- TennisStar602New Jersey713 contributionsI made a last-minute stop at this cemetery.Just before I left Nova Scotia, I wanted to pay my respect to the victims of the Titanic and to the 1917 Great Disaster. It was free to enter this cemetery, but this cemetery was only open for very random hours. It would be wise to check these hours of operation prior to any entry. It was quiet on a Monday morning. I was able to follow the signs to the locations that I wanted to visit, and I just parked my car as I viewed the graves.Visited November 2023Travelled soloWritten 22 November 2023
- JoanneLake Mary, Florida2,116 contributionswonderful piece of historyThis was always on my bucket list, and I am so glad I was able to get on a group tour from our cruise ship. We had a guide who told some great (and sad) stories about the various people who lost their lives. I enjoyed hearing about how they identified the youngest victim from DNA. It was also interesting learning there was a J. Dawson (not Jack though). You don't need much time, but its definitely worth seeing a piece of history. Well-maintained.Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 29 April 2024
- David APreston, United Kingdom524 contributionsMost movingHard to write a review about this cemetery. I’ve been around Halifax before but this was my first visit to the cemetery. It was very moving, especially when you know the history of the Titanic. The most moving part for me were the headstones with no name. Also it’s worth looking around the rest of the cemetery. Of note were the gravestones of those killed by the great fire in 1917 from the greatest human made explosion of the time caused by 2 vessels colliding in the harbour.Visited August 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 15 August 2024

After arriving in Halifax, NS, we found a taxi driver named Terry. We ask if he could take us to the “titanic cemetery.” He was very gracious and said he would take us there and back for a certain amount. He said if he dropped us off we wouldn’t be able to get a ride back as taxi’s don’t hang out at the site. After arriving, he was very knowledgeable about the graves and told us the number on each headstone was the order each person was pulled out of the water. Some stones still don’t have names and according to Terry they are still trying to be identified. This was the highlight of my trip. Halifax taxi drivers know their stuff and it was a memorable day.

We were a group of 16 on a tour bus and spent about 45 minutes here. Our tour guide had told us that some of the Titanic victims had never been identified so did not have a name on their headstone, but had a number that corresponds with the order that they were removed from the water. Beautiful old trees and walkways. This was really a highlight of the trip. So glad we got here.

Not really into cemeteries, but this one was worth the visit. We had a great tour guide that did her research and she was full of stories about several of the Titanic victims that were buried here. We spent maybe 45-minutes here and it was worth the time and experience. One thing we liked was the many stories our tour guide told us that James Cameron incorporated into his version of the Titanic movie. We're really glad this was part of our tour of the area.

Moving to see and remember. Grave area is shaped like the bow of the ship. There are some unique and very moving stories about some of the deceased. Glad we went, but I would not plan a day around it. You can get a feel for it respectfully in about an hour.

This cemetery contains a number of victims of the 1912 Titanic disaster. We went with a local expert who had a lot of information on the victims and the Titanic itself. If you simply attend by yourself, I'm not sure you would be impressed. If you are there on a tour, I believe you will feel it was worth the time.

This is the final resting place of a number of Titanic victims. There are plaques explaining the Halifax involement with the tragedy and the history of the Titanic gravesites. The location is beautiful but somber. Many of the graves are simply marked with a number (the order in which the bodies were found) and no name. Most notable of the graves are the unidentified babe (who has since been identified) who was "adopted" by the rescue squad and for whom they then held a large funeral. There is also the grave of a Mr. J. Dawson. This person is not that basis for Jack Dawson in the film; however, his grave has been a popular visiting place for teenage girls.

Having started a transatlantic cruise in the UK, and stopped at Belfast to visit the Titanic museum, it was only fitting to visit the final resting places of many victims of the tragedy in Halifax. Cruise excursions are always a rip-off. This visit we did on our own. Here's how you can do it for less than Can$5 each. Get the No.29 bus heading east from the main road 300yds from the cruise terminal. Pay the driver the Can$2.75 ticket (one way), and ask to get off at Fairview Lawn Cemetery. KEEP YOUR GREEN BUS TICKET, as long as your visit to the Cemetery is only for an hour or two, the bus ticket is valid for your return journey on the next 29 bus heading back towards the cruise terminal. The return bus stop is up the road on the opposite side 150yds.

Is there public transportation to the cemetery from downtown?
Written 1 February 2020
Hi LauraJean, the answer to your question regarding public transport to Fairview Lawn Cemetery from Downtown Halifax is a definite YES. At any of the bus stops showing the No.29 route eastbound. We got the No.29 on the Main Road near the tourist information office. Pay the driver C$2.75 and ask to be dropped off at the gates of the cemetery. Keep hold of your green bus ticket, (as long as your visit to the cemetery and surrounding area is no longer than 2 hours), your green ticket stub is then still valid for your return journey to the centre of town. By the way, the bus stop for the return journey is about 200yds on the other side of the same road where you got dropped off, just up the hill. Very easy and much cheaper than other forms of transport. Good luck.

How long did you spend at the Titanic Graves? I'm trying to plan an excursion for my mom and I to include Fairview Lawn Cemetery and Mount Olivet.

We will be visiting there in October 2018. I saw quite a few people posted last October and I wondered how the weather
was during that time of year. Not quite sure how to pack for Nova Scotia in October - we're from Georgia. Thanks!!

We took a Fall Cruise from Boston to Halifax during October but it was a few years ago. The weather was nice the entire time (mid 60s). Just had to wear a light jacket. I hope you are as lucky!

Any recommendations for a private tour providing transportation to and from cruise ship dock ?
Written 3 April 2018
We have actually been there twice. Once, we walked off the ship and hired a limo for the day with another couple. It worked out very well. The second time, we rented a car and just walked to the car rental office which was located near the mall, about 15 minute walk, but uphill. You will need a car or some sort of transportation to get to the cemetery.

I see on the site it says NOT wheelchair accessible. How about someone walking with a cane? In general will they be able to traverse the landscape to get to the Titanic portion of the cemetery, is it close to the roadway?
Written 31 December 2016
Fairview Cemetery is a long walk from Halifax's downtown but it is on a bus route - the excellent tourist information centre will be able to help you with that. If you are walking with a cane you shouldn't have too much difficulty once you reach the cemetery. The Titanic graves are clearly signposted from the main entrance and they are a short walk along a tarmaced road and off to your right. When I visited 2 elderly ladies were there as well and one of them walked with a cane. She was able to walk around the grave stones without difficulty.

Which sections of the cemetery have the Titanic and Halifax Explosion graves?
Written 6 September 2016
There are signs to follow to the Titanic section, easy to find and park. Not sure about the explosion?

Arriving by cruise ship in September. Could someone tell me how far this is from the port? Are there buses that bus people to/from? Thank you in advance.
Written 4 June 2016
thaward gave an excellent answer above. You will want a reputable tour guide to give you all kinds of insights that you might not receiver visiting by yourself by taxi. City transit / bus would not be an efficient use of your time. Molega Tours includes the Titanic section of Fairview Lawn cemetery in their Peggy's Cove - Halifax City Tour. I highly recommend Molega Tours which you can easily find by Google.

Can someone tell me what the hours are for this cemetery please?
Written 21 April 2016
Hi,
I would assume it is open every day during daylight hours. I drive past it daily and there are sections that do not have a fence. The cemetery is 3720 Windsor Street, you can't park on Windsor, however, you can park on Connaught Avenue.
If you search on the Fairview Lawn Cemetery, there is a site plan where you'll see the layout. There is one road through the centre that is called main avenue, the top of main avenue is where the Titanic graves are.

My niece and I will be there in august 2015 on carnival cruise. What is the easiest and fastest way to get there.
Written 6 June 2015
Hi, we stayed at the Homewood suites in downtown and also had a car rental so just used our gps to get there, so can't really answer your question but perhaps if you contact the Halifax tourism they were most helpful and would suggest the best alternative.
We definitely recommend taking the time to visit if you can
