ESTABLISHED by Lt-Col. John By in 1826, the ByWard Market is one of Canada's oldest and largest public markets. The legendary builder of the Rideau Canal, Colonel By himself laid out the street plan of the Market, designating George Street and York Street to be extra wide to accommodate the creation of a public market and gathering place.

WITHIN an area roughly four blocks square, you'll find museums, cafes, specialty food shops, boutiques, galleries, restaurants, pubs, hair & aesthetics salons and more! Easily accessible on foot, by transit or by car, the ByWard Market offers a unique experience for all.

Great place for a night on the town

Something for everyone here in the market, bars, restaurants and shops. You can spend an afternoon and evening downtown, skate nearby on the canal and then have some dinner!

First visit, very busy but lots of shops to explore. Endless opportunities for stopping for a quick beverage or a leisurely lunch / dinner. We purchased cheeses from the International cheese shop. Lots of choices and varieties. A great way to spend an afternoon!!

The ByWard Market area was a fascinating area packed with restaurants, bars and shops. It was -8 degrees celsius when we were walking around, so we didn't see everything in the area, but it was a great place to walk around, even if it was freezing cold. We tried out several pubs and bars. Would love to have had more... More

We've stopped in here a number of times in the past - whenever we are in Ottawa it's always on our list of things to do. A great variety of restaurants / bars / pubs and a close walk to many attractions, rideau canal, etc.

I have been to many markets in Montreal but none compare to The Byward. Lots of vendors....+ the flowers at the beginning of the season are amazing !

The title says it all. Parking is a challenge, and to avoid stress recommend paying a little extra to park in one of the indoor lots. Especially in the winter, when snow takes away from already limited road space. A good place for a family, including kids, though weekend nights need to watch for the clubbing crowd.
