ESTABLISHED by Lt-Col. John By in 1826, the ByWard Market is one of Canada's oldest and largest public markets. The legendary builder of the Rideau Canal, Colonel By himself laid out the street plan of the Market, designating George Street and York Street to be extra wide to accommodate the creation of a public market and gathering place.

WITHIN an area roughly four blocks square, you'll find museums, cafes, specialty food shops, boutiques, galleries, restaurants, pubs, hair & aesthetics salons and more! Easily accessible on foot, by transit or by car, the ByWard Market offers a unique experience for all.

Must return in the summer to give this a fair chance. I hear there are farmers at the market then. When I was just there a mega construction project made it very noisy, the stalls were touristy, and the food stalls were unappealing. The highlight was The Beavertails stall just outside the market. That was authentic and delicious.

I can remember when you could still buy live chickens and rabbits at Ottawa's centre town market. That's all gone now of course. Although you can still find a few fruit and vegetable stalls on one side street the original market building has been over taken by coffee bars and fast food restaurants. Most of the greater market area is... More

So much fun to stroll up and down the market streets. So many vendors, selling everything from Maple syrup (which had great prices), T-Shirts, Lovely fruits and vegetables, jewelry, and other handmade trinkets. The streets are very clean and the people are extremely friendly. Prices are good. Support your local farmers and shop at the ByWard Market.

My wife and myself spent a wonderful sunny September morning browsing though the shops and vegetable stalls of Byward Market. It is an Ottawa landmark which any visitor to Ottawa should put on their must visit and taste list. There were numerous colourful displays of seasonal produce from local farms plus many food kiosks and restaurants serving up flavourful and... More

Great variety of shops and eateries. Open late. Lots of extras going on. Tucker's buffet was great. Be sure to get a beaver tail.

Fun exciting place to walk around. Lots of restaurants to chose from and sights to see. Shopping mall close by also. Everything is within walking distance which was great as we stayed in a hotel right on the byword market! Must see!!

ByWard market is a showpiece of Canadian Diversity. You can find all sorts of items here. I love to buy fresh produce that comes from nearby farms. The market is very popular with visitors and also locals. Once you are there several other Ottawa attractions are within walking distance.
