottawa sprung. In the current day, they still serve a practical purpose – it’s just been augmented with a bit of tourism tossed in!

I would’ve rated the Ottawa Locks higher, but they weren’t set up at the time of my visit (if only I’d come here a week later!). Oh well, it was still cool to see the “steps.” It just would’ve been a hundred times better to observe the boats and locks in action!

Fascinating to view the locks even on a cold April Day. The paths down by the locks were closed for the season but we got a good view of them from the bridge above and along the hillside walk beside it. The whole area around here is lovely to wander in and on the way from downtown to ByWard Market.

The functioning of Ottawa Locks is very interesting and one needs to walk alongside and over the locks to get a better perception of the same. Certainly would very highly recommend visiting the same to any tourist in Ottawa.

The Rideau River splits into two branches, the main branch resulting in a waterfall into the Ottawa River, the other branch resulting into a controlled fall into the Ottawa River by a series of locks. The latter branch is adjacent to the Chateau Laurier Hotel. It's interesting to watch the locks function and raise or lower a boat to the next level.
