We visited the Elafonissi beaches on a beautiful afternoon in late September. The beaches were still quite settled, as the season in Elafonissi is very long. But as is to be expected, the further south-west you go, away from the parking lot, the more human presence decreases, until you find yourself in almost deserted spots, even with coves frequented by some nudists.
Obviously I confirm that the whole site is splendid, in all its different manifestations. Generally, the side facing south-east is mostly sandy, with shallow water coves separated by rocks emerging at the surface of the water. The shallow water and the sandy bottom also continue at a considerable distance from the shoreline.
On the other hand, the north-west facing side is radically different. Here, as you move considerably away from the parking lot, the seabed is also not very deep, but the rocks are the dominant element, and they also prevail on the shoreline. Overall, the dark color both of the water and of the coastal rocks, at least under the afternoon light, is a bit disturbing, and doesn't tempt you to swim. In fact, the sea and the beach were deserted here.
Of course, things are very different if you walk for a shorter distance into the peninsula. In this case the north-west side has one of the greatest attractions, that is, large, almost closed lagoons of shallow water, a delight for children (and for their parents).
Again moving away from the mainland, the peninsula presents beautiful examples of dunes, generated by the wind exactly like those of the desert itself. On them thrives xerophilous vegetation (= suitable for a dry climate) among which sea lilies stand out, largely fenced (but the whole site is a protected area).
It is noteworthy that the coast behind the peninsula is almost devoid of dwellings. On the hill facing the beaches we noticed a series of terraces that appear recent: our mate, area connoisseur, told us that they were produced by a company hoping to obtain permits to build a resort; but it was only allowed to create greenhouses (as there are also in the Paleòchora area).
It's therefore a site as a whole not only among the most beautiful, but also among the most secluded in the Mediterranean coasts; thanks also to the challenging road that must be taken to get there.

Elafonissi Beach is an area of spectacular beauty. When we were there, however, there was not much to be enjoyed. First, it is not the best choice if you want to swim as it is generally quite shallow. What destroyed everything, however, was the crowd of people. They were all around you, in the water and on the beach. Loud games were going on in front of our rented sunbeds, sandcastles were built, babies were crying,... And all this after a long long drive. Definitely not worth it.

We visited Elafonissi beach as a car trip from Chania, and don't expect an easy drive , but it is worth it once you get there. There is free parking, coffee bars and plenty of sunbeds to rent. The best experience is when you walk along the peninsula, you will find a more wild side of it. We loved this beach, I definitely recommend while visiting Chania.

Day trip from Chania. Lovely scenic drive through the mountains. Free parking next to The beach and plenty of umbrellas and deck chairs plus cafe stalls, showers, wc’s and water sports gear for hire.

It wasn’t too busy, but probably is during the summer. Shallow lagoon and some rocks where you can see fish.

Not sure that i noticed all the pink sand they talk about (there’s a bit) but it’s very pretty all the same and you can walk around the peninsula looking in the rock pools.

Wow, this is the best beach I have visited in Europe, clean, safe and the water so inviting.. large free parking, which allows you to park within a 5 min of your sun bed, which cost €10 for the day.. There is a couple of beach huts where you can get snacks and a drink and a toilet block if required.

we come with group and may be too early - about 9 am, it was windy and cold, from left side - bangs, nobody was swimming and the right side - it was too shallow only ankle-length or knee-deep, the main reason to come here - only this pink sand and it doesn't look so colorful in reality. But but in general, the place is certainly beautiful and unusual

Took a rental from Kavros and enjoyed the trip. An absolute must if you're on the island. The pink sand beach is one of the most beatiful places in Crete. Just go there, you wont regret it. Will come back for sure!

Went mid-October, water was a bit cool but it was still warm enough to swim and enjoy sunbathing. The sand is pink - in places, but perhaps best seen through a snorkel? Bright pink stripes of sand over the greyer base. Sand is fine otherwise an the beach fairly shallow all over, with patches of rocks good for snorkelling.

The very shallow lagoon is beautiful and great for small kids.

I can imagine it getting a bit too crowded during summer months, as it was, there were plenty of people but not overcrowded as such. It makes sense to walk further to the Elafonissi Island, for the views of the sand dunes and the plants there, and for more beach space. I find the price of 10 € per umbrella spot a bit steep, especially as I was by myself, and just flopped on the beach past the umbrella area, I did not walk as far as you can go to the protected area. Bring your own umbrella there if you want, no shade is otherwise available.

Only thing maybe lacking was choice of food? I had a sandwich and a coffee, both fine, but there are not any choices of restaurants at the beach itself, perhaps further away from it there is more.

I stayed for 3 nights in one of the very few hotels near the beach; the best time were early morning and late afternoon… not that hot, no people, amazing beauty.
The beach is very long, great for walking if you are up to it. I loved the part without sun beds… it’s more wild, beautiful plants, good snorkeling along the shore. It was windy on a couple of days but still great for swimming. There are very bright stars at night …
