Neighbourhood: Yaletown & False Creek North
Yaletown has risen from the ashes of its rough-and-tumble industrial past into one of Vancouver's new chicest neighbourhoods. The place responsible for originating of the phrase 'skid row' might not call to mind independently-owned boutiques and terraced cafes, but having swallowed the waterfront lines of False Creek North, the resulting amalgamation transformed the area into an elegant, stylish hotspot with a view. Its youthful vibe owes to the many young families and young professionals who live there, bolstering nightlife and restaurant variety along its cobbled streets. It is the flagship neighbourhood for modern revitalization, and the It-Spot for boutique hotels and modish eats.

Established in 1995, and named after BC’s 25th Lieutenant Governor, David Lam Park is a 4.34ha multi-use space located in Vancouver’s Yaletown. Surrounded by luxurious condos and warehouses converted to trendy restaurants on the one side, and pristine False Creek on the other, David Lam Park kind of sticks out; you know, a greenspace betwixt and between a glass and concrete jungle. Indeed, it is perhaps because of this that the park is relatively popular. We all need an escape from the “every day,” especially during a pandemic, and David Lam certainly provides this: With 2 basketball courts, a playground, soccer field and access to the Seawall, there’s plenty to do here. Even during a cool (but sunny) winter afternoon, my partner and I spied an informal kid’s soccer game going on. A bit later, in early Spring, I was able to enjoy the blooming cherry blossoms in the park.
As a tourist attraction, I don’t think David Lam Park is a destination in itself per se; however, it can be a fun point of interest as part of a cruise on the False Creek Aquabus (see my earlier review on this site), or a nice rest stop along the Seawall. Enjoy!

This is a wonderful place to take in a great 360 view of Vancouver, on one side is the glass towers of downtown Yaletown towering over the peaceful greenery and wonderful blossoms of David Lam Park. On the other side is the beautiful False Creek, where you can take in energetic rowers on the water and runners and cyclists on the board walks. We walked from the Plaza of Nations to the Granville Island crossing and loved the tranquillity and scenery.

Situated between Coopers' Park to the east, and George Wainborn Park to the west; and connected by the seawall walkway, this is a great place to take a break from one's journey. One of the few places along the route with washrooms.

The visit to the Park was memorable .We watched the rise of the Super Moon on a lovely, cold day. Its been a year now but the experience remains vivid in my mind. Apart from the terrific views of False Creek and Yaletown, the park is well -maintained. The spectacle of the moon ,which looked larger than usual, was captured in video by my son-in-law. The moon looked a little reddish at one point. i am sharing the clip taken from the park.

Enjoyed the Cherry Blossoms Festival 2024….a line of lanterns dotting the curved pathway along the so many cherry trees….colorful wishing papers dangling in the wind as the cherry trees shed the lovely pink petals…sitting under the cherry trees and watch the rainbow mini ferries back and forth along False Creek…had a wonderful time there but quite crowded because it was a Sunday….try weekdays if possible.

If you are walking/hiking/biking the seawall in this part of Vancouver, you probably want to plan for rest breaks. This is a great place to do just that. While it has been about a year since I've been this way, it still seems a natural to stop here, catch my breath, and enjoy the views before continuing west.

This is a nice scenic park on the water. We walked through here on our way to Granville Island. There are clean bathroom facilities in the park.

While walking along the False Creek Greenway I stumbled upon this park. It’s waterfront location is quite picturesque. The modern hi-rise buildings surrounding it are most impressive. There is a large, green lawn which is exceptionally maintained. Tennis courts and basketball courts can also be found here. Several walking paths are lined with benches and trees offering beautiful spots to sit and relax. Not far from Yaletown-Roundhouse Station.

The mystery of the weird mosquito-in-the-water or bird-on-the-prowl or pen-dipping-into-the-inkwell has finally been solved: the water sculpture is named "Brush with Illumination (by Buster Simpson, no relation to Bart or Homer, I am sure). To me, it still looks like a menacing mosquito.
Erected in 1998, it is not just another pretty face (?) by a long shot. This lovely is a technological masterpiece, collecting data and transmitting it hourly. It moves, rotates, rocks. and responds to the tide, wind, and waves. And relays that info back to command central. The data can be accessed as it streams data to a website.
So now we know. It is a cross between sculpture and technology. Pretty sweet.
But there's more. Nearby, a huge round overhead band with inspirational words rings a small seating area pavilion. And then there are the slabs with info on the history of the area and how bachelors were housed here while they worked on the infrastructure.
A favorite of ours was a family trying to pose a rowdy bunch of canines for a group-sort of photo. Lots of luck with that: herding cats comes to mind. But they were able to round up and establish some degree of control over most of the members of the "pack." We gave up after awhile. It looked to be an exercise in futility.
This is a pretty good sized park, it has some play equipment, and was our turn-around point to head back to the Aquabus stop #6 for our ferry back to the Public Market.

We went to the Vancouver International Jazz Festival at David Lam Park. What a great gathering place for people from all over the region.
