The area
Neighbourhood: Stanley Park
Stanley Park is Vancouver's premier spot to get up close and personal with nature and animals. The grassy expanse offers outdoor teahouses and stunning views, beachfront hideaways and splash parks. It is a typical getaway spot for friends and families, especially as it is home to Vancouver's aquarium, and some of its best equestrian outlets.

- Stewarts Vacation1,543 contributionsIconic indigenous artThere's a collection of 9 totem poles in this area. Each has a plaque providing details about the pole. Well worth a stop to admire the carvings by indigenous artists and the histories of these poles. They are replicas and replacements of the original totems which are housed in museums for preservation or returned to their places of origin. There's also a Visitor Centre.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 November 2023
- akat411San Francisco, California253 contributionsA Special Site to SeeBeautiful to see these totem poles in person. They're amazing art and craftsmanship. I appreciated the info plaque for each one and the identifying characters within the poles. I can tell from other posters that the look of the area is quite different depending on the season but still an impressive site regardless. There was parking nearby, a gift shop with wonderful native designs and a restroom in the same area. I wouldn't have wanted to visit Vancouver without seeing these.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 8 March 2024
- Hermes_NL 🇳🇱Amsterdam, The Netherlands21,575 contributionsAlso good for people watchingThe poles are always nice to see. Since five years ago, one or two with visible male parts appear to have been removed. Hopefully they are in a museum now. If you enjoy people watching, this is also a good place. The nearby gift shop “At the totem poles” also serves a decent cup of coffee.Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 13 May 2024
- Princess279East Brunswick, New Jersey1,128 contributionsNot to be missedIt's a special place full of history and stories you might or might not hear (depending on who brings you on the tour). The downfall for us was coming here with a tour. This park deserves much more time than we could spend here.Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 4 July 2024

The totem poles are approx 1km into the park and adjacent to cute gift shop / cafe. The park is huge and totem poles are definitely one of the main attractions in the park - really glad we went to see them but we were a little underwhelmed. Interesting to read about history / culture however in my opinion there are better attractions within Vancouver

Best totems I have seen. However, there is a limited amount of excitement that can be generated from the exhibit. The explanatory plaques helped understand a little about the various symbols on each totem, but they were far from being comprehensive. One cannot approach closer than about 10 meters to some of the totems, which detracts from the experience. Also, the surrounding environment was not very well kept. Perhaps that was intended in order to place them in a native environment, but it was a detraction, from my vantage point. If you are going to the park anyway, make a special effort to see the totems.

Whilst in Stanley Park we went to see the totem poles at Brockton Point. They are set nicely on one side in the long grass with a backdrop of trees rather than dotted about where people would climb on them and ruin them. So nicely done. It adds to their authenticity.
If you haven't seen totem poles elsewhere these are a good example and you can combine this with other stuff in the park.
We liked them and there is plenty of other stuff close by.

Next visit, I will take the time to read each and every plaque. The First Nation's people are the raison d'etre for these totems. The Vancouver Parks Department bought up a bunch of totems in the 1920's (some dated back to 1880). Now some of those originals reside in museums. Wood does what nature wills, after all.
Some of the shorter totems are house posts, intended to support their roofs. There is a cultural divide and only knowledge and willingness will span it. Totems aren't all about the art, totems tell their stories.

Didn't think I would enjoy seeing the totem poles as much as I did. This part of the park always seems to attract a crowd so please be patient. They have info on each of the poles so you know what you're looking at which makes it so much more interesting. They are colorful, lovely and filled with history.

Looking at the Totem poles it’s hard to comprehend how old they actually are. You only need 30 mins to take a good look at them. In front of each one, the notice board tells you all the history of them. They are fascinated to see and probably one of the best collections of totem poles in one area

Well worth a visit when in Vancouver. It only needs a short time but the poles and their history enhance a visit to British Columbia. Nice little gift shop and cafe with picnic tables under nearby trees.

If you want to take advantage of the hop on off bus service then I suggest u look up on Groupon as there will be many other activities & events at good discounts (20-75% off standard rate).
