- Chris DNew Westminster, Canada3,366 contributionsWhat a GREAT Way To get Around the City and Suburbs! While mainly for commuters to get to and from downtown, tourists should also consider rapid transit as a way to get around. If you are in a downtown hotel, it would be a pity to miss some of the sights because you don't wish to drive in a city where just about every main road appears to be under construction. Clean, fast, timely; especially compared to some of the cities I've visited over the years. I hope you find my photos useful in confirming my comments.Visited July 2024Travelled soloWritten 19 July 2024
- Hawaiian CanuckVancouver, Canada2,079 contributionsFantastic system, but needs to expand beyond EXPO Line.Want to fly over most of the length of Metro Vancouver for less than 5 Bucks? Take SKYTRAIN and it’s elevated lines (80% of its existing routes). The rapid transit system is a great way to get around and also to view many parts of the multiple cities that make up the region. The trains are frequent, clean and well-used by locals. Get on at Waterfront and take the train all the way to Surrey Central. You will fly above the traffic on elevated tracks and will get to see so many parts of Vancouver, Burnaby, new Westminster and Surrey..Visited August 2024Travelled soloWritten 14 August 2024
- Roy H14 contributionsPost cruise trip to the airportEnded an Alaska cruise at Canada Palace. Caught the train at the Waterfront Train Station. Upon exiting your ship, turn left and follow the street onto Howe Street. DO NOT go into the first train station you see. That is the wrong train line. Walk further, turn left on Cordova Street, and look for a black canopy. That will be the entrance to the Canada Line train station. Get on the YVR train and about 30 minutes later you are at the airport. Total cost under $4 U.S. per person. Use a chipped credit card (a different card for each traveler) to bypass the ticket machine and just tap in and out. We had 3 suitcases and there was no problem taking them on the train. We even saw bicycles being brought on the train. A fast, and the most inexpensive (by far) way, to the airport.Visited September 2024Travelled with familyWritten 24 September 2024
- 20bothwellUnited Kingdom148 contributionsshould have been easier but it worked all ok on the daywe stayed at the fairmont airport hotel and had a day to spend in vancouver , we caught the skytrain in, there is a few things to know, the time of day you travel affect the price an you cannot buy a return ticket through the machines so you end up paying more to get to vancouver and then have to buy another ticket to return, we found out the hard way. A lady at the car rental said you can buy a pass for the skytrain from the 7/11 stores but that depends on finding one at the time you need to. for an english speaking western country we were disapointed in the lack of transparency in costs and options, it was clean and ontime and busy but an efficient way to bet to vancouverVisited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 November 2024

I travelled to Vancouver for a week to attend a conference at the Convention Centre. I could not afford the $350+ / night prices for a hotel in downtown so ended up finding accomodation in Burnaby, close to the expo line....OMG!!! as somebody who is familisr with commuting in Sydney, the Translink network in vancouver is infallible! A train came every 3 minutes to anywhere and I maybe waited maximum of 15 minutes for connecting buses to finish my jounrey. The price is ridiculously cheap as well.

This is a fantastic public transit system. It is a very well connected system for nearly all of Metro Vancouver. The train service is frequent and on time. Their maps are straightforward and very easy to navigate. The Compass Card has very affordable pricing and it costs less than $200 for a couple to travel frequently throughout the city.

Coming from Vancouver Island, I was amazed right from the first time I took a ride on the SkyTrain, and I have to say that it is a crown jewel of Vancouver's transportation system. I stayed in town last weekend, and getting from Richmond to Vancouver City Centre in 15-20 minutes was so convenient, and the cars were clean and super fast. $3 gives you 90 minutes within a fare zone, or spend $10 for a day pass across all the zones. An absolute breeze whether you want to avoid traffic while travelling, or just get home after enjoying some drinks while having a night in the city.

During a 4 day stay in Vancouver we used the SkyTrain to go to and from YVR, and to Burnaby. The system is easy to navigate as it is well-signed and train stations are announced in advance. We also transferred to and from buses and with the Compass card, all trips (except the one from YVR) cost $2.40.

When I need to go downtown, I use Skytrain; and encourage others to do so as well. Close friends who are not that familiar with the system were enticed to use it, and here are some of the issues they had to deal with.
Where to park? Coming in from the eastern suburbs, where bus service is limited and sometimes inconsistent, the car is a necessity. But, where is the "Park n Ride" that many cities have? They ended up taking a large detour to park at my place.
How to get a ticket? Lots of questions to answer before getting a ticket. Can this not be simplified? How many zones? Signs for "add-fare" could be clearer, as people are by now in a mild panic as they think they'll never get out of the system.
Yes, you have probably recognized by now the friend/relative who "doesn't need your help, can figure it out". I don't know the answers to these issues, but hopefully high-paid senior management can give this some thought before the tourists return this summer.

Vancouver has a lot to offer, especially for nature lovers. You can get almost anywhere by bus and the Sky Train can even take you to remote areas. I was most impressed by the nature, e.g. Lynn Valley and the Capillano Bridge. Even spontaneously in the afternoon, it was possible to take the 257 express bus to Horseshoe Bay and from there take the ferry to Vancouver Island. In the city, I found the parks and the Steam Clock particularly beautiful.
Ps: if you want to keep your vacation spirits to a minimum, you should avoid Chinatown. We got lost on Main Street, where you see a lot of young people who have fallen outside the social grid. That's pretty bad.

For less than $2, take the Skytrain to University. It will show you the Expo Centre and its buildings, many suburbs, it will travel along side the Fraser river with its tree-logging plants and give a tremendous appreciation of what a great city Vancouver is. The new trains are driverless, so you can sit right up front. Cameras at the ready. Highly recommended. Enjoy.

I was going to use Uber, I had used them on my Arrival & the rate was $28 from YVR to Canada Place Way, Downtown. Today a Sunday morning the rate was $58 for the same trip, downtown to the Vancouver Airport. The SkyTrain Canada Line one way trip was $3, from the Waterfront downtown Station directly to the Airport. The train was not crowded, was clean & a fast driverless ride.

A very efficient way to travel within or out of Vancouver. Easy ride from airport straight to the iconic Canada place and downtown Vancouver. Also can go all the way upto Surrey. It is fully automated and extremely rare delays have happened. Also you can get a cool front seat window view that allows you to feel like you are driving the train!

We rode the Sky Train several times, once from Coquitlam all the way to Waterfront. Also from Waterfront to the airport to catch our flight. Don't listen to the folks that tell you these trips take longer than a taxi or Uber - they don't, and are SO much more cost effective (usually just a few dollars for a ride across three zones).

Very easy for us locals. Short walk (10 mins?) from terminal to train. Locals are friendly, ask anyone for directions. Four stops on the EXPO Line should do it. Not sure if ticket machines take USA credit cards. Don't get TOO friendly with the locals between the Skytrain station and the Amtrak station. DO enjoy Vancouver. CD
PS - for more info about schedules, google SKYTRAIN. cd

I want to use the Sky Train from YVR to the city. But I have 2 large bags that don't have wheels. Are there trolleys to get to the train at the airport? What about getting off at Vancouver City Centre?
Written 1 February 2023
The trolleys can only be used at the airport and you can't use them for taking luggage to the train station.

How can I reach the Vancouver Airport from Surrey by sky train?
Written 2 July 2022
Open google maps. Put in your starting location in Surrey and your destination as the Airport. It will give you all your options. Train, Bus, car, bike, and walk. We use this all the time when traveling.

Long layover in Vancouver Airport, is there a decent sized movie theatre that’s not to far walk from a sky train station you would recommend?
Written 17 March 2022
what would be the best way and how/where to get ticket for 2 people from airport to cruise dock. From Vancouver airport to cruise dock.
Written 20 January 2020
I think skytrain is most cheapest and fast way to access vancouver water front station. And Canada place ( cruise terminal ) is at most 5 min by walk.
Written 20 January 2020
Can you take luggage on skytrain from airport? I keep reading conflicting points. Also, can you take luggage on a bus from the train station? Thanks in advance
Written 29 November 2019
You can easily take luggage on the Sky Train.
