Puebla Talavera with a wide range of household and art pieces, quiet interior space. With Covid protocols there is no visit of artisan ateliers and no tour of the facility. Wide selection to buy & reasonable prices for hand made, hand painted, classic Talavera. Main door is locked during business hours, so need to ring the buzzer on the left side of the entrance portal to request to enter the store.

We walked in without knowing much. As a student potter myself, I was very curious to learn about the Talavera pottery and process, beyond the Internet.

We were welcomed into a lovely room filled with several finished forms. It was a feast for the eyes. We were interested in buying a few pieces and asked if we could see the workshop( taller) . The lady led us to Miguel, a very learned master artisan at this institution and he led us through a bi-lingual (English, Spanish) tour. Not knowing Spanish well enough was our fault but thanks to translate apps we were able to bridge some of the gaps and see the workshop and artisans at work. It’s an absolutely wonderful place and filled with warm people just like other folks in this amazing city.

With a charming place like Puebla, there are many attractions one could enjoy. To me, this was the absolute best. I shared pictures some of the forms I have made and we exchanged conversations around techniques and spoke technicalities. Such an engaging visit.

Hat-tip: ring the bell to the left while facing the gate(this is a bluish/white building) and if no response just tap the iron gate.
Also , there are other pottery shops in this block selling cazuelas . We bought a few there too :)

During our Mexico travels - we saw beautiful handmade creations in many towns and villages. I am an artist, and love art and handmade things.
While in Puebla we saw talavera everywhere and soon I started to realize that a large portion of what we were seeing was fake. Soon I realized that it was the glaze, the patterns and the weight of things that made me feel this. I must say I am no expert on talavera, but a lot of the talavera pieces have a very slick/super glossy pure white glaze, sound like glass, and are very light, and the design details are not precise - and I knew that these were fake when I saw them. Though most people try and sell then to you saying its real Talavera - it's not. I did some more research later and confirmed that the glaze has to be milky white (as I originally thought) and not bright pure white.
After asking around we found a couple places that sold authentic talavera (certified talavera)- Talavera Armando, talavera la reyna, and talavera uriarte.
And soon after, I did a bit of research and found Talavera de la luz (certified talavera). The entrance to this place was a little deceptive - we were not sure if it was the right place, we had to ring the bell a few times and were about to leave when someone opened the gate. This is located in a residential neighborhood. I am glad, we waited - as this place surely has authentic Talavera, the prices are reflective of this (obviously a little pricey compared to the cheaper fake stuff).
Though we did not buy anything this time (we found some pieces we loved at another place), I sure know where to shop when in Puebla next. I certainly preferred this workshop to the the 3 others mentioned above.

After travelling the world for many years, I had never seen a workshop producing results like the ones I saw at Talavera de la Luz in Puebla. And this is probable because of the heart of its people.

Not only they have the perfect skills and ancient techniques to do Talavera - in fact they are one of the very fiew workshops in Mexico officially certified for doing Talavera the original way - but they also put their whole love, attention and care to each one of the pieces they make.

Your will really burn from inside if you visit this place. Do not forget to have a look at the murals they make and see the garden full of life with remindings of Alhambra. Also ask them to show you a brochure of their collection of ancient maps reproduced in Talavera that they have been working on for the last ten years...an unforgettable experience almost no one in the world knows about yet. Be one of the first ones to see them!

We visited The shop and were able to take a tour of the workshop. They showed every step of the process and some beautiful artistic pieces. The tour lasted 15-20 minutes. In lieu of a tour fee they encouraged us to consider purchasing some items. Everything was beautiful and we are very happy with our purchases.

I went with my guide from the Spanish Institute of Puebla. There were about 8 of us on the tour, which was in Spanish. It was a very complete tour; we were able to go into the rooms where the artisans were, and observe them working. The kilns were not fired up at the time we were there, but we were able to see them, and to see all the work that goes into every single piece of Talavera. I would highly recommend this tour, and the shop, as well. Below I said I would recommend it for kids, but the should go in knowing it's a hands-off place, no touching, just looking, and so on. Not a great place for really small kids, but great for older ones.
I chose YES, it's a "must-see", but (obviously) that would only apply for those who are interested in Talavera....

As other reviewers have noted, this shop/factory is in a very nondescript location. But once you find it and knock on the brown metal door, the employees inside are very gracious and patient while you shop and browse their gift shop.

We received a tour of the factory in Spanish and luckily some in our group (we were three families) were fluent in the language and could translate for those of us not so fluent. Interesting learning the whole process from start to finish.

Only disappointment was being shown a room full of ticketed items for sale, picking out several pieces to purchase, and then being told we couldn't buy them because they were not yet inventoried. We found out later that these items had been removed from stock because they had not sold and were waiting for new, higher prices to be marked on them. Similar pieces were available for sale at nearly double the price of those not currently available for purchase.

One of the few traditional Talavera shops that follows the historic methods of production. This place is much more! It is set in a beautiful location, where murals, water fountains and plants set a great stage to see the many different steps and hands that take to produce a single piece of Talavera. Their store has a great variety of pieces and we found it to be quite affordable. I highly recommend it!

I have visited this factory and store several times and have been very pleased with their products. It is genuine talavera and you can go on the tour to see the entire process. It is entirely hand made from start to finish - from the mixing of the clays by foot to the hand painting of each piece. I would have loved to buy more, but my suitcase was already bursting and to ship is VERY expensive. It goes overnight by DHL. Wish I could figure out how to get an entire dinner service for 8 home to the US. THe people are very friendly and proud of their work., Make sure to ask to see the garden. A beautiful, peaceful place.

We spent a fun and educational morning at the factory/showroom, as our friendly English speaking guide took us through the entire operation. He started by showing us how the clay was mixed, how the pieces were formed, how they were decorated and how they were fired in the huge gas kilns. The operation, which is in its nineteenth year, is amazingly clean and appears to be efficient yet relaxed. We certainly appreciated the time workers took to show us exactly what they did, as well as demonstrate their skill for us. We were also shown several display areas which were downright lovely, especially the center garden area surrounded by a number of astounding ceramic wall panels.
Following the tour we got to browse freely in the huge retail and display areas, which were almost visually overwhelming. The quality of the pieces was extraordinary, which is why Talavera de la Luz is one of only nine operations officially sanctioned by the government to use the Talavera name. To retain their status, all nine producers are inspected and the ceramics they produce tested several times a year to insure that the high quality standards are being met.
Because the quality is so high, Talavera is not inexpensive. However we found that the prices at Talavera de la Luz were reasonable for the quality and lower than much of the Talavera-like pottery for sale throughout the city. We must admit to trying to empty our thin wallets, but we are totally thrilled with the pieces we picked out. In addition every piece we bought was carefully wrapped in several layers of bubble wrap for us meaning that every piece made it back home without breaking. We cannot recommend this operation enough; it was a highlight of our vacation.
(If you visit you must ring the doorbell to the left of the large wooden entrance doors and someone inside will open the door for you.)
