ESTABLISHED by Lt-Col. John By in 1826, the ByWard Market is one of Canada's oldest and largest public markets. The legendary builder of the Rideau Canal, Colonel By himself laid out the street plan of the Market, designating George Street and York Street to be extra wide to accommodate the creation of a public market and gathering place.

WITHIN an area roughly four blocks square, you'll find museums, cafes, specialty food shops, boutiques, galleries, restaurants, pubs, hair & aesthetics salons and more! Easily accessible on foot, by transit or by car, the ByWard Market offers a unique experience for all.

Before returning to Japan if course we needed to buy souvenirs and the best place in Ottawa is the Byward Market. The people are friendly and helpful, you can find many great and interesting things, and it's all in a wonderful part of the city. Bought ice wine, maple syrup, maple tea, and after had a beaver tail!

It is a good place to have a lunch or dinner at, but there is nothing special or specifically Canadian about it.

I visited Ottawa at Christmas time, from Vancouver, and took a walk through the ByWard Market. It was a beautiful night for a stroll, and the air was festive. The restaurants looked engaging and the bar scene was happening. I would love to return in the summer and take a couple of days to visit the shop and market vendors.

The ByWard Market is should a great spot for last minute grabs! You can eat and shop and find some hidden treasures. Dont forget to visit the cheese store and say "Carla says Hi!"

The ByWard market is amazing during the summer time. I would recommend it for all ages. Great places to go eat. Have a couple drinks on the patio, and always good entertainment. If you are in Ottawa I recommend. Shopping is good, just be prepared for the price tag.

I had 6 hours between flights so my friend met me at the airport and took me to the Byward Market. Went for a quick meal at a local restaurant (lots of great places to choose from!!) Then we just walked around the area checking shops and local vendors and some fantastic looking eateries that I would like to try.... More

As a former resident of Ottawa, it has been almost 15 years since I last frequented this area. At the time, I was as a student, worry free and whose greatest concern was what bar were we going to go to next to grab a drink at next. During my triumphant return, my circumstances had changed quite significantly - I'm... More
