We travel to Kelowna BC from Calgary AB,on a monthly basis from spring to fall. It is a wonderful drive during may-oct but prior I would recommend flying due to unpredictable weather through the mountains. Even in May watch for weather reports but majority of the time is fine.
We travel through Sicamous route, which is by far more scenic, but make certain to plan breaks to take in the beauty. If planning to stay overnight along the way, I would recommend one of these Canmore, Banff, Revelstoke, Kelowna. The drive from Calgary to Kelowna averages 7.5 -8. hrs with a break for lunch, so you could easily drive straight through, however there is so much beauty, if you have the time, stretch it out.
If going further than Kelowna, BC towards Vancouver, plan overnight stops so you can enjoy wineries, orchards and several various attractions. Make certain to stop for their FRESH FRUIT , there are several local orchard stops along the way. If you have the opportunity to pack a picnic lunch, there are some spectacular views and picnic spots. Just plan for TIME to ENJOY! There is a hot springs stop half way between Golden and Revelstoke on hwy 1, so even a swim suit and towel if you want a relaxation break.
Fuel up in Canmore before you hit the BC prices, it saves you and try to refuel again in revelstoke since Golden is always much higher.
There's some wonderful restaurants right in the revelstoke town, so don't be afraid to go off the main route for your meal break. Well worth the few minutes extra plus you get to see the quaint town with some historical homes.
OKANAGAN VALLEY is a beautiful site but especially during May (spring blooms - Sept (various fall colors and delicious fruit)....ENJOY!

The city of Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada, is not only beautiful but is a small enough city that it is not hard to familiarize yourself easily......the okanagan valley has a lot to offer.
This region is the perfect climate for vineyards, orchards & much more. It definitely has four seasons, so although winter does arrive, they have the ski hills but warm enough climate that you can still enjoy the outdoors. Spring comes alive with the blossoms of various orchards, spread throughout the valley & they do not hold back with planting a lot of beautiful flowers throughout all cities in that region. With the weather being so lovely& easy to grow produce, you have a wonderful choice of fresh produce, which most of the local restaurants love highlighting what is in season with local farmers etc. Summer, the city truly explodes with a variety of activities, which they post in a local paper. From weekly outdoor park concerts in various areas of the valley, to wine festivals, sports competitions & so much more. Fall, is spectacular with the autumn colors that linger until Oct/Nov & sometimes they do not experience the snow at all throughout the winter.
There are several places to stay, we have stayed at the Manteo, which is quite nice but we found the rooms to be small. The Grand Hotel, is perfect on not only location but it is lovely too, right in the hub of the activities & on the beautiful Okanagan Lake. There are several more reasonably prices hotels and motels that are clean & updated, on Water Street or across from the downtown park, which is prime location while visiting. This way you can go out and enjoy without worrying about drinking & driving.
There are also a lot of furnished condo rentals that rent out by daily, weekly, monthly. Some near the Grand, so perfect location & good rates with complete suites.
There are several boating tours from dining to sight seeing, also well worth it. The day tour was nice because the Okanagan Lake is so huge and there are several gorgeous homes built along it.
If you love to sight see, a drive can take you to several vineyards for wine tasting, or in a day you can experience several lovely nearby cities, Summerland, Penticton & several more.
The food varieties are plentiful with very good chefs. Many of the wineries have their own dining restaurants that are well worth it. We have not experienced a bad experience with any of the restaurants since they cater to vacationers and their reputation is important for repeat customers.
The airport in Kelowna is now classified International, but it is small enough that there are no stresses what so ever, it is only a 15 min drive into the city centre. Renting a car is well worth it & they are at the airport, we usually find deals since all major car rental co's are there.
A drive to Vancouver is 3.5 hrs away & if you are coming from Calgary, taking the Sicamous, Vernon route is beautiful & well worth it. Approx 7-8 hr drive but well worth the views along the way.
We love Kelowna, BC & it covers it all in our opinion. ENJOY!

Okanagan Valley has it all! My husband wanted to visit this valley. I did not. So glad we did!
We traveled 5600 miles in 34 days and spent 2 weeks of our travel here in Okanagan Valley.
I can't remember a place in all the world that I've liked any better. Vineyards and orchards abound! This is Cherry season and definitely the best cherries I've even tasted. You can pick them yourself for $1.00 a pound or just buy them at any of several outdoor markets in the Valley.
People are wonderful, prices are fair and the scenery unbeatable. I cannot wait to returen. Go you'll never regret seeing all of the beauty in Okanagan Valley. Lakes, mountains, orchards, vineyares and good people. A perfect place for a vacation.

Horrible place, not much for beaches, wine is overpriced and not that good, bad service pretty much anywhere you go, lots of homeless people and drugs everywhere and the bars close really early at like midnight. Even accommodations aren’t that great of choices. They have a gorgeous lake, but don’t utilize it. This is like a two star city.

The vineyards in the fall, against the blue lakes is amazing, surrounded by mountais.Excellent wine & great wild salmon. Peachland, Summerland-names say it all. Tons of B&B, spa's, skiing in the winter and boating in the summer.

What a year for weather! I have just spent two weeks touring the North Okanagan. This is sports car heaven. There is little or no traffic, unlike the central Okanagan, which is crazy. The back roads between Armstrong and Salmon Arm are a blast in my Miata. If you are a driving enthusiast I highly recommend September as the time to visit this jewel of an area. Don't miss drives from Vernon to Nakusp, from Enderby to Mabel lake or down to Nelson and back. Stay in the Armstrong hotel if you really want a retro experience.

Okanagan Valley, with all the wineries, orchards, beautiful views on the lake, nice road system and very friendly people is surely one of the nicest place I visited in Canada. The weather is very warm (approx 35C) in late June and dry. A bit expensive however.

I had the fortune to stay around this area for about a week, what a lovely place, such beautiful plush countryside, even quite hilly, lots of lakes, hence lots of out door activities for people to do. I had a wonderful time, and will be back again.
Unusually too, there seems to be a lot of vineyards here too, so will possibly come back later in the year to sample those delights too, unfortunately I was here in early March, so there was not too much open, but high season, I have been assured is all systems go!

Coming to Okanagan Valley for 2 nights in July. Would you recommend staying in Summerland, Peachland or closer to Kelowna?

Looking for accommodation recommendations. Would you stay in Banff or lake Louise last week of April. Where would you stay? In Okanagan Valley we have 2 nights planned in Oliver. Was wondering whether to stay in Pentincton or Naramata? Again any recommendations?

Si on planifie un séjour à Kelowna vers le 20 novembre, est-ce qu'on pourra visiter des vignobles et faire d'autres belles découvertes?
Merci!

Hi, I would like to know which route to take when travelling from Vancouver to Okotoks, near Calgary via the Okanagan Valley (in August). We are going on a round trip and this is the return journey, we are doing Banff, Jasper, Whistler on the way there, so thought Okanagan Valley would be a different way to return. Also, can you recommend a hotel roughly half way for an over night stay? Thank you.
