- Steve RBolton, United Kingdom600 contributionsOne of the most stunning drives in the world, not to be missedOne of the most stunningly beautiful drives you could ever do. This trip is not to be rushed and if you can split it over three days that's ideal. It's a half day drive south to north but you will be stopping time after time to soak in the serenity and breathtaking views. Their are many places to park and go for short walks or hikes through the surrounding countryside each of which is more amazing than the last. The views are some of the most beautiful of any on the planet, you will be left open-jawed and saying WOW at every turn. Picture this - the most beautiful countryside with an opaque turquoise glacial river winding through it, then add the ominous backdrop of jagged peaks and mountain top glaciers. You will never forget this route, it's so beautiful that your time here will be a truly emotional experience.Visited September 2023Travelled soloWritten 10 October 2023

The informative signage was quite sobering showing the fast retreat of this once magnificent glacier. You can park quite close to the face of the glacier and walk to get great views, even though some of it is covered in dirt at the sides which isn't immediately obvious. Afterwards, go to the Chalet for a hot chocolate and a warming home made soup. Besides some interesting waysides we enjoyed Athabasca and Sunwapta Falls, Athabasca Glacier, and Peyto Lookout in the day long drive through the parkway. You never tire of the raw beauty and it was noticeable how much the glacier had melted back in 8 yrs. This is a must see for nature lovers if anywhere near this area. I do look forward to a return visit in the future. It was amazing how many people were visiting in mid Sept, it felt like summer! The scenery is awesome with countless photographic opportunities.Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 14 October 2023
- luv4phoodMarietta, Georgia920 contributionsScenic drive through the rockiesThis is a really beautiful drive through the Canadian Rockies. However, every viewpoint along the way is very crowded with visitors, even in September. There are lots of places to stop along the parkway to enjoy a quick view of a waterfall or a glacier. I would recommend picking one hike that allows one to get away from the crowded lookout points.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 November 2023

Highly recommend this, Sebastian the guide was really knowledgeable and fun. This is a much smaller vehicle than the normal busses as it only holds around 6 people and the experience was fun from start to finish for the two hours. Have some fantastic photos on the glacier. Would highly recommend this, this is a bit more than going on the bigger busses but worth every penny.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 June 2024
- Paula DLiverpool, United Kingdom139 contributionsAwesome roadOne of the top ten roads in the world for scenery. Jaw dropping. Nice and quiet in early May and fabulous weather. Drove along it a few times during our stay. The mountains either side literally dwarfed the car and made us feel very small! Lots of stop off points along the way for photos/picnics. No service stations or fuel so make sure you're aware of that before you head out.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 22 June 2024

- Cathy HNottinghamshire, United Kingdom9 contributionsAMAZING..... definitely recommend the Icefields and Glacier TourWOW just absolutely fantastic!!!... From the moment we were picked up at our hotel the commentary by Mike (our driver) was absolutely amazing, so much knowledge and learnt a lot about the history of the area. While we were travelling he was always looking out for wildlife and prepared to pull over..... We saw a brown bear stripping bark off a tree ! He went out of his way to ensure we had a memorable day, lots of little extra stops offs as we were a very small group. Cieran our Brewster's Tour host was amazing, what a fantastic guy, so helpful, was very knowledgeable and really great to hear all his tales whilst he's been in Banff/Jasper .. Mum, he's an amazing human being and is eating well !! I really can't recommend this tour enough, we've been in Canada for 3 weeks and this was the ABSOLUTE best your by far !!!Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 June 2024

This was a most amazing drive. We did it from Jasper to Lake Louise and the mountain and valley views are breathtaking all the way. We stopped at many viewpoints including the Athabasca and Sunwapta falls and in most places we could find car park spaces although we were often competing with camper vans and motorhomes! We stopped at the Icefield Centre and walked to the glacier. It is sad to see how much it has retreated in recent years. I’m not sure how helpful driving a bus on it is for conservation! We really wished we’d had more time as we made fewer stops on the second part of our journey. We had beautiful weather and appreciated that most people kept to the speed limit. Obviously though at this time of year conditions change quickly and we met travellers who drove it the next day in snow when it was too bitterly cold to walk to the glacier.

What a beautiful drive! We left Lake Louise at 8am on the northbound journey and got to Jasper closer to 6pm. We stopped at Herbert Lake, Bow Lake, Athabasca Glacier, Tangle Falls, Mistaya Canyon, Sunwapta Falls and Athabasca Falls. Even if you don’t do the stopovers the views alone are worth it. On the way back, the views of the glaciers are breathtaking and we got lucky because the leaves seemed to have turned colours overnight! I could never understand the people who wants to speed on this highway. Such pretty views I would drive slower if I could!

This was a great tour inclusion (even though it is very expensive) as you can walk out on a glass bridge to view the icefields, enjoy a nice meals and go on a 6-wheel drive bus onto the icefields. You do NOT need crampons but you definitely need wind-proof and waterproof clothing and boots. The wind and weather can change at any moment.

Nearly all of the significant attractions of Banff National Park and Jasper National Park were off of the Icefields Parkway. In order to take a drive on this road, individuals had to purchase a cheap park pass for access. Both national parks were covered under the park pass. The money spent to ride this road was definitely worth the cost. I almost drove the entire road from Lake Louise to Jasper, but I had to avoid the last eleven (11) miles insofar as I needed to make my reservation at the Columbia Icefield! While this road was very long and time-consuming, I would definitely encourage people to take their time with the drives. The scenery could only be described as breathtaking, so I made many stops, and I took many small hikes.

The drive on the parkway from Jasper to lake Louise was stunning!!! I believe the drive north to south more scenic. It is hard not to be a distracted driver.
Make sure you have enough gas! From Jasper there is no gas until Saskatchewan crossing about 180 km away or 50 km past the Columbia ice fields. Note: there is a sign going south on the parkway at the Columbia Icefield Center that states gas at 132km!! Do not panic. That is so misleading... 50 km there is gas.
Also no cellphone reception on the parkway past the Athabasca falls until lake Louise. There is a 1 km radius of cell reception around the Icefield centre.
There are numerous rest stops and toilets on both sides of the highway.

This is a great DIY, day drive between Banff and Jasper with many short viewing points and even hikes to stretch your legs as you make your way there. Don't miss Peyto Lake as it equals Banff's Lake Louise and Lake Moraine's beauty. The Rocky Mountain range on both sides of the highway are close, towering, and unforgettable. It gave new meaning to "Oh Canada!" Once we arrived in Jasper, we took a wildlife day tour with Pursuit and were fortunate to see a Grizzly bear and 2 cubs along with a black bear along the way to Jasper's Lake Maligne.

The Icefields Parkway is quite simply one of the best drives in the world, the views on the drive are stunning. We started at Lake Louise at spent 2 days on the road stopping off at Crowsfoot Glacier, Bow Lake, Peyto Lake, Waterfowl Lakes, Mistaya Canyon on the way through to our overnight at Rampart Creek Campground. Day 2 we took in the Weeping Wall, The Big Bend, Columbia Icefields, Goats & Glacier View and Athabasca Falls before arriving in Jasper. Everyone should experience this road at least once in their lifetime!

I am hoping to travel between Banff and jasper in the first week of April with a few days in each town either side. Currently I have a rental car booked but wondering if it’s better to just get the sun dog tours bus between and utilise the roam transit in Banff. Will I miss out on much if I don’t drive myself. Are there many stops/sights that time of the year that I’ll be missing by being on the bus?

Hi Dylan
My choice would always be to have the flexibility of a hire car, there are many times when you could want something different to a tour schedule and that can be frustrating. I found that Icefields Parkway has lots of off-shoots and 'off the beaten path' places where you may want to go for a short hike or just pause and enjoy the beauty. Hope this helps make up your mind, enjoy your trip.

Travelling to Canada in late march to early April. I am hoping to travel from Banff to Jasper along the Ice Fields Parkway. The main reason I am going is to hopefully see the place covered in snow - incl. banff and jasper. I was thinking of getting a rental car that is equipped with snow tyres. My options would be to travel in the last week and a half of march or the first week and a half of April. Is there much of a difference in terms of snow coverage between the two sets of dates? I want to get a rental car with snow tyres but have zero snow driving experience. Am I silly even thinking about attempting this? Is it smarter to get the bus but potentially miss out on some stops/flexibility? If the road becomes too dangerous are there safe alternatives?
Written 22 February 2024
Can only speak of doing it in the summertime. We found the bus trip was great, plenty of stops and no driving worries. inexperienced driver in real winter conditions I would not advise - would probably be so concerned the fun of touring may well and truly vanish before you even got half way!
also consider if cloudy and snowing that time of the year you may see virtually none of the magnificent mountain and glacier views from the road.

Driving from calgary to jasper in may next year do I need a pass or permit to drive on the roads to get there I will been stopping to see the train museum
Written 2 May 2023
No, you don't need a pass to drive on the Icefields Parkway. I would suggest you take your time and enjoy the evolving and grand scenery. Also, make sure you are properly gassed up (if using traditional car). Gas stations get to be few and far between unless you are in the major towns.

Hi Planning a two week trip in BC and Alberta. I've been reading Q&A on the Icefields Parkway. We had planned spending 3 days to explore all the main attractions between Banff and Lake Louise is that too much? We are not avid hikers but will take time to do the shorter ones or walk to the main obervation points.
Also would it be strategic to sleep these 3 nights in Lake louise and go back and forth every day to different attractions?
Thank !!

It is nice to see that you want to take the Icefields parkway. But you should make sure you check the daily forecast. In winter the parkway can be shut down at any time. I think the best thing to do is consult with the accommodations at Lake Louise because they are more up to date on what is open. Some of the sites are not open in the winter. Make sure you have lots of fuel as there is very limited services. Once you get past Saskatchewan Crossing there is nothing until you get to Jasper.
I hope this helps

Hello
Apologise if this has been covered already but we are planning to drive from Lake Louise to Jasper via the icefield parkway. We are stopping at lake Louise the night before and will have a car with us and it will be in July.
I was just wondering if people would recommend driving the icefield parkway in a day or to take our time and do it in 2? If you recommend 2 days do you know where the best places to stop on route would be?
Thanks very much
Sarah

If you like to hike a lot and are an avid photographer then plan on two days and you can stay at the lodge located about mid way on the ice fields at the glacier welcome center. That said we did it without any problem in a day and stopped several times including taking the trip to the glacier. The days are very long when you are going ( 15 hrs of daylight+).

Planning to travel from Calgary through Banff and Jasper parks in a 40' RV. Any road concerns for a vehicle of this size? Also, are their parking areas that would accommodate our size?

We did the journey on a coach and did see lots of places where you could park a large RV. Unsure of the cost however, the whole setup within the National Parks are incredible so I’m sure you guys will have no issues.

Is it worth it to do part of the parkway and make it a one day trip from Banff and back instead of staying in Jasper overnight? Thanks in advance!

HI dipban, well the Icefields parkway is a long road. we stayed at bow lake in num ti lodge which was great. it is about 30km. north of lake louise. I went in late July and it was amazing. there is also a cut little hotel in the parking lot at Saskatchewan crossing about 30 km north of bow lake. I hope that helps, Regards David.

Hi,
We will be in Banff from Oct 11 to 16, and I see there are many tours offer including Icefields parkway.
do you recommend self-drive or go with tour company?
Thank you so much.

The Parkway is best solo. Enjoy it.
Time arrival at visitor center for Columbia Icefields in early morning as crowds usually are present from 11:00 onward. You are outside prime season so may not be too bad.
There are numerous hiking trails off parkway so you can spend as much time there as you want hiking and exploring. Remember bear spray. We saw 2 on our drive along roadway.
I’d book my tickets online with time slot for sky-deck and Icefield visit. The solo drive up is nothing now as Icefield has receded where parking lot is.
It was nice to take the snow vehicle right up on Icefield and get out with time to walk and obtain water from run off. They then shuttle you to sky deck as there is no public parking. You are allowed self guided tour here or we had free tour guide at our visit (August).
Hope this helps. Just plan accordingly before going. Only one gas station along parkway from Banff. Ensure you are full before as the price is + 25 cents/litre.
Any other Q’s do not hesitate.

Can you drive the parkway from Banff and back in one day or should we stay in Jasper for one night? How many days do recommend to see Banfff and Yoho National Parks? We are not hikers.

HI I hope you can get this answer while your in Canada. Me and my friend landed in Calgary, slept over then drove to Canmore which is a gorgeous small town 25 minutes from Banff. We stocked up on any munchies we might need and also any medication, there isn't a lot on the Icefields Parkway other than Banff and Lake Louise town. We then drove up to Bow Lake and Stayed at the Num-Ti-Jah Lodge, this was a great location with a lake glacier and waterfall as a backdrop for breakfast. From here we drove to Saskatchewan Crossing about 40 minutes north. There is a gas station and restaurant here plus you can buy bear spray $70, expensive. Very close to here is route 11, maybe 3 minutes away. If you want a very nice walk with a little hiking go to Kootenay Ecological Reserve which has Siflfeur Falls. It is not touristy and you will have a real feel of wilderness without walking to far. Driving all the way to Jasper is fine but I would stay up there for a couple of days because it is separate from Banff and Lake Louise. It is such an amazing place, find a quiet place near a lake and relax. You can't see everything in one trip. I'm definitely going back.
