Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Glad the detour off the road wasn’t too far as there wasn’t much to see here. It’s historic and well maintained but we couldn’t go inside. Good views and it does get you thinking why on earth people felt compelled to create such a building in the middle of a lava field.

The church is picturesque and worth viewing. The trails through the lavafield to the beach are not that exciting, there are more interesting trails with better views elsewhere on the peninsula. We were there in mid June and it was sunny but incredibly windy, almost unpleasantly so.

Ok so I lie a little we were here before….10 years ago we got married in this church and came out to the northern lights!!! Amazing inside, really unique, an old whalers church I think, it stands alone (away from the hotel) and has an amazing feel to it whatever the conditions, snow, wind, summer or night. Will always have a special place in our hearts as will the hotel….before it was ever on the tourist map!! Love coming back

The church is a highly photographed landmark , and you’ll usually see it depicted in pictures of Snæfellsness peninsula in west Iceland. The history fo the church is spoken to on an informative sign just outside the church. There are also some small trails through small lava fields that start from the church that will take you towards the coast. Overall the experience was alright. However if planning again I’d account for a 15 minute stay at most. There are much more Interesting landmarks to see with limited time in Snæfellsnesvegur.

If you've done any research looking at trips to Iceland...you've probably seen this church before! Its the only one of its kind and in very good condition given its over 150 years old. It is safe to say its very photogenic!
Oddly, we visited on a Sunday at around midday and it was closed so sadly we couldn't see the interior at all...truthfully I'm not religious so I didn't mind this too much but it would have been interesting none the less.
Quite an interesting spot for it being it isn't too close to the road and takes a few minutes detour...oh and the fact it is in the middle of an old lava field!

We stopped here for a quick photo stop on one of our tours, and I am so glad we did. It’s beautiful. The small black church stands out for miles as you approach. It’s a really lovely spot. The church isn’t open but you can walk around and explore the area a little. When the sun shines you can get some gorgeous pictures here. We visited in the snow and it was quite something.

Iceland has many such small, cute and isolated Churches. Mostly, they're white with red roofs.
This one, in southern Snaefellsness peninsula differs from all others. It's totally black, only with white door and windows.
In front is a free parking lot, but the Church was closed so we could only peek inside through windows. A very picturesque and beautiful site to visit.

I'm not sure if Búðir can be called a town as there are literally 3 buildings there. O yeah, and the church. That makes it 4. So the church is standing in the middle of nowhere. It's over 150 years old but is well maintained and in very good condition.

A very special place for us as got married here in Dec 2020.
Magical!
The whole Snæfellsnes peninsula is stunningly beautiful - lots to see and do. Car needed to really get around.
We were there during the winter snow - perfectly accessible but take your warm clothes!
Hotel Budir was a lovely 'treat' hotel to stay at as well.

I love the black structures all around Iceland. This church really stands out and makes for some good photographs. Our hotel was next door, so it was convenient for us to visit this landmark a few times. It seemed to be always windy!
