- RobertMJThompsonVictoria, Canada787 contributionsA place of peaceThis is the first place I bring my guests when they stay with me in Victoria. It's a great location for a picnic, a stroll amongst a variety of mature trees and beautifully maintained gardens, a silent meditation beside tranquil ponds, stream side or fountains. The rare Garry Oak can be found here, there are concerts at the small stage, birdlife aplenty and a petting zoo nearby. Free parking is available and a small splash area for kids.Visited September 2023Written 22 September 2023

- Lauren SFareham, United Kingdom19 contributionsPeace and tranquilityBeautiful and well maintained gardens, water areas and trails. It was very wet when we went, so we stayed on the main paths, but there are many trail options. Stunning trees, floral displays and fauna all over. Such a peaceful and relaxing oasis in Victoria.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 3 October 2023

It’s a great place to walk about and also encounter peacocks, ducks, owls and lots of squirrels. Spring time is beautiful with all of the flowers and trees blossoming. You can connect to the beach and walk and explore for some time if you want.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 April 2024
- RobertMJThompsonVictoria, Canada787 contributionsSo much here (and a totem pole too!)Every time I go to this park I've forgotten how multifaceted it is: there are playground areas, ponds with wildlife, trees with wildlife, a petting zoo, a putting green, cricket field etc. Lots of room for parking, lots of places to stroll or sit or hang about. Bring a book, a picnic and spend the entire day here in this place designed for people's pleasure in a natural setting. And it's free!!!Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 June 2024
- Kalia Z72 contributionsGood parkVery nice park, a lot to see. A very close walk from downtown on the opposite side the water is there so you can keep your walk going by continuing to walk along the water. The petting zoo is also very fun, but can get busy in the summer.Visited July 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 13 July 2024
- eMBark TravelersWashington30 contributionsGreat Place To Spend A MorningWe love a good garden walk and this was one of our favorites. We arrived fairly early in the morning and were able to watch the daily “running of the goats” at the Children’s Farm from just outside the fence. After that, we started our journey through the park from the south end and got to see a lot of free roaming peacocks, geese, and ducks. We even saw the elusive blue herons and “the” bald eagle. Huge variety of flowers, shrubs, and trees, plus the gigantic rhododendrons. As we made our way along the paths, we stopped to enjoy all the statues, sculptures, water features, and pond areas. It’s a great place to spend the morning or have an afternoon picnic.Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 7 August 2024

I used to really love this park. Now it is occupied by tenters from all over the Province. Who knows? Perhaps from all over the Country? I really don’t understand the lack of enforcement on bylaws but somehow we’ve come to permit unauthorized occupation. The one time we moved or requested the tenters to move was to protect sensitive areas. That is a sad reality. Move to another part of the park because of the damage they are causing to the environment. Well, they are violating “no overnight” stays. Taxpayers must be getting frustrated by lack of disciplined leadership.

Be careful if you visit this park. The City of Victoria is allowing the homeless to camp in the park and that brings open drug use. If you have kids watch them closely and anything they pick up. Until the park is cleaned of syringes and other drug paraphernalia I do not recommend it for families.

Proceed with caution. This beautiful park is now infested with squatters after city council permitted permanent homeless camps to be set up during Covid-19. The open invitation has attracted the rough sort from far and wide, who are careless of the rare and endangered flora and fauna and a threat to park goers.

What was once the "jewel of Victoria" has been taken oven by over 200 homeless tents and their occupants.
It seems the city and mayor of Victoria are no longer concerned that this major tourist attraction in the absolute heart off this city should be maintained for the benefit of all.
Security is an issue and open drug use and garbage are of concern.

I visited Beacon Hill Park over the weekend. I witnessed a man brandish a knife and threaten a man and his family by the children's playground. As a matter of public safety, please consider this review as a travel advisory to not visit this park, and the city, until the addicts and homeless are better managed.

Overnight camping is now banned from the park and council meets today to ban day camping as well for the next two years. Work is being done now to repair the damage and the park is getting back to it's former self. Hopefully this is a learning experience for the mayor and her council. Come and enjoy this beautiful park again and especially all the animals in the petting zoo.

Beacon Hill park wasn't on our 'to do' list, but our hotel wasn't far away and we wanted a relaxing morning so decided to take a look. We are so glad we did! A beautiful place, almost like an arboretum with peacocks strolling around, squirrels scuttling about and baby ducklings on the pond. Lovely fountains and lakes bursting with water lilies, a real feast for the senses. Great play areas if you have young children and there is a petting zoo which we didn't visit but it seemed very popular.
A nice place to 'get lost' in - a few more large maps showing where you are would have been helpful, but we think we saw most of the park. A lovely place to spend a couple of hours.

Disgusting with all the shameless "tenters" I would be thrown out on my butt if I tried to set up a tent where ever I wanted. City need to grow a back bone and clean up the park. Wait maybe no time with council members travelling during a recommended travel restrictions......"WHAT???.........Too bad City of Victoria is letting a gem be consumed and ruined by a few people and the city stands by and watches it deteriorate. Do not come to the park and walk though it. You get harrassed etc. NOT a nice place to go anymore - sad to see it so bad as I grew up in Victoria. Clean up the park City of Victoria!!!!!!

Butchart gardens is beautiful as always. Beautiful gardens and amazing flowers abound. The petting zoo is closed of course with COVID, the park was quite due to this which IMO is a good thing. The only negative as we strolled through the park with family is the tents place in between the trees, its quite interesting to see they have allowed this during covid wheras normally there would be no such thing allowed. Be prepared to stay on the main paths to avoid most tents (although some were even in fields).

This was once such a stunning place and now it's turned into housing for drug dealers and drug users. When did all this drug use become legal? Why are we doing SO MUCH for those who go out of their way to ruin society?? This place is disgusting and drug dealers need to be thrown in jail plain and simple. Do not take your kids here! All our city cares about is taking tax dollars. Lets all work harder so that druggies have a safe place to stay.

The sites are confusing. I am reading yes and no to my simple question: can I park my car overnight in the south-west part of Beacon Hill Park?

There is a little corner store near Beacon Hill Park that sells bird seed for feeding the peacocks, etc. What is the name and location of it?

There are personalized Plaques on Benches throughout the park. How many years are they on the Benches, before they are Renewed?

We’re planning visit Victoria on May 12 and 13, I’m wondering what can I expect to see beacon hill park on that time? Is there still lots of spring flower?
Written 31 January 2020
Yes, but please use caution right now as there are over 200 homeless people camping in beacon Hill Park. Be careful as there are drugs, used needles, lots of garbage and people have been threatened.

Hi
Sorry about the delay in replying. Victoria Parks regulations state that there must be no fires other than in designated fire pits. I am not aware of any fire pits in Beacon Hill Park. The best idea, if not too late, is to email them directly and ask the question
Their main web site has an email facility.

Best location for a picnic at Beacon Hill Park?
Written 25 May 2018
There is a great spot for a picnic on the Southeast side of Beacon Hill Park near the big flag poles, facing the ocean. Great views!! If you’re coming from downtown, stay on Douglas Street until you get to Dallas Road, then turn left. Look for parking on Dallas Road near Cook Street or on Cook Street if necessary. On the left side of Cook Street is the World’s tallest totem pole and Cherry Tree Grove, the flag poles are before that also on Dallas Road but closer to Douglas Street. Either location is excellent for a picnic in Beacon Hill Park!
