- Robert WCorvallis, Oregon300 contributionsAn easy stroll with beautiful sights. There are many beautiful hikes around the iconic Lake Louise. However the simple trail to the end of the lake will provide one with an nice walk with fantastic sights. The is an attractive option for those more physically challenged. If you are staying in Banff you can take the Roam Transit express. This can busy so be sure to reserve you seats well ahead of timeVisited September 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 17 October 2023
- Debbie SErin, Canada55 contributionsWow! Best place on earth!OMG the most beautiful place on earth! We got there at 7:30 am To watch the sunrise but it was quite overcast that day so unfortunately we didn’t see it. But it did not disappoint- wow, wow, wow! So many place to walk/hike. Definitely do the walk to the end of the lake to the “beach” and see the view with the fairmont in the background. Thank goodness we were there in October so the crowds weren’t bad. I can’t imagine what that place would be like in the high season! Highly recommend (we went twice!). Not really many places To eat in lake Louise so pack a lunch if you can or if you want to break then eat at the fairmont hotel.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 October 2023
- SeniorTravelerTF1,239 contributionsIt has not been overstated, it is gorgeous. Beware, transport here and parking takes planning. One of the few places I can say has not been over-hyped. It is immensely popular because it deserves to be. The best recommendation I can give is to carefully plan your transport and parking. We used the shuttle from the lot at the ski hill in Lake Louise, and those reservations were full for the days we chose in September. Very comfortable and convenient. You can also take a shuttle from Banff, part of the excellent Roam system. A lucky few, if you arrive very early in the day, or very late when you have little time to see anything, may find parking at the lake. Trails all across the spectrum. We took one along the rim in front of the famous hotel, then the rock pile at the end with its spectacular photo opps, and then back into surrounding country.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 November 2023
- Pam Fox40 contributionsBeautiful views of the lakeWe had a view of the lake directly in front of our hotel room window. The lake is an amazing teal color, and the photos of the lake are unique. The hotel has several dining rooms, and the food is excellent. We had an outstanding breakfast buffet with dozens of choices. There are a number of shops in the hotel with merchandise ranging from cheap souvenirs to expensive jewelry. The staff are friendly and helpful. The lobby is spacious and has ample areas for sitting and thinking about the next activity.Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 19 November 2023
- Kevin BMount Juliet, Tennessee4,087 contributionsBreathtaking!Lake Louise is one of the most beautiful places that we've ever visited and one that has stuck with us for years. We visited here in June and it was an overcast day, so it was still a bit chilly, which was perfect for a hike. We missed the shuttle, so we drove to the Fairmont and had lunch there before walking to the hiking trails along Lake Louise. There's a nice easy trail that winds alongside the lake and is just under 3 miles round trip. It's a great way to see the lake from a variety of different angles and it's just a beautiful hike. Lake Louise is one place that we will definitely visit again and Banff in general is an absolutely breathtaking park.Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 December 2023
- Simon DSawtell, Australia327 contributionsUnbelievable frozen lake walk 😀wow a winter must do. Easy ROAM bus from Banff with wifi about 50min later to the car park at the Fairmont. A winter wonderland. We walked the lake to the frozen waterfalls saw people climbing them, walked back. About 50min. There were x country skiers, ice skating and the horse sleigh rides on the frozen lake as well. A brilliant black forest hot chocolate at the Fairmont cafe and a much welcome place to warm up. The window sill seats are heated! First bus at 8.30am… from Banff be 15min early and left to come home on the 11.40am bus be 10min early at the pickup. About $75 for 3 on the bus. A great half day. Highly recommended.Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 20 January 2024
- luv4phoodMarietta, Georgia918 contributionsGo sightseeing beyond the lakefront.Lake Louise is at the top of everyone's list for a visit to Banff, and with good reason. It is a beautiful lake with tremendous scenery all around. However, if one never leaves the banks of the lake, you only see a small sliver of the beauty of the area. Hike to one of the tea rooms or up to the beehive to get the most out of your visit to Lake Louise.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 February 2024
- Pauline SOxfordshire, United Kingdom196 contributionsBeautiful scenery but rather busy! This was really busy even in October. However, we did get parked and eventually got our ticket and I am pleased we did as it was a beautiful spot. It was difficult to take photos without a head popping into them and there were queues for the snacks and lavatory but I am glad we went.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 March 2024
- sainbashaIrvine, California4,248 contributionsFrozen wonderWhat a beauty. It was mid May but still the lake was frozen. But what a lively sight. It was around a 45 minutes comfortable drive from Banff downtown to the lake. We left our hotel and reached the lake around 9.30 AM. Lucky for us it is beginning of the season and we easily found a parking spot. We walked up to the frozen beauty and it was awesome. Lovely frozen body surrounded by mountains. We actually walked on the lake as were the other tourists. Although one has to be careful as it was beginning of summer and ice could crack. Views were lovely. We tried to take an uphill track but it was too wet and icy so we did not take the risk of climbing. We then took the trail around the lake. This took us around an hour. Good fun. Took lots of pics and enjoyed the few hours we spent there.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 4 June 2024
- FLtrotterSt. Augustine, Florida356 contributionsAmazing post card scenic but the crowdsThe lake Louise hotel is right there by the lake as well as the throngs of people and packed expensive parking. The lake is eye beholding, so scenic, but if you think enjoying nature and crowds mix poorly then this is another example of that. Only mid May it was still quite cool and snow on some trails. We took a trail that led up to a meadow but what started off as mucky wet quickly became snow 2 feet deep in places. It seemed like much of the lake was still frozen. I can imagine the only time the lake isn’t crowded is during a winter blizzard- just maybe. Still some areas, like lake moraine, and a few trails closed due to hard pack. I think June would be a better time for me to visitVisited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 June 2024

Such a beautiful lake, but it is best enjoyed first thing in the morning or perhaps on weekdays when it is less crowded, and maybe before the canoe rental place opens. I have heard that parking gets crazy in the morning but we visited a couple of times closer to sunset and there were tonnes of spaces. Canoeing is pricey but the view of the lake and the mountains from the water is a nice, different perspective. We were there mid-September and there were lots of bugs in the evening. They don’t bite, just annoying. It can get crowded so don’t forget your mask!

We come here every year, and every year, we ask ourselves, why are we fighting with 60,000 visitors per day to try to get a photo of the Lake? I know the pandemic has caused a lot of economic hardship for the tourist sector but this is probably the BEST time for locals to come and enjoy OUR Lake, coz I've never seen it so quiet!
They have cut down on the number of parking spots by the Lake, so we were STILL not able to park close by (which is frustrating) but we managed to find parking further down the mountain and it was a 15 min hike back up to the Lake, which was doable, even for someone like me. Alternative is to take the ROAM transit from Banff for $10 each way.
It was so amazing to see the Lake without having to fight through the ridiculous crowds of visitors and huge tour buses. There were people there but the numbers were way down, so much so that we did not have to fight for a spot for photos. We were able to enjoy the hikes and the views without the frustration. We also took the time to go out on a canoe ride, which we had not done in years. It was breathtaking! You get a very different view of the mountains, glacier and the Chateau Lake Louise from the middle of the Lake.
If you are a local Albertan, I would highly recommend coming here this summer, not only to enjoy the Parks without the huge international crowds, but also to support our local economy.

We chose to enjoy the summer solstice here and do a hike up to little beehive with a stop at the teahouse. The lake and scenery is beautiful and a bucket list experience. Getting there is not. Some things I wish I knew before I came:
1. Parking is impossible even on a rainy weekday in mid-June before peak season (we came on a Monday late afternoon). We were unable to park in the Lake Louise lot. Don't even chance it and waste the time driving up to check/back down like we did.
2. Luckily, I anticipated this and purchased park and ride tickets ahead of time. You have to purchase 48 hrs before your arrival date from the Parks Canada website and have to choose a time window to catch the shuttle. You follow signs along the highway for park and ride at the ski resort. Parking is free there.
3. Even for a 2-3pm departure on a Monday, the bus was essentially full.
4. The last shuttle departs Lake Louise at 7:30pm for the park and ride lot. The banfflakelouise.com website FAQs suggest you take a taxi if you miss the shuttle and list a number of taxi/shuttle options. We decided to miss it on purpose as it was solstice and wanted to enjoy the evening sun without being rushed. Unfortunately we found out that this is NOT a viable option. Taxis come from Banff and can take over an hour to get to you. It's too far to walk, especially if it's late and you've been hiking all day. Luckily the lovely and kind staff at the Fairmont took pity on us and drove us down. I don't know what we would have done otherwise.
5. Even if you somehow catch a taxi, the gate to the park and ride closes, meaning your car is trapped inside. We got there just as a Parks staff was closing the gate and was not pleased to see us, told us we better hurry up. Our car was not the only one in there and we saw at least one group of people behind us walking to the park and ride. This information is not readily available anywhere. Why they ever listed taxis as an option and don't make the gate closure more clear is beyond me.

We had been staying at the adjacent Fairmont Chateau and the view from the hotel was spectacular. With it being the festive season it was like something out of a classic movie set - but better. You can rent ice skates from the hotel for a couple of hours and enjoy the wonderful scenery whilst giving your legs a workout. They entire area was stunning and would probably be just as impressive for different reasons in the summer when the lake wasn’t frozen. This is a must see location and the adjacent facilities at the hotel are excellent. Be aware that the distance from the town to the Lake isn’t too far - but is problematic to reach without transport. We hired a local taxi from downtown as the hourly frequency of the hotel shuttle meant a long wait if you missed it (as we did). You can negotiate a fare, but be aware that it can be up to $20 per person if the weather turns bad!

We thought Lake Louise was absolutely beautiful. The setting looks like something you would see on a postcard - gorgeous aquamarine water, snow capped mountains, stands of pine trees, an amazing historic hotel, hiking trails. Surprisingly it wasn't our favorite lake, just due to the crowd factor. Lots of people jostling to take the perfect photo. The parking lot fills up early, so we took the shuttle here from the Park and Ride center. The line was quite long with about a forty minute wait; luckily this year they're starting a new program which allows people to buy shuttle tickets online ahead of time. I love that they're doing that. We had planned to eat lunch at the historic hotel, but they told us that first priority went to guests, and unfortunately there was no room for other visitors. Had we known that was a possibility, we would have packed something and brought it along with us for a picnic at the lake. Overall we're happy we went - the lake is iconic and stunning, but if you're looking for a serene, peaceful experience, there are several other beautiful lakes in the area you can visit that don't have the overcrowded nature of this one.

We arrived at Lake Louise at 9.00 in the morning on a weekend early September. It was a beautiful clear sunny day and the car park was full, so we left. We decided to try a couple of days later this time arriving in the dark at 6.00 in the morning, the car park was empty, but it was cold, damp and cloudy which was a shame. We waited in the car for daylight then headed to the lake, although it wasn’t the best weather is was still a beautiful sight. A group of young ladies were somewhat annoying posing for selfies on the lake shore rocks. oblivious to others who just wanted photographs of this natural beauty. We walked to the end of the lake but didn’t hike to Lake Agnes. Instead we took the shuttle to Morraine Lake.

It was our first time visiting Lake Louise from Ontario. Upon arrival, it was super busy at 8am, but it wasn't overly populated. I recommend you arrive at lake Louise at 8am or before, or at night time past 530pm. Luckily the sun stays up until around 10pm.
We decided to follow the path around the lake to the back of Lake Louise and hiked up the hill not knowing what to expect. I only hear about people visiting the lake and doing some canoeing, but not too many people hike the trails behind.
It was a gradual climb, but it's doable for everyone and the view is super rewarding. The best part was standing under the mountains still covered in snow and being able to see Lake Louise and the valley behind you. We even managed to see some ground squirrels, a porcupine and chipmunks.
We had also hiked to the tea house at the top for a quick drink and snack. They take credit card, but it's a 4.00 fee. You need to bring cash with you. The menu is basically all vegetarian and nothing too exciting. Wouldn't eat there again.
Overall, it was about a 2 hour hike up and down is a bit quicker. It's a must to see Lake Louise, but hiking behind is 100x better. You'll love it there.

We come here almost every summer and every year, we have run into massive crowds and it is NOT pleasant, not to mention damage to the sensitive ecosystem. We came today and it was sooooo pleasant! No huge crowds, limited car access!
We were able to take photos in front of the lake and did not even have to dodge thousands of tourists. Yes, I know, we were tourists too, but we were local tourists. I think it is really important to limit the number of cars and people coming to the lake daily. If you are staying at the Banff Springs Hotel, you get complimentary parking at the Chateau Lake Louise (summer deal for local residents). If you are not staying at a Fairmont, then the best thing to do is to park at the overflow parking on Highway 1, then take their bus up to the lake.
Once at the lake, there are several trails to choose from - one to suit every level of fitness. If you don't want anything strenuous, there is a nice flat trail that goes along the lake. If you want something a little more work, you can hike up to the Tea House or even the Glaciers.
There are canoes and paddle boards for rent. It is an experience that should not be missed.

My husband surprised me with a trip to Lake Louise for Christmas. I was super excited but to be honest a little bummed that we were going in the winter vs spring/summer so we wouldn't see the turquoise water. However, once we got there, the view is amazing no matter the season. I think it was probably even better to go in the winter; less people and we were able to enjoy the frozen lake each morning with no crowds (before 10 am)! Our pictures were beautiful with the snow peak mountains in the background and the ice castle is impressive to view. Plus, there's something amazing about walking across a frozen lake in the middle of a national park that is a wow factor. Needless to say, no matter what season you go, the lake is beautiful and worth seeing!

Beautiful lake with a nice easy walk around it and lots of other more difficult hiking options. We visited at the start of June and the lake was still mostly frozen over. They said it was a few weeks behind the normal schedule for thawing. The guide said the best time to go is late September, to see the lake unfrozen but also avoid the crowds. The guide said that in the summer they get 20,000 visitors to the lake a day, not including the Fairmont hotel guests, so I imagine it would be very crowded in the summer.
During the winter you can cross country ski and ice skate on the frozen lake. In the summer you can rent a canoe (it is very expensive - 150 dollars an hour!!). During this time when it is slowly thawing you cannot go on the lake.

I have booked a trip to Lake Louise for my wife and myself. We depart from the Atlanta airport in two weeks, flying into Calgary then renting a car to drive to Lake Louise. I thought I did all my homework regarding winter conditions and a couples months ago when asking about driving I found information that said a front wheel drive car with all season tires should be fine as long as I am on major highways like the trans-Canada highway. I would love to update my rental and book a 4WD with snow/winter tires, but online there doesn’t seem to be a way. I will call when business hours begin, but does anyone have any feedback on driving from Calgary to Lake Louise in winter?

We got to Moraine Lake at 6 an and the parking lot was about 98% filled. My husband dropped us off and found one a few last spots left. Lake Louise parking lot is larger so you might have better luck and also because some of the sunrise people may be leaving by 8. The sunrise at either is beautiful if you are able to fit in your schedule.
