From the outside the museum looks small and unassuming. However, once inside there is a potted history of Ottawa from its very origin to how it has evolved into the city it is today. For someone who is on their first visit to Canada this was a highly interesting visit and a very well laid out journey

Down by the locks on the canal, this little museum tells the story of the area's development and has some very nice exhibits. You can sit outside and drink freshly squeezed lemonade which is very pleasant.

It is the history of Ottawa city at its beginnings. It is small but the information contain in it and all the exhibits makes it a good touristic destination. If you want to learn about the Bytown and the early history of Ottawa you should pay a visit.

This nice little museum offers a lot of information about Ottawa history. There is also a lot of artefacts to see and reasonable coffee and souvenirs to buy. I would recommend this place for people curious about the city history

It's a small museum. On the second floor it has a great history of Ottawa, not just the building of the canal, which is a superb story. Also the early history of ByTown and its Lumberjack roots. This is a good museum to keep in mind if you are waiting to do your Parliament House tour, as it's right next... More

You have to go looking for it, as its by the locks. Just two small floors, but packed with information about Ottawa's history. At the time, there was an exhibit about the fire on Parliament Hill in 1916.

Bytown Museum Anyone that misses this – misses an important part of Ottawa’s history – and the oldest building in the city! This museum is excellent, well curated, educational, informative and very interactive. I was very pleased with the visit. The staff are very helpful and made us feel like we were very welcome. Tucked away by the locks, this small museum in the oldest building in Ottawa is a must do! The audio tour is a delight and kept our family of four (kids aged 8&10) entertained for the entire hour... And the headline cards will be perfect for school reports. Affordable, memorable, and great staff. If you like quiet museums packed with... More

The Bytown Museum was situated in an attractive stone building located on the lower locks of the Rideau Canal at the Ottawa River just below Parliament Hill. The setting was lovely. But, the main part of the museum (upstairs) was closed to the public due to renos in preparation for 150 years of Canada celebrations coming up in 2017. So,... More
