About
The Jost House is the oldest house in Sydney Nova Scotia, built in 1786. We are open June 1st to October 29th and/or all cruise ship days. During your visit, a guide will give you a personal tour of our 1786 kitchen and the ground floor of the museum. The basement has been restored to the original 18th century kitchen. On the ground floor we have many historical Victorian artifacts in our bedroom, parlour, dining room and store. The upstairs portion of the house, added in 1910, has four different exhibit rooms to browse around in at your leisure. Our Hours in September and October are 10-4 Monday to Saturday but vary on cruise ship days. We are open on Sundays if a cruise ship is in port.

Great historical overview
Aug. 2021
Oldest house in Sydney that dates back to the 18th century. This small museum is packed with history and information about the area. Staff are on hand in period costume to take you on a narrative tour of the building. Well worth the visit.

Great experience

This is one of the oldest remaining wooden buildings in Colonial Sydney. The building has various displays reflecting its development from 1786 (owned by Samuel Sparrow) through to Victorian times (owned by Thomas Jost). This really shows the colonial atmosphere of the town and is well worth a visit. The guides bring the museum to life, with many tales.

Sydney's Oldest Original Wooden Building
Oct. 2019
There is a small entrance fee. This building has been lovingly restored and features from several centuries including models of ships. Due to the size of the building there are not that many exhibits.

Nice small Museum

There wasn't a whole lot to see compared to large museums, but what was there was very significant to the history of the area. The cost was very minimal.

Mini-Museums
Oct. 2019
The basement and first floor of the house show living conditions in the 1700s and 1800s. The guide provided interesting background on the various uses of the house throughout the years. The second floor has several mini-museums, rooms which talk about seafaring, pharmacy, and the like. The house is a little bit of everything, but doesn't provide a real focus.

Small Museum in Town

Small, but informative and interesting visit. A trip back into the past showing how the early settlers in Sydney lived.

Sweet little museum
Oct. 2019
Went to this museum on a very rainy October day. Well worth a visit. It's just a small 'museum', recreating a house as it was in the past. There are guides on hand to explain everything, which is great. Only a few dollars to visit, so won't break the bank. I will remember this for some time to come.

This home has an amazing history!
Oct. 2019
We arrived after just a short walk on a rainy Saturday morning. As we entered to a friendly welcom and a short review of the homes history. It has three levels. The basement had a young lady who talked about the home, it's additions over the years, and explained a bit about the kitchen. She was very entertaining. We did a self tour on the top two floors. We saw the "women's parlor", the Joist family history room, the Marine room (some interesting tales of the sea and several model ships) plus other on the two top floors. They do have a restroom. A real deal for 3$
