I thought that 360Â¥ was a bit pricy at first, but boy I was wrong. There is a lot to see and do here. Firstly there are the artefacts in the museum area. Then you learn about making the condiments in a traditional manner ( chilli paste, soy sauce, and fish flavoured oil) before moving on to the cooking. There is more to see but this is Chengdu in August, it is 40degrees and the humidity is ridiculous, so the kitchen is the cool option. Everything is in English, our guide, Melody, is lovely. She walks us through the procedure and then we do it ourselves. In the cooking area they provide beer, wine, baijiu, soft drinks all without charge, they'll help you take photographs and there is no rush. At the end you get a framed certificate and a goodie bag, chef's hat, branded apron and the recipes in English. Finally a visit to the shop means you go home fully equipped to cook Sichuan food for your family.
Great value, informative and tasty

We brought our grandchildren(age 12) to come here for introduction to sichuan.
Cuisine

First we were introduced to a street full of food stalls including cold meat, soup, appetizers, and dessert place, where we can sampled my food products

Afterwards we were escorted to a huge yard where we were lecture about sauce making how they do the fermentation. We were very impressed with the young lady who speaks fluent English which makes the visit more interesting

This was followed by the event highlights where each one of us had our own cutlery, kitchen cookware, our own aprons and our own hats—-we have to make our own food!. We have to make three dishes which were chicken ,a soup dish and panda dumpling for desserts

all the ingradients were all prepared for us and well covered in Saran Wrap. There were kitchen helps throughout the cooking class which makes it fun and easy for us.the highlights of course you have to taste your own cooking……which was our diner

Then comes the heading out diploma ceremony with the head chef to greet us….the entire afternoon and evening was fun!!

We totally enjoy this !

A visit to Pixian and the Sichuan Cuisine Museum made a delightful half-a-day trip from Chengdu. The museum has displays of historic kitchen utensils, crockery, silverware, models of dishes and photos. There are English captions throughout, although Chinese-language wall tableaux are more comprehensive. The territory includes a small farm and a bean paste 'distillery' where the famous Pixian chili bean paste ferments in clay jars in the courtyard. The museum has paste for sale, as well as pickles and snacks. The museum restaurant with the demonstration hall seemed stuffy; nobody was eating there despite the lunch time. But the tea-house in a shaded courtyard inside a kitchen god's guildhall was hugely popular with visitors and locals alike. There, we were lucky to catch a Sunday afternoon Sichuan opera show together with a crowd of cheering pensioners sipping their tea.

The ticket was 20 yuan. To get to the museum we took a bus from Jinsha Bus Station (50 min), then transferred to a local bus headed to Gucheng (Old Town).

This is a fun event and good item to do with friends looking to socialize / do something different, families looking to do something together, people like me looking for an easy & enjoyable activity while fighting jet lag or just because you want to try something new.

Cooking class:
- Very enjoyable, well organized and would be great for situations noted above
- I didn’t learn new techniques or items along those lines which was fine
- Food tasted good and conversation with the instructor was fun

Grounds, museum and other items to note:
- The guide / cooking instructor spoke very good English and was a pleasure to talk with during the event.
- The museum is okay
- The grounds, including the pots where chili and soy sauce is aging, are very nice.

Bottom line: A enjoyable way to spend a few hours.

I cannot recommend this cooking school/museum highly enough. Professional staff, clean beautiful facility full of antiques and art work, delicious dishes, and a thoroughly enjoyable learning experience in the complex and daunting world of Sichuan cuisine. The facility includes an impressive collection of aging red chilis in various stages of fermentation: one year to six years to use in various dishes, along with fermented soy beans in the process of making soy sauce. We planned ahead and selected a series of dishes too complicated to learn at home such as mapo tofu, fish in boiling oil, and chicken in red chilies.

The kitchen was completely organized, the instructor a true master (such that the rest of the staff came and observed, taking photos of each step). After preparing our dishes, we enjoyed them with cold beers and a range of complimentary sides like soup, rice wine, fresh fruit, and other unidentifiable dishes one more delicious than the last. Only problem is you will not easily find the place on line or even here on TripAdvisor, as they don’t have a working website so your tour company must set it up for you. Really nice people, totally fun, very professional, and a truly impressive property.

I highly recommend the cooking class. The Kung Pao Chicken was amazing and one of the highlights of our three week china trip for me.

A little far from Chengdu (about an hour or so) this was one of our favorite experiences in China! The museum has a great exhibit about the history of Sichuan cuisine as well as an outdoor garden and homemade chili bean paste. The tour around the museum has some yummy stops along the way as well!

The cooking class was perfect as well! They were able to accommodate our dietary restrictions (no pork or shellfish) and we made 3 authentic dishes, as well as received extra sides that were premade. We also met the head chef! Our guide's English was great and they were excited to have us there.

If you like to cook and consider yourself a foodie, this is a great experience and well worth your time!

Our foodie tour took us to the Museum for a Sichuan cooking class. 1 hour away from the city so it is a drive. Beautiful gardens, they had everything ready for us, even nice chef shirts and hats. We made Kun Pao Chicken and it was nicely shown to us in English and we had a chance to do it ourselves. At the end we had lunch with our creations. Lovely day to spend with them. We ended with a certificate for Rookie chef which was a nice touch. If you have the time you should do it.

I believed I would actually learn to cook some real Chinese dishes, but no, everything is prepared, all you've to do is fry, the certificate at the end felt silly, as I hadn't actually learned to cook anything. It's not the museum's fault, but it's so far out, I couldn't get taxi back to Chengdu despite having been assured at museum taxis were not issue. The resulting public transport back to Chengdu was almost 3hrs. The tour of museum was rushed, I was brought to 9 or 10 items and not given the freedom to actually explore museum. The whole experience was just about 2.5hrs, I had expected maybe 4hrs being a half day tour. Lots of time to explore museum and cook. Just for being so far out, the experience and everything, I just didn't think was with the journey or price. It's the only experience in China I regret having spent so much time on. China is amazing and there it's so much to see and do.

A great experience, once you finally get there. We gave ourselves over an hour to get there, and ended up being nearly half an hour late. For people going by metro/bus and not taxi from Chengdu center, it takes 45mins by metro to Xipilu, and nearly 1hr for the P22 bus - and the P22 stop is metro exit B, OPPOSITE side of the road, and no there aren't any signs when you exit the train station, we were walking around for 10mins before we saw one on the opposite end of the station.

Once we got there, we discovered we were the only ones on the tour that day, so our tour guide had waited for us! To make up the time before the place closed for the day, we had the cooking experience first instead of last, then an abbreviated tour though the museum. The guide was very knowledgeable and made the whole experience great fun. And the food, oh god, the food! Even though we cooked it ourselves it was fantastic, our guide was amazed that we finished it all!
